 Beautiful Life Mixed Media Canvas

Hello, Friends!  I’m so excited about today’s post for Crafty Secrets!  I was browsing the contents of the Typography CD when an idea began to take shape in my mind.  I quickly printed out some of the amazing papers, post cards and banners from that CD and went to work on this Beautiful Life mixed media canvas:

This is a large 11″ x 14″ canvas that I covered with light green burlap.  I used Studio Matte Multi Medium to secure the burlap to the canvas and then used washi tape around the sides and edges.  The postcard is backed with layers of vintage book pages that have been spritzed with water, crumpled and then stained with walnut stain.  Edges have been distressed and inked.  The flowers are made with Tim’s Tattered Flowers die and a combination of cotton fabric, crinoline, burlap, paper and rusty wire.  I’ve added a key, an altered Graphic 45 Butterfly, a piece of old jewelry and bits of “fluff” from distressed jute string. I also used some of the clear art stamps to accent my canvas:Sing for Joy and Artsy Banners.

I’ll share lots of close up photos so you can see the details, but here’s the Typography CD.  It is worth it’s weight in gold!  So many wonderful papers, bits of ephemera, maps, letters, etc.

If you are running low on mojo, this would be a good purchase…the images are so inspiring!

OK…onto the photos of Beautiful Life

I began by applying Ranger Pink Sherbet Paint Dabber directly to areas of the canvas. I was pretty random with this…mixed media is all about having fun!  Next I used some Artist’s Spackle and a chicken wire stencil to add some fun texture around the edges of the canvas.  While this was drying, I worked on the focal image in the center of the canvas.

This post card is one of the printables on the CD. I love the birds, nest and sweet floral wreath.

I printed the Beautiful Life paper as an 8″ x 8″ panel, distressing and layering it with old book pages.  I stamped the bird bath and some music staff images onto the panel.  Stamped the little birdie twice, colored with Distress Markers and a water brush and then popped it onto the side of the bird bath with dimensional foam.   I also stamped, colored and fussy cut the little birds above the postcard.

I heavily distressed and even tore and rolled the edges of this 8×8 section. Can you see the seed beads I added to the torn section?  And, I used my embossing pen to emboss the lettering in gold.  It’s hard to capture in the photo, but so pretty in real life.

The flowers were really fun to make. I just die cut a bunch of different textures, painted them with watered down Ranger Pink Sherbet paint, crunched them up while drying them, then layered them with a button on the top.

Here’s the birdbath and the little birdie…and a sweet bingo card that is also on the CD.  I’m telling you, that CD is amazing!

The banner that runs along the top.  I used both dimensionals and hot glue to secure this to the canvas.  You’ll want to take a closer look at that banner…the images are beautiful.  It is designed to print out on 8 1/2″ x 11″ inch paper. and you could just do that and string it to make a beautiful banner.  But I reduced the size so it would fit here.

See all those yummy layers?  And the gold embossing?

Wow Kathy, your canvas is amazing! The way you added the rolled paper with the book print looks so cool, as well as your flowers, all the birdies, banner and the gold lettering. I adore everything you used off CD 3 which is one of my faves because there are so many bingo cards, postcards, tags, etc to choose from.

I guess I worry most about having everything look like a big mess. I think the key is having color harmony and keeping a flow. You have a lot of layers and images but they all balance beautifully. You nailed it girl – your canvas sings!

Gorgeous canvas!!! So many beautiful details and the flowers are awesome! I love doing mixed media stuff because you never know exactly where it’s going until you get there. I love to make my own inky textures too.
