G45 Communique Faux Embossed Leather Mini Album Tutorial

G45 Communique Faux Embossed Leather Mini Album Tutorial for The Funkie Junkie Boutique

Hello, Friends!  Welcome to the latest challenge at The Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog.  I’ve created this vintage style G45 Communique Faux Embossed Leather Mini Album Tutorial for the Just My Type Challenge.  We’ll take a close look at it in a moment, bur first let’s see what our hostess, the marvelous Jenny Marples has to say about this fun challenge.

Challenge Theme: Just My Type
“As a trained touch typist I love vintage typewriters. I love the way they look and sound and the font they create. For this challenge create a vintage or shabby chic project and include a typewriter, typewriter keys, typeface.”

This  7 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ x 2 3/4″  is “made from scratch”  using 12″ x 18″ black cardstock from envelopes.com.   I had so much fun creating this faux embossed leather look using my Tim Holtz/Sizzix Botanical 3-D Texture Fade, Seth Apter Ancient Amber Baked Texture and various Distress Paints.  (Find links to the products I used below.)

This shot gives you a good idea of the amazing texture that you get when you use these amazing 3D folders.  My mixed media cover was inspired by the marvelous Jenny Marples who showed how to create rusty metal in THIS POST.  I thought that I could use a similar process to create the look of faux leather.   (If you don’t have these 3D texture fades, you can create a similar look using a process I shared HERE and in another tutorial HERE. )

G45 Communique Faux Embossed Leather Mini Album Tutorial: Picture Tour

I’m not going to go into a lot of detail here, as I’ve prepared a video tour of the project where I share lots of tips and techniques.  So we’ll just look at the still photos.

One quick note: in addition to the product links below, I also used Little Birdie Crafts Sangria Roslind Roses and 1.5″ Black Plaid Ribbon.  Some of my papers are from the original G45 Communique release way back when.  The majority are from the newer DCE release.

Black seam binding ribbon makes me think of the old carbon typewriter ribbons.

I’m becoming very fond of using stamps against a Distress Stain Background.  This Tim Holtz Inventor 1 stamp is perfect for this challenge.

I adore G45 policy envelopes.  Decorate quickly by adding chipboard and paper scraps to create the perfect spot to tuck in photos or other memorabilia.

This fussy cut image is colored with Distress Crayon.  I used Tim’s Typography Stamps and white pigment ink to add even more type elements to the design.

Y’all know how much I love interactive elements, so I’ve loaded this mini up with flaps, pockets, tags, inserts and waterfalls.

Masculine Belated Birthday Card with Graphic 45

Please note:  This is my second post for today.  If you are looking for the Really Reasonable Ribbon Challenge, please scroll down or click HERE.

Masculine Belated Birthday Card with Graphic 45 Communique

Hello Friends!  Don’t you just hate it when you are late for a birthday?  It’s always hard to come up with a good excuse!  When we were in the middle of our move, I missed a birthday for a special friend of the family. To make up for being tardy, I created a special masculine belated birthday card using Graphic 45’s Communique collection.

Masculine Belated Birthday Card Communique by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 1There’s kind of a neat story behind this card.  My friend, Steve was born at the same time as my older brother Dennis.  In fact, his mom and my mom crossed paths while giving birth in the small Vermont hospital.  They remained fast friends all the rest of their lives.  Steve worked as an administrative assistant for the state for many years.  Like me, he learned  to type on an old manual typewriter.  So, these funky vintage typewriter images are just right  for the card.

Tips for designing masculine cards

Masculine cards can be challenging to design.  One tip is to stick with a strong color palette like red, black and cream.   I chose the diamond patterned paper in the background because it reminds me  of a man’s tie.  What could be better for this masculine belated birthday card?

Masculine Belated Birthday Card Communique by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 3I fussy cut this vintage typewriter and popped it up on foam adhesive to make it stand out.  A few gold sequins and that cute banner flag suspended from a paper clip make great embellishments. I tend to keep my masculine card designs a little “stripped down” with fewer embellishments and very simple bows.  The twine bow through the “vintage” chipboard is just right.

Masculine Belated Birthday Card Communique by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo4I decorated the inside of this masculine belated birthday card with more fun images from the collection.  The sentiment was  hand stamped onto kraft cardstock.  I left myself plenty of room to write a personal note to Steve…and to explain my tardy birthday wishes!

Masculine Belated Birthday Card Communique by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 5I was tickled to find this male typist in the collection.  What could be more perfect?  The little cut out diamonds  came from the spaces between the tiles.  I thought they looked like cuff links, and had to add them in.

Steve received his card and loved it.  I know a lot of people think of Communique as a feminine collection, and it does make beautiful feminine cards.  But as you can see, it makes a great masculine belated birthday card, too!

Thanks for stopping by!  Now go get your craft on!

kathy
