Heartfelt Creations Young at Heart Birthday Card for the January Alumni Hop

Hello, Friends!  It’s time for the Heartfelt Creations January Alumni Hop.  All this cold, dreary winter weather had me in the mood to create a bright and cheery card.  That’s how I decided to make this Heartfelt Creations Young at Heart Birthday Card.

See?  I told you it was bright and cheery!  This is a 5.25″ x 725″ top fold card with a 1/4″ spine.  Here are the Heartfelt Creations Supplies I used to make this card:

How to Make A Heartfelt Creations Young at Heart Birthday Card
  • First, create your card base from sturdy ivory cardstock.
  • Next, cut a 5″ x 7″ layer of the vintage map paper and mat on bright yellow cardstock.  Then mat a second time on gold cardstock.  I like to have a 1/8″ margin on my mats, but that is just my personal choice.
  • Now, cut TWO 4″ x 6″ panels of designer paper,  I used the Journey word collage and the grassy meadow papers for these two layers.  As before, mat both layers.
  • Then, die cut the eyelet oval from white cardstock.

  • Next, use the Young at Heart Die to cut out the cute airplane.  I don’t have the die to cut out the Happy Birthday banner, so I fussy cut that.  Back both the banner and the airplane with foam adhesive or waste chipboard to add dimension.
  • Now, fussy cut the sentiment from designer paper and mat on cardstock.

  • Then fussy cut “Come Fly With Me” from the airplane journal card.  Bevel the corners to make it look like a tag.  Mat with cardstock, leaving a little extra edge on the bottom for gluing.  Glue this behind the grassy meadow panel.
  • Finally, Glue all the layers in place, staggering them as you see here.  Some will go off the edge of the card.  That is fine.  Now we are ready to make some flowers!

Heartfelt Creations Young at Heart Birthday Card: Making the Flowers

Here’s how I made the flowers for this card:

  • First, stamp 2 sets of Botanical Rose on yellow cardstock using Worn Lipstick Distress Ink.  Heat emboss with clear embossing powder
  • Now stamp several sets of Botanical Rose leaves on green patterned paper from the collection using Ranger Archival Olive Green Ink.  Heat emboss with clear embossing powder.
  • Next, Die cut the flower layers and the leaves with the Botanical Rose Die.
  • Use the Deluxe Flower Shaping Kit to form each flower layer.  Spritz the paper lightly with water first so that the petals will hold their shape.  I also pinched the petal ends together to give them a more natural, dimensional look.
  • Paint each flower layer with a very light coat of Picket Fence Distress Paint.  Immediately cover each petal layer with super fine clear glitter while the paint is still wet.
  • Next, stack the petal layers together to form flowers.  I use a hot glue gun to secure my petal layers.
  • Then spray each flower with Lemon Zest and Gold Tattered Angels Mist.  I also spattered my flowers with Tattered Angels Coffee Shop Mist.
  • Now set the petal layers aside to dry.
  • When the flower layers are dry, fill the centers with hot glue and Express-O Yourself Prills.
  • Finally, add the finished flowers and leaves to the card, arranging as you like.

As a finishing touch, I created a loopy bow with natural burlap string and added it under the flower layers.  I also glued 3 tiny black buttons to the sentiment panel.

Heartfelt Creations Young at Heart Birthday Card: A Peek Inside

  • First, I lined both the top and bottom panels of the card interior with designer paper.
  • Next, I trimmed down a 6″ x 6″ card topper, punched a thumb hole on the right hand side, and turned it into a pocket.  This is so easy!  Just glue the top, bottom and left hand side to the card base, and you have an instant pocket!
  • Then I created a box style pocket on the bottom half of the card.

Create a little tea bag wallet with scraps on your table.

Tuck the teabag into a pocket and decorate with a border strip.  You even have room to write a nice personal note here.

What’s inside?  A sweet tasseled bookmark, a decorated honey stick to go with the tea bag, and a little chocolate treat.  Now this card is also a birthday present!  How fun is that?
