Authentique Nightfall Halloween Banner for Really Reasonable Ribbon

Hello, Friends!  Today I have a spooktacular Authentique Nightfall Halloween Banner made with Really Reasonable Ribbon to share with you.  I’ve combined ribbons from the September Ribbon Club with other Boo-tiful Halloween Ribbons from RRR.  Banners are loads of fun to make, add a festive feel to any holiday and can be used from year to year.  This makes the time investment well worthwhile.  There is no tutorial for this project, but I will share lots of tips and tricks that will help you make your own version.

Halloween Banner Basics

  • Begin by cutting the individual pennants for your banner.  Sometimes I use a die for this process, but this time I hand cut the pennants..
  • First, create a template from a piece of  4 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ medium weight chipboard.
  • Find the mid-point on the bottom edge of the chipboard.  For these pennants, that was 2 1/4″.  Make a small pencil mark here.
  • Now measure up 1 1/2″ from the midpoint and  make another small mark.
  • Use your ruler and a pencil to draw a line from each corner to this mark.  Then trim out to form the pennant shape.
  • Now you can trace this template onto your designer paper.
  • Add 2 ATC banner tags on each end of the banner as accents.  These hang upside down.  Use the ATC die to cut covers for each of these pennants.
Stitching the Halloween Banner

Stitch the pennants to a long piece of ribbon.  I used 1 1/2″ Black Silky Crush Ribbon.

  • First, space the pennants and ATC tags out on your work surface.
  • Cut the ribbon so that you have about a 4″ overhang on each side of the pennants.
  • Secure the banners to the ribbon with binder clips, paper clips or clothespins.
  • The pennants lie on TOP of the ribbon.
  • Add a row of orange ric rac across the top of the pennants.
  • When everything is situated the way you like it, stitch all the way across the top of the banner, removing the binder clips as you stitch..
  • Then stitch all the way across the bottom edge of the ribbon.
  • Tie ribbon between the pennants.  Leave the ribbon long and just tie a square knot.
  • Top each knot with a burlap string bow and a button.
Ribbon and Flower Clusters

Tie  Halloween Gingham bows for the corners on each end of the ribbon.

Create a bow cluster with die cut skeleton leaves and flowers.

Creating Layers

Each pennant in the banner follows the same “recipe.”

  • The first layer is a dark pennant with a small, not too busy print.
  • Then cut a 4″ x 4″ square of patterned paper.
  • Top this layer with a die cut doily.
  • Next, mat a 3″ x 4″ image on black cardstock. Back with foam or waste chipboard to create more depth and dimension.
  • The center pennant is dressed up with clusters of die cut leaves, a die cut clock and a framed sticker image.  But you still have the basic layers mentioned above.

Do you like to decorate with banners?  I’d love to hear how you use them in the comment section below.

Memorial Day Patriotic Banner and a Winner!

Authentique Liberty Patriotic Banner for Summer by Kathy Clement Kathy by Design

Memorial Day Patriotic Banner: Memories from the Past

Hello, Friends!  Today is Memorial Day:  a time to remember and honor all those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.  It’s a somber day, but a joyous one as well, as we celebrate the freedom that sacrifice provided to us as Americans.  Now, more than ever, it’s good to remember the price that was paid for our freedom.  It is a thing to be cherished, guarded and appreciated every day of the year.  Coming from a family where my brothers and dad served our country, I am thankful.

Growing up in Vermont, Memorial Day meant rising early to pick lilacs.  The fragrant blooms were still heavy with dew as we gently laid them in a laundry basket to carry home.  Then the work of arranging them in big fan-shaped metal urns began.  Once that task was finished, we drove over to the family cemetery plot where we placed them on the graves of family members who had served.  We always brought along a bucket, soap and a scrub brush along with gardening tools so we could clean up the graves.  It sounds morbid, but I loved this tradition. It was heavenly to breathe in the scent of those glorious lilacs as we worked in the warmth of the sun under the bright blue sky.

