Frilly and Funkie Challenge: Mixed Media Honeybee All Occasion Shaker Card

Hello, Friends!  It’s time for a brand new challenge over on the Frilly and Funkie Blog.  This Mixed Media Honeybee All Occasion Shaker Card is loaded with texture, dimension and some really fun features.  I’ll share it with you in just a second, but first, let’s find out Sara, our hostess for the challenge, has to say about the theme:

Neutral Point of View
We’re seeing a lot of pastel and brighter colors this time of year. For this challenge we’re inviting you to step away from all that color and play with your neutral art supplies. You can add a few pops or hints of color, but be sure we see mainly neutrals on your vintage or shabby chic design. (Think black, white, gray, brown, beige, cream, ivory; even gold and silver.)

Ooooh!  Look at all this delicious texture!  To help me embrace the challenge to use neutral tones, I turned to a lovely pad of paper created by a company I discovered (and fell in love with) while at CHA in January.  My friends, meet “Alchemy” by Stamperia, a company based in Italy.  These lovely papers have a definite “Old World” feel, and I sure do love to play with them

Instead of matting all my paper layers, as I usually do, this time I distressed all the edges, then dry brushed them with Antique Linen Distress Paint.  While I was dry brushing, I went ahead and dabbed paint onto the flowers and other paper layers, too.  I love the way this aged the papers and gave the whole piece a very worn, antique feel.

These Little Birdie Flowers take on a whole new look once they are brushed with paint.  I added a little bee charm to the petals, along with burlap string and a random leaf I found on my desk.

The Tim Holtz Weathered Clock Die frames the focal.  I treated it randomly with Seth Apter’s Ancient Amber Baked Texture Embossing Powder to add hints of gold to the finish.  The weathered clock is topped with some steampunk charms and a little resin crown, just above the flower cluster.

Mixed Media Honeybee All Occasion Shaker Card: Sweet as Honey inside!

I simply cannot get over the Old World charm and beauty of this paper collection.  Decorating the inside of this card was every bit as much fun as creating the outside.  I created a spot on the top half of the card where a personal greeting can be written in.  By leaving this blank, I can customize the greeting for any occasion I need.

To fill the pocket on the bottom half of the card, I matted one of the pre-made bookmarks from the Alchemy Collection on cream and kraft cardstock.  Then I created a little tea bag wallet from scraps on my table.  And you cannot present a tea bag wallet without a honey stick.  It just wouldn’t be kosher.

This card came together so quickly…in just a couple of hours.  I had such fun cutting into these gorgeous papers and watching the design take shape.  It’s always an adventure, my friends!
