ButterBee Scraps Altered Metal Embellishments Tutorial

ButterBee Scraps Altered Metal Embellishments Tutorial using Graphic 45 Bloom                        and Eileen Hull HeARTfelt Journal Die

Hello, Friends!  Today I’m honored to be sharing a ButterBee Scraps Altered Metal Embellishments Tutorial with you.  You all know how much I love to use metal embellishments on my projects.  When the lovely and gracious LouAnn Hunt over at ButterBee Scraps invited me to do a guest designer spot focusing on altering and using metal embellishments on a project, how could I say no?  To showcase these lovely metal embellishments, I created an Eileen Hull HeARTfelt Journal made with Graphic 45 Bloom collection.  You’ll find a linked supply list for this project at the end of this post.

Altered Metal Embellishments Tips and Tricks

Sometimes I like to mix metals on a project.  But sometimes, I want the finishes to match.  What to do?   Altering a metal embellishment is easy, fun, and not too messy.  Here’s how I altered these embellishments:

  • First, place an old paper bag, magazine or other disposable surface on your work space.
  • Next, dry brush both sides of each embellishment with a light coat of gesso or paint.  For this project, I used an ivory chalk paint.  But I’ve also had great success with Antique Linen Distress Paint.
  • Now heat dry the paint, or let it air dry for about 15 minutes.
  • Then, tap the raised surfaces with a little Graphic 45 Old Moss Decades Ink.  This really brings out the subtle details in the metals.
  • Finally spray the embellishments with a little mica spray to add a hint of shimmer.  Heat Dry.
    • I used Perfect Pearls Green Patina Mist (retired).  You can actually make your own mica spray by mixing about 1/2 tsp of Perfect Pearls Powder with tap water.  Then place in a mister bottle and you are all set.

The video tutorial below will guide you through all the necessary steps for making this journal.  So I’ll just share a few teaser photos with you here.

TIP: Apply a coat of Distress Collage Medium/Matte to the back of the papers used on the journal covers and signatures.  I find this works the best of all the adhesives I’ve tried for this particular process.  Then burnish well with a bone folder to push out any air pockets.

Using Metal Embellishments Inside the Journal

This journal has 3 signatures (inserts…think chapters in a book.)  I usually die cut my own signatures with Eileen’s die, but while on a foraging trip at Tuesday Morning, I found a few Momenta Explore Journal Inserts on clearance for about $1.  I can’t die cut them that cheaply at home!  So I simply decorated the inserts with pretty papers, metal charms and ribbon.  The tutorial will go into the “how” in more detail.

Graphic 45 Bloom Eileen Hull Journal Die Tutorial by Kathy Clement Kathy by Design Photo 03

Create a unified design by adding the same embellishments inside the journal.  The copper filigree leaves are flat, so they add design without a lot of bulk.

Graphic 45 Bloom Eileen Hull Journal Die Tutorial by Kathy Clement Kathy by Design Photo 04

The same holds true for the butterflies.

TIP: Use a metal adhesive like Glossy Accents, Art Institute Dries Clear Adhesive, or E6000 to secure metal to paper.  You can always add a dab of hot glue to the paper.  This will hold embellishments in place until the slower drying adhesive has a chance to cure.

Here’s another fun way to alter metal embellishments.  I tied this darling key through the loop on the bulldog clip.  Simple, but effective.

This video starts with a short flip through tour of the journal.  Then I’ve added a simple words/photo step out tutorial to guide you through the steps I used to create the altered embellishments, journal cover and inserts.  I hope you enjoy!

Stamperia Alice ATC Tea Box Mini Album Tutorial

Stamperia Alice ATC Tea Box Mini Album Tutorial for Frilly and Funkie Saturday Showcase

Hello, Friends!  As promised, I’m back today with this Stamperia Alice ATC Tea Box Mini Album Tutorial.  It’s being featured on the Frilly & Funkie Challenge Blog Saturday Showcase Feature today, but I thought I would share it here with you as well.

Stamperia Alice Tea Box Mini Album Tutorial by Kathy Clement Kathy by Design for The Funkie Junkie Boutique Photo 01

I’ve already shared a sneak peek of the project with you, and you can review that HERE if you wish.   But why don’t you grab a cuppa and a snack, and we’ll dive into this photo and information heavy post.

Stamperia Alice ATC Tea Box Mini Album Tutorial: ATC Box Details and Tips

Pop a fussy cut teapot up on foam dots, then add a Graphic 45 Die Cut Clock behind it to create a feeling of depth and dimension.  The clock die is a perfect fit for the box.

The base is a Graphic 45 ATC Book Box, which is too cute for words! To create the tag closure, simply follow these easy steps:

  • First, score two of the ATC tags that come in the box 1 1/2″ from the domed edge.  Fold and burnish well.
  • Next, use the Graphic 45 ATC tag die to cut 4 liners for the tags (front and back for each tag).  Adhere these to the tags, then score, fold and burnish a second time.
  • Now center and adhere the tags to the box lid and bottom.  See?  I told you it was easy!

I’ve added a spoon from my collection to decorate the spine.  Glossy Accents works really well for this.  To make the bun feet, follow these simple steps:

  • First, adhere two 1″ wooden bingo chips together.
  • Next, wrap the outside edge with 1/2″ Scor-Tape.
  • Then, cut a  5/8″ strip of designer paper from scraps and wrap it around the Scor-Tape.  Done!

Because you have to fit the ATC Mini Album inside the box, you will have to keep the elements fairly flat so that the lid will close. So I fussy cut and layered a few simple elements from the collection onto the front, then tied the bow.  Easy peasy.

