Hello, Friends! And welcome to the month of August! The summer days are quickly slipping away. Some kids are already back in school, and the rest will soon follow. So for the first RRR Challenge this month, the theme is Back to School & Ribbons. I have had this cute collection of Sasparilla papers from October Afternoon in my stash for a while now and decided that the quote from Annie Oakley fit in nicely with the Back to School theme.
I layered my Sasparilla papers, matting everything with grey to tie all the various patterns together. I added a strip of Swiss Dot Metal Gray Ribbon at both the top and the base of my card and a poufy bow tied with Metal Gray Checkerboard Satin Ribbon in the top right corner. I love the texture and shine these ribbons add to the card, and I think the metal gray colors are the perfect pairing for my Annie Oakley quote and the Back to School theme.
I became fascinated with Annie Oakley when I saw the musical “Annie Get Your Gun” in junior high. She was quite a determined woman: born in a log cabin, her father died when she was very young. At the age of 8 she had to learn how to hunt to provide food for the family. She was farmed out to a couple who treated her only slightly better than a slave. When her mother remarried, she was able to return to her family. She continued to hunt and trap, selling the game and furs to local traders and earned enough to pay off her mother’s mortgage at the tender age of 15. She was discovered when she beat a traveling marksman in a shooting competition, and joined the Buffalo Bill Wild West show where she became one of the first female celebrities of her time. I thought you might like to read the quote in full:
Aim at the high mark and you will hit it. No, not the first time, not the second time and maybe not the third. But keep on aiming and keep on shooting for only practice will make you perfect. Finally you’ll hit the bull’s-eye of success.
I just love her spirit!
Thanks for stopping by! Now you dig into your stash of papers and ribbons and link your Back to School themed project up at the Really Reasonable Ribbon BLOG. Remember to aim high! Until next time…