After that, we would travel to the main street in our small town to observe the Memorial Day Parade.  Cars filled with Gold Star Mothers, a few marching bands, civic groups and Shriners filled the street for about 30 minutes.  Then we all traveled up to the Warm Memorial in the park where a prayer of gratitude was offered by local clergy.  As a wreath was placed on the memorial, someone always played “Taps” on the trumpet.  The haunting notes of that melody always left me with goosebumps and a tear in my eye.  How I miss those wonderful traditions!

Memorial Day Patriotic Banner: Tips and Tricks

Banners are one of my absolute favorite things to make.  I just wish they weren’t so hard to photograph!  But I think you can easily see that this red, white and blue beauty  made with Authentique Paper’s Liberty Collection is filled with lots of fun details.  While I don’t have a tutorial, I will share some tips and tricks with you.

  • Begin by cutting the banner pieces from red ticking canvas.  Use the Eileen Hull House Die for this step.  Lay the die on the fabric and cut around it with scissors.  Use the large die for the outer pennant, then trace around the inside of that die for the natural canvas.
  • Next, cut red glitter paper using the smaller die from the set.  To create the perforated edge, trim half the die cut holes using a pair of scissors.
  • Create smaller pennants with Graphic 45 ATC tags.  Cut covers for the tags with the G45 ATC Die.
  • Rosettes are a must on a patriotic banner.  Cut designer paper with the Tim Holtz Sizzix Rosette Die.  Top with buttons.
Memorial Day Patriotic Banner: Finishing Touches

  • Cut a 2 yard section of 1 1/2″ wide Royal Blue Plaid Ribbon.
  • Arrange the pennants along the ribbon.  Hold them in place with binder clips.
  • Now stitch the pieces onto the ribbon.  I added a border of White Ruffled Ribbon stitched with Red Zig Zag Ribbon in the center.
  • Next, tie bows between the pennants with Scarlet Checkerboard Satin Ribbon.
  • Then add images and flowers to finish the banner.

How do you celebrate Memorial Day?  I know this is not a typical year, but if it was, what would you be doing?  A trip to the beach?  Family picnic?  Back yard barbecue?  I’d love to hear your memories of Memorial Day past, and how you intend to honor the day this year.

Authentique Gracious Tea Themed Banner

Authentique Gracious Tea Themed Banner

Hello, Friends!  Happy Friday!  Let’s kick off the weekend with a shabby chic little Gracious tea themed banner for all my fellow tea drinkers!  Imagining and designing this shabby chic beauty was so much fun!

Once again, I’ve paired some of my favorite Eileen Hull Dies up with beautiful Authentique papers and textiles to make this warm and cozy bit of eye candy.

Gracious Tea Themed Banner: Creating the Pennant Base

Each pennant in the tea themed banner has 3 layers: a burlap paper backing, a large designer paper layer and a smaller designer paper layer.

Cut the pennants for this banner with Eileen’s Sizzix House Stitchlets Die.  Use just the largest frame die to cut the first layer.  Then use both the frame and the insert die to cut the second layer.  Trim the perforated edge from the second layer.  Line it up on your cutting tool so that you only cut away half the die cut circle.  Then you have a lovely edge detail.  Next, place a bit of Scor-Tape on the back of the larger pennant, right in the center.  Lay this over some burlap and cut out the third layer by hand.  This is not as tricky as it sounds.  Just take your time and trim about 1/4″ larger than the paper layer. Stack the 3 layers together and stitch them on your sewing machine.  If you don’t sew, then just glue them all together.

TIP:  Use Scor-Tape or a small dab of adhesive on the back of each layer to hold things in place while sewing.  This makes the job so much easier.

When you have stitched all the pennant layers together, use binder clips or pins to secure them to a 1 yard length of Antique Gold Silky Crush Ribbon.  Leave about 2″  between each pennant.  Then stitch the pennants to the ribbon.  Tie a bit of ribbon between each pennant.  Add triple loop bows and gold metallic string bows on each end.

