Graphic 45 Portrait of a Lady Generations Layout

Petaloo/Creative Embellishments Blog Hop: Graphic 45 Portrait of a Lady Generations Layout

Hello, Friends!  Are you ready to hop?  I’m participating in the Petaloo International/Creative Embellishments Blog Hop that is going on from April 1st-April 11th.  Be sure to pop over to the Petaloo  and Creative Embellishments Blogs and leave a comment during these dates, as there are some wonderful prize packages available,My contribution to the party is this Graphic 45 Portrait of a Lady “Generations” Layout.

I used the Portrait of a Lady 12×12 Patterns and Solids paper along with some scraps, an ephemera card and a whole garden full of beautiful Petaloo flowers to make this layout.  As you can see from the photo, I  was in the mood to get messy. You’ll find lots of distressed edges, paint spatters, dry brushing and embossing in this mixed media layout.

Chips:  They’re addictive!

Just like potato chips, I find that chipboard elements are positively addictive!  For this layout, I decided to use the “generations” title from the Heritage Words Set and a Curly Flourish.  Chips are a great way to add texture, dimension and layers to any project!

To prepare my chips for the layout, I followed these steps:

  1. Paint the surface with Tattered Rose Distress Ink.  Dry
  2. Add fairly thick blobs of Picket Fence Distress Crackle Paint on top.  Let this dry naturally, or your paint won’t crackle well.
  3. Tap the chipboard with Versamark Embossing ink and sprinkle with Stampendous Shabby Pink Embossing Enamel.
  4. Heat set.

It’s really just that simple! Here’s a close-up of the “generations” title.

I also painted a little Prima garden sink with Tattered Rose Distress ink.  Don’t these Pink Darjeeling Petites look darling tucked into the sink with the Portrait of a Lady chipboard?

Ooh-la-la!  Flower Clusters!

Just look at these gorgeous flower clusters!  If you really want to create a visual impact, cluster several flowers together in little bouquets.  These showy mini bouquets are made with a combination of Darjeeling Cream Anemones with Darjeeling Pink Petites and Botanica Soft Pink Mini Blooms.

Here’s the view from the opposite side of the page.

To keep with the shabby chic vibe of this layout, I dry brushed Tattered Rose Distress Paint onto this Prima resin frame.  Next, while the paint was still wet, I sprinkled it with Shabby Pink Embossing Enamel and heat set it.

Do you use chipboard in your crafting? What’s your favorite way to alter it?  I’d love to hear from you in the comment section below.

Visit the Petaloo Blog all this week for more chippie inspiration and don’t forget to comment so you can win one of the wonderful prize packs.

Thanks for stopping by!

Tealightful Tea Party Banner and Video

Tealightful Tea Party Banner with Petaloo Spring Posies

Hello, Friends!  Little girls love tea parties!  It’s a fact.  Our middle “Little” Julia loves them so much that she’s chosen to have an American Girl Tea Party Birthday this year.  I spent the weekend creating this pinkalicious, very girly Tealightful tea party banner using Petaloo posies and designer papers from Pebbles.

Tealightful tea party banner by Kathy Clement for Petaloo International Photo 1Banners are fun to make, but tough to capture in a photograph.  So, I went ahead and made a very short (under 3 minute) video tour of the banner and cards so you can really get a feel for it.  I  will include still photos as well, as I know you like to study those.

Tealightful Tea Party Banner Details

You’re My Cup of Tea Easel Birthday Card

You're My Cup of Tea Easel Card by Kathy Clement for Petaloo International Photo 1To continue with the tea party theme, I put together this very girly easel card.

You're My Cup of Tea Easel Card by Kathy Clement for Petaloo International Photo 2Make the stopper for your card by backing an image with chipboard or foam tape.  Cluster pretty Vintage Velvet pansies around the image to add more texture.  This will help the card stay in the display position. Cut little banner flags from paper scraps to add even more fun to the card.

Tealightful Tea Party Invites and Thank You Notes

Tealightful Tea Party Invites and Note Cards by Kathy Clement for Petaloo International Photo 1I was having such fun playing with these pretty Tealightful papers that I went ahead and made some very simple party invites and thank you notes to go with the ensemble.  Although the cards are very, very simple, I dressed them up a little with either a pink butterfly or a vintage velvet pansy.

Now I can’t wait for Julia’s birthday party!  As she says to me when we play tea party together, “Pinkies Up!”

The Wearin’ O’ the Green: St. Patrick’s Day Easel Card

St. Patrick’s Day Easel Card for Petaloo International

Oh, the Top of the Mornin’ to you,  my friends!  There are so many things to be happy about today.  It’s March, which means Spring is on its way.  Soon the earth will be bursting with beautiful spring flowers and tender green leaves.  And, we get to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this month!  Since I have Irish roots in my family tree, I love this holiday.  We eat fish and chips, enjoy an ice cold Guinness, I bake Irish Soda Bread and we all wear green.  Today’s St. Patrick’s Day Easel Card is definitely green!

St. Patrick's Day Easel Card by Kathy Clement for Petaloo International Photo 1Believe it or not, with the exception of the gorgeous Petaloo blossoms,  this card was made entirely with bits and bobs from my scrap bin.  I went foraging for every scrap of leftover green paper I could find…which turned out to be quite a bit.  Some of this is Christmas paper, some bits are mixed media backgrounds I created long ago.  The sweet vintage style image came to me as an “extra helping” from an order I made at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.  It felt so good to create something new and pretty with all these bits and pieces. Do you ever do this?