The 2 3/4″ x 3 5/8″ mini album is slightly larger than regulation ATC size, but close enough for me.  You will learn how to custom build it to fit inside the G45 ATC box.

Wrap burlap around the spine. This not only looks great, but it helps to strengthen the integrity of the spine.  Then attach ribbon with 1/2″ Scor-Tape to serve as a closure mechanism.

Stamperia Alice ATC Tea Box Mini Album Tutorial: Interactive Features

The trick to creating a small album with 12×12 papers is making things fit.  To solve this, I scored border pieces like this 12″ strip then accordion folded to  make it fit.

Stamperia Alice Tea Box Mini Album Tutorial by Kathy Clement Kathy by Design for The Funkie Junkie Boutique Photo 10

On the reverse side, I added sentiment tea bag tags that I’ve been saving.

Stamperia Alice Tea Box Mini Album Tutorial by Kathy Clement Kathy by Design for The Funkie Junkie Boutique Photo 11

The album is made up of (3) 2 1/2″ x 3 5/8″ page units.  Each page unit is actually 4 separate pages with flap features or turn pages and a pocket.  I tucked a tea bag into the pocket of each page unit.

Stamperia Alice Tea Box Mini Album Tutorial by Kathy Clement Kathy by Design for The Funkie Junkie Boutique Photo 12

The left hand page is a 2 1/4″ wide strip of designer paper from the collection.  It is nearly three times the height of the page.  In order to use it, I scored it into 3 sections, cut tab corners, added magnets and folded to create a little folio to hold ATC cards.   The page on the right has a fun turn tab feature.

Stamperia Alice Tea Box Mini Album Tutorial by Kathy Clement Kathy by Design for The Funkie Junkie Boutique Photo 13

Belly Bands are a quick and easy way to add interest to an album.  Just score 1/2″ flaps on each side of a scrap piece of paper, then tuck tags from the paper collection behind it.    The right hand page is actually a bookmark that I turned into a fold down page.

Stamperia Alice Tea Box Mini Album Tutorial by Kathy Clement Kathy by Design for The Funkie Junkie Boutique Photo 14

How fun is that?

This flap page lifts to reveal a pocket and teacup.

This fussy cut teapot is scored in half.  Then I glued the right hand half to the page, folded it, and added adhesive to the left hand side.  Close the page, and voila!  It’s perfectly set!

Remember when we all got dressed in our Easter best for Easter Sunday? For me, the outfit was a complete ensemble with little gloves, a matching hat (with an annoying elastic string to keep it firmly on one’s head) white patent leather shoes and an itchy crinoline petticoat.  There is something about this project that takes me right back to those precious memories.

Stamperia Alice ATC Boxed Mini Album

Stamperia Alice ATC Boxed Mini Album for Frilly and Funkie March Madness Challenge

Hello Friends!  Today I have a stinkin’ cute Stamperia Alice ATC Boxed Mini Album to share with you.  I created this adorable project for the latest challenge over on the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog. Our clever Suzz is acting as hostess this go round.  We’ll take a look at the project in a second, but first, let’s see what Suzz has to say about this fabulous challenge.

Challenge Theme:  March Madness
Don’t be afraid, the challenge isn’t going to require you to use basketball inspired images.  Instead I want you to be inspired by Alice in Wonderland.  I started from this quote of a conversation between the Mad Hatter and Alice:  The Mad Hatter asks Alice: “Have I gone Mad?”  and Alice replies “I am afraid so.  You’re entirely bonkers. But I’ll tell you a secret.   All the best people are.”  The challenge is to take any idea or concept from this wonderful tale to inspire your project.  There are so many wonderful bits or pieces to be inspired by like the Queen of Hearts, the mad hatter, the looking glass, tea party or Alice herself.    The possibilities are endless.  Anything can be your inspiration but make sure you reference what inspired your art from the story!

Stamperia Alice ATC Boxed Mini Album : The Inspiration

I grew up reading an Illustrated Classics Hardcover Deluxe Edition of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.  My older brother David gave it to me one Christmas when I was about 8 years old.  I’ve lost count of how many times I read it and pored over the gorgeous full color illustrations and engravings.  My mother had memorized the entire “Jabberwocky” poem and used to recite it to me (along with The Walrus and the Carpenter) as we dried supper dishes together.  So to say that I love this  challenge theme is an understatement.

Stamperia’s “Alice” captures all the whimsy and beauty of my own beloved volume, so I chose to work with their 12×12 collection.  My original idea was to create a Mad Hatter’s Tea Box. Then my imagination began to run wild. I ended up making this ATC sized Mini Album housed in this Graphic 45 ATC Book Box.

This might be the cutest project I have ever made.  The Graphic 45 ATC Box measures just 3 1/2″ x 4 3/4″.   I created a 2 7/8″ x 3 3/4″ ATC Mini Album to fit inside the box.

Because I’m sharing  a tutorial for making the Mini Album Base and page units on Saturday over on the Frilly and Funkie Saturday Showcase, I’m not going to share any details at this time.  I will tell you that this little album is loaded with interactive features and fun surprises, so I hope you’ll join me on Saturday for the big reveal.

Now It’s YOUR Turn!

You are cordially invited to join in on this fun challenge.  To do so, simply create your own vintage or shabby chic Alice-inspired project.   Then link  up on the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog before 11:55PM EST on Tuesday, April 9th.

The winner will earn the chance of a Guest Designer spot  at Frilly and Funkie, and everyone who enters and follows the rules will go into the draw for the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. In addition, the Design Team will select three further outstanding entries and those creators will receive a Top Pick badge to display on their blogs!

I’m looking forward to sharing all the details and the tutorial with you on Saturday!

Thanks for stopping by!
