I Have Heard the Mermaids Singing

Mermaid Tag 02Crafty Secrets I Have Heard the Mermaids Singing Tag

Hello, Friends!  Seems like all I can think about lately is the beach.  My heart is longing for a wind swept beach: sand between my toes, long walks, searching for hidden treasures.  But, alas, the schedule is full, and the beach must wait.  So I’ve been satisfying my longing by creating beach themed art.  The other day, I pulled out my Crafty Secrets Creating With Vintage Illustrations CD  where I found this beautiful printed scene of children playing at the shore.  That inspired me to dig into my digital art stamps where I found these two lovely Mermaids just begging to be invited to the party!  So I created this jumbo tag, hand wrote a few lines from the T. S. Eliot poem and titled it, “I Have Heard the Mermaids Singing.”

Mermaid Tag 01This was fun to create.  I wanted to incorporate the mermaids into the scene, almost as though they were part of the original.  I sized them in PaintShop Pro, then printed them out on watercolor paper.  They were colored with Aquarelle Watercolor pencils and detail brush, then fussy cut.  I used my craft knife to cut along the outline of the rocks so that I could slip them behind , then adhered them with foam dots so that they would pop up from the scene.  I was pleased with how well this worked.  As you can see, in the original image, they are leaning or sitting on stairs:

I added some shells and fibers, vintage sheet music and embossed the rocks with Stampendous shabby white embossing powder.

Mermaid Tag 03Every mermaid needs a pearl tiara, don’t you agree?

Mermaid Tag 02Diamond Stickles were added to the tails and Frosted Lace Stickles to the hair.  The title was simply printed out on watercolor paper and inked with Peeled Paint Distress Ink.  I used Salty Ocean Distress Ink around the edges of the tag. I used my father’s vintage fountain pen to write the sentiment.

Mermaid Tag 04It’s not quite as good as a walk along the beach, but it will have to do until I can steal away and get lost in the wonders of the shore.

Thanks for stopping by….may you hear the mermaids singing today, wherever you are.

Cheerio,

kathy

I love the way you tucked the mermaids into your scene! You are such a clever girl, sweet Kathy! It takes a lot of talent and creativity to see other ways to use stamps and images. I love your artist eye! The tag is just lovely. Love the pearl headband! So Sweet!

How creative! I don’t know why I don’t make tags but you’ve sure inspired me to ‘get busy’! Thanks my friend and hopefully you’ll find time in your schedule before too long to go take that relaxing walk on the beach. Sounds pretty good to me too but I know it’s NOT happening this year … guess I’ll have to go get one of those kiddie pools and a bag of play sand at Home Depot! LOL