Gracious Tea Themed Banner:  The Teacups

I have found so many ways to use Eileen’s teacup die.  I wish Sizzix would release this die again, as I know many of you would like to add it to your stash.  Die cut each teacup twice: once from mat board or heavy chipboard and again from designer paper.  Adhere the designer paper to the mat board.  Easy peasy!

TIP:  Cut the paper for the tea cups to measure 4 1/2″ x 3 1/4″.  You want to place the paper on the die face down.  For the tea tag, paper measures 1 1/2″ X 2″.  Cut this twice as well: once from chipboard, once from designer paper.

Gracious Tea Themed Banner:  The Details

Now comes the fun part: assembling the banner.  Add flowers, lace, little charms and elements from the cardstock die cut sheet to make your project really special.  Die cut doilies folded in half really make the tea cups pop on the banner.  Little metal spoons, vintage buttons, fall fruits and other sweet details add that shabby chic charm we all love so much.

I just think this banner would be so sweet hanging in a kitchen.  Since I am a tea drinker, I have a buffet table in my kitchen where I store all my teas and such.  I’ve been wanting to make a banner to hang here for the longest time.  This one is in my Etsy shop, if you’d like to hang it in your kitchen.

I hope I’ve shared some tips, tricks and ideas that you can use in your next crafty adventure.  If so, I’d love to hear from you in the comment section below.  You’ll also find a linked supply list at the bottom of this post.

Authentique Twilight Trick or Treat Banner Tutorial

Authentique Twilight Trick or Treat Banner Tutorial with Eileen Hull Gift Card  & Tag #2 Die

Hello, Friends!  Today, I’m sharing a Frightfully Fabulous Authentique Twilight Trick or Treat Banner Tutorial.  We’ll be working with Eileen Hull’s new Gift Card Folder & Tag #2 Die as well as the House/Pocket Stitchlets Die.

Is there anything more festive than a holiday banner?  I don’t think so!  The Twilight Collection from Authentique is done all in shades of classic orange, black and cream.  The vintage images are a great mix of sweet and slightly spooky.  I just had to use it to make a little Halloween Home Decor.

Authentique Twilight Trick or Treat Banner Tutorial: Making the Large Pennants

The banner measures a little over 4 feet in length.  Here are the steps I followed to make this Boo-tiful banner.

  • First, die cut 3 large pennants with the Eileen Hull House/Pocket Stitchlets Die.  Use the large outer frame and cut the shapes from black cardstock.
  • Next, cut 3 pennants from designer paper.  To do this, place the insert die inside the frame.  Die cut from the 12″ x 12″ Collection Kit so that the patterns match the scale of the project.
  • Now, place the patterned paper pennants on your cutting tool.  Line the stitching holes up so that they are half way on the cutting edge.  Then cut around the perimeter.  This leaves you with a really cool shaped edge on each pennant.
  • Adhere each patterned pennant on orange cardstock.  Then trim out using your paper cutter.
  • Finally, stitch the 3 layers together on the sewing machine.  Or, if you don’t stitch, simply glue them together.

Authentique Twilight Trick or Treat Banner Tutorial: Making the Small Pennants

The banner has 4 small pennants.  These are made with Graphic 45 ATC Tags, turned upside down so that the grommet is on the bottom.  Cut the paper liner using the ATC die. For these pennants, work with the 8″ x 8″ Twilight Pad so that the scale of the pattern matches the size of the pennant. Then adhere the liner to the tag.  Easy peasy!

Authentique Twilight Trick or Treat Banner Tutoria: Putting it all together

I like to machine stitch my banners to ribbon.  First, stitch along the top edge.  Use bulldog clips or pins to hold everything in place.  If you are adding ric-rack, as I did, go ahead and stitch this on at the same time.  But if you don’t stitch, you can simply attach each pennant with a clothespin or a bulldog clip.  That is perfectly fine.

