Life: Enjoy the Journey Mixed Media Layout for Heartfelt Creations Wednesday

The Debut of Celebrate the Journey

Welcome to Heartfelt Creations Wednesday, Friends!  Today I have an exciting mixed media layout featuring papers, dies, and stamps from the newest member of Heartfelt Creations: Celebrate the Journey.  Here are the official release notes for this fantastic new collection:

Heartfelt Creations invites you to  “Celebrate the Journey” with this classic travel-themed collection .  Whether you are traveling around the world or around the block, you will find papers, stamps and dies to document your life’s adventures.  The coordinating stamps and papers feature maps, compass roses, bicycles, hot air balloons, vintage suitcases, boarding passes and postcards. The clever Luggage and Tag die even creates a delightful 3-D suitcase! Soft hues of light green, deep teal, pink and rose merge with subtle, neutral backgrounds that are richly layered with beautiful fonts, flourishes and focal images.  “Celebrate the Journey” is just the ticket for both masculine and feminine projects, the perfect traveling companion for all of life’s journeys great and small. Leave a comment on the Heartfelt Creations blog for a chance to win this outstanding collection.

I wanted to create a project to showcase the adventurous vibe of this assortment of papers, stamps and dies, and what is more adventurous than mixed media?  Here’s the 12×12 layout I created for the Celebrate the Journey debut:

I know, I know…there’s a lot to take in, so we’ll look at it section by section.

I started by stamping the floral dress collage stamp in white ink onto this rosy background paper from the collection.  It was heat embossed with white superfine ink and colored in with Distress Markers.  I wanted it to be the focal image of the page, so I surrounded it with Raindrops on Roses die cuts made with black glitter cardstock.  Tags, tickets and tabs were cut from the collection with the very useful and versatile Luggage and Tags die.  It has the cutest vintage suitcase die!

I die cut it from faux leather and embellished it with tickets and tags from the collage page.  I deliberately made it look like an old timey carpetbag or valise instead of a suitcase.

I added lacy borders, fishtail banners, gigantic copper brads, lots of distressing, ink splatters, paint splatters, hot air balloons…all kinds of imagery to give the piece a feeling of celebration…because that is what this journey called life is all about…celebrating every single day as a gift that we get to open and enjoy!

I treated the hot air balloon with UTEE and then cracked the finish to give it a really cool old look.

Directions:  Stamp the Floral Dress Collage image onto a piece of pink patterned paper from the collection using ColorBox Frost White Ink.  Heat Emboss with White Superfine Embossing Powder.  Use a ruler to tear around the edges of the image.  Distress the edges lightly and ink with Walnut Stain.  Color the dress in with Picked Raspberries and Victorian Velvet Distress Markers and a water brush. Color eh flowers in with Evergreen Bough and the boots with Black Soot.  Color the center of the sentiment with Brushed Corduroy.  Add yellow Stickles to flower centers.  Use Glossy Accents on the boots.  Spread a light coating of Diamond Stickles on the dress.  Set aside to dry.
Use the collaged scrapbook page with the banner flags on the left as your base page for this layout.  Ink the edges with Picked Raspberry Distress Stain and distress the edges.  Use Picked Raspberry Distress Stain to create random ink blotches on the page.  Soften the color with Picket Fence Distress Stain.
Cut 2 of the Decorative Lace Border Die from pink patterned paper from the collection.  Use the cut die as a stencil and apply Antique Linen Distress Paint randomly on the base page.  Turn the painted die over and use the reverse side to add more painted areas to the base page.  Ink the front side of the die with Picked Raspberry Distress Stain and Picket Fence Distress Stain.  Add to the layout so that the bottom edge is 1 ¾” from the base of the page.
Using the same pink patterned paper you stamped on, cut eight 3” x 1 ½” banner flags, tapering the sides.  Use the teal word collage page to cut 3 banner flags to the same dimension.  Ink the edges with Picked Raspberry Distress Stain.  Staple together in groups of 3, as shown.  Cut 30” of each color of RRR jute string and twist together, doubling over to form the banner string.  Use copper brads to secure to the top right and left hand corners of the base page.  Use tacky glue to add the banners beneath the twisted twine.  Use hot glue to add 4 resin roses in the center of each bundle.
Die cut 2 sets of the Raindrops on Roses die from black glitter cardstock.  Frame the stamped image with them, securing to the layout with Zip Dry Glue.  Use the tag die to cut the postcard image from the collage sheet, tear it in half, add a copper brad and copper ribbon to one end and tuck under the stamped panel, as shown.  Cut tickets from the collage sheet using the ticket die and add to the page. Cut the hot air balloon from that page, cover with Versamark and emboss with UTEE.  While still slightly warm, shape the balloon and secure to the page with foam dots.  Cut the word LIFE from that page and use a black marker to doodle in the letters.  Ink the edges with Picked Raspberry Distress Stain and mount on glitter cardstock.  Cover only the letters with Glossy Accents and set aside to dry.
Die cut the suitcase from the faux leather cardstock and shape.  Use copper brads to secure the latches and tie twine around the handle.  Add images from the collage page to decorate the front of the valise. Add all the accent pieces as shown.  Secure sequins with Zip Dry glue.

Kathy…this vintage layout is darling. I so love the bunting across the top with the little fishtail banners. So colorful and sweet! I also really love your lacy little black edgings. Those really pop behind your dress collage stamp. That black edging definitely pops that and did as you were wanting to do…making it the focal point. Love everything about your layout! <3 Candy