TIP: Once you have stitched along the top edge, turn the banner and stitch a second time along the bottom edge of the ribbon.  This only takes a second, but it ensures that the banner will lie flat when displayed.

Authentique Twilight Trick or Treat Banner Tutorial: Making the Rosettes

You can die cut rosettes, or make your own.  There are loads of tutorials on YouTube showing you how to make your own rosettes without using a die.   String some spooky metal embellishments through the grommet hole of each tag.  If you use jewelry wire, this is easily done.

TIP:  If you die cut your rosettes, be sure to run a strip of washi tape over the back side before you fold.  This keeps the perforated lines from separating.

Authentique Twilight Trick or Treat Banner Tutorial: Making the Treat Box

Each of the large pennants is decorated with a little treat box/book insert.

The box is a dimensional envelope, cut with Eileen Hull’s new Sizzix die.  Then I  used the gift card holder die to make a little book to tuck inside each envelope.

The book opens to reveal a little treat pocket and a mini sentiment card.

Paint wood clothespins black, then cover the front with a bit of ribbon, a burlap string bow and small posy.  Use the clothespins to hold the treat boxes in place on the banner.

I’ve prepared an easy to follow video tutorial showing you how to make the treat box and the book insert.  I hope you enjoy!

Authentique Liberty Patriotic Banner

Authentique Liberty Patriotic Banner

Hello, Friends!  Are you ready for the 4th of July?  It’s one of my favorite holidays.  To help you celebrate, I’ve prepared this Authentique Liberty Patriotic Banner as my contribution to the Authentique Design Team 4th of July celebration week.  (You can check out the other inspirational projects HERE.)

The large pennants in this banner all measure 5″ x 7″ and have been hand cut.  It’s really not as hard as you might think to create your own banner pennants.

  • First, cut two  5″ x 7″ panels of Authentique Spectrum Old Glory Cardstock and an additional 2 from Tricycle Red.
  • Next, bring the bottom corners of the rectangle together, but don’t fold completely.
  • Now, measure up about 1″ on the fold.
  • Next,  place on your cutting tool make a diagonal cut from the 1″ mark along the fold to the outside corner of the rectangle.  When you open this, you will have a “v” shaped pennant.
  • Use this as a template for cutting the remaining 3 banners.
  • For the second layer, cut the papers to 4 3/4″ x 6 1/2″ and repeat the above process.
Authentique Liberty Patriotic Banner: Creating Layers

Once you have cut all your pennant pieces from the Spectrum Cardstock, you can stitch the layers together, as I did here, or simply use your favorite adhesive.

Now make the small pennants by covering Graphic 45 ATC tags with patterned paper.  (Use the ATC Die).  Then place these shaped edge down between the larger pennants.

Authentique Liberty Patriotic Banner: More Tips and Tricks

Now,  stitch the pennants to a long piece of ribbon.

TIP:  Hold pennants in place with binder clips.

TIP:  To ensure that the pennants lie flat when hanging, stitch all the way across the top of the ribbon. Then stitch a second time along the bottom edge of the ribbon.  This really works, friends!

Now tie square knot bows between all the pennants.

Die cut Glory Blue and Patterned papers using a shape that you like.  This will be the next layer on your pennants.

Next, cut 4 3/4″ x 2 1/2″ panels of patterned paper from your stash.  These will be belly bands on your banners.  Fold white doilies in half and layer underneath your focal image.  Use a die to create some festive rosettes and layer these on with some patriotic buttons and charms.  Now all you need to do is add flowers and some poufy bows in the corners and your banner is ready to hang!

I’ll be back on Wednesday with more Authentique 4th of July inspiration!

I hope I’ve shared some tips and tricks that you can use the next time you want to make a banner.  If so, I’d love to hear from you in the comment section below.