Green, Green and More Green

St. Patrick's Day Easel Card by Kathy Clement for Petaloo International Photo 2After stitching all the patterned papers together, I mounted them onto this 5.5″ square easel card base.  Then the real fun began!  I dug through my Gypsy Soul Lasercuts chippies and found this stunning Victoria Small Layered Border.  After treating the bottom layer with Antique Gold Embossing Powder, I painted the top layer with Antique Linen Distress Paint.  The two layers were glued together and secured with binder clips until the glue set. After that, I glued it on the left hand side of the card base.

St. Patrick's Day Easel Card by Kathy Clement for Petaloo International Photo 3While that was going on, I die cut 3 Tim Holtz Ornate frames and layered them together with strips of foam tape.  Then I trimmed the image and glued it to the back of the frame.  To add even more depth, I backed the frame with two layers of waste chipboard.  Next, I glued it to the center of my card base.

St. Patrick's Day Easel Card by Kathy Clement for Petaloo International Photo 4Now for the ribbon cluster!  The base layer is a triple loop bow tied with Moss Green Gingham ribbon.  I looped a gold tassel over the center of the bow, then topped it with these gorgeous Pistachio Green Anemones.  These bodacious flowers are so flirty!   The ruffled layers of petals add the perfect shabby chic touch to the design.  Finally, I tied this itty  bitty teacup charm to the frame with gold metallic string.

St. Patrick’s Day Easel Card: Building the Stopper

St. Patrick's Day Easel Card by Kathy Clement for Petaloo International Photo 5One of the reasons I love to make easel cards is that they display so nicely.  To achieve this, you have to build a “stopper”  to hold the front cover of the card open.  I began the process by laying down a strip of antique crochet trim about midway up the interior of the card.  Next, I die cut the green striped paper and matted it with green cardstock.  I softened the edges by dry brushing on a little Antique Linen Distress Paint. Gold brads hold the number plaques in place.  Finally, I backed it with waste chipboard and glued it in place.

St. Patrick's Day Easel Card by Kathy Clement for Petaloo International Photo 6But it looked a little lonely there all by itself.  To remedy this, I anchored the corners with Darjeeling Green Mini Garden Rosettes and Green Hydrangea.  I was careful to glue just the bottom petals to the striped paper so that the card could open and close.  The finishing touch is that cute little shamrock charm.  It was originally silver, but I painted it gold.  I added the labels and was finally happy.

The Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow

St. Patrick's Day Easel Card by Kathy Clement for Petaloo International Photo 7Every St. Patrick’s Day Easel Card needs a pot of gold tucked in somewhere, right?  So I added a gift card pocket to the card and filled it with an individually wrapped chocolate. Since I had a couple pieces of mixed media paper on the desk I cut them into little banner flags and glued them in place. Finally,  I created the sentiments on the computer, printed them out and added them to finish off the card.

St. Patrick's Day Easel Card by Kathy Clement for Petaloo International Photo 8Here’s what the card looks like folded shut.

Do you do anything fun or special for St. Patrick’s Day?  I remember dressing for school when I was little, and you had to be sure to wear green so you wouldn’t get pinched!  Fun memories…and that’s what paper crafting is all about.

Thanks for joining me here today!  May the road rise up to meet you!

All You Need is Love and a Cat Mini Album

Petaloo Pets Week: All You Need is Love and a Cat Mini Album

Hello, Friends!  Are you enjoying Petaloo Pets week?  Yesterday I celebrated dogs with a sweet little shabby chic folio.  Today, it’s all about CATS!  This All You Need is Love and a Cat Mini Album is purr-fectly shabby chic, filled with fun interactive elements and loaded with simple techniques you can use in any crafty endeavor.  Let’s take a look,. shall we?

All You Need is Love and a Cat Mini Album by Kathy Clement of Kathy by Design, Photo 1While straightening up the Closet of Shame, I ran across this nifty mini album base.  Made with heavy book board, the album had plain kraft covers and a handy ring binder mechanism.  I dressed it up with papers from Authentique’s Devoted collection, a canvas spine and lots of shabby chic details.

All You Need is Love and a Cat Mini Album by Kathy Clement of Kathy by Design, Photo 2The focal image is this pretty kitty in an altered Prima frame.  Paints and seed beads add whimsy and texture to the formerly white frame.  The frame is surrounded by gorgeous Petaloo flowers, custom dyed seam binding ribbon, novelty buttons and a second, smaller vintage framed image.

All You Need is Love and a Cat Mini Album by Kathy Clement of Kathy by Design, Photo 3The frame was painted with a cream chalk paint followed by a light coat of Tattered Rose Distress Paint.  Finally, I tapped the raised edges with Vintage Photo Distress paint to make them pop.

Every shabby chic project needs flowers!  For this album, I’ve added Teal Mini Wild Roses, Blue Mini Wild Roses, Teal Forget me Nots, Antique Beige Wild Roses and Ivory Burlap Textured Blossoms from Petaloo, of course!

All You Need is Love and a Cat Mini Album by Kathy Clement of Kathy by Design, Photo 4I didn’t like the plain kraft spine, so I dressed it up with a strip of canvas that I attached with Scor-Tape.  The nubby texture and ivory fabric add to the shabby chic vibe.  This little antique bronze lion charm added just the right touch of whimsy to the spine.

Thinking outside the button box

All You Need is Love and a Cat Mini Album by Kathy Clement of Kathy by Design, Photo 5If you’ve followed my blog for any length of time, you know I have a “thing” for buttons.  This love for buttons started when I was a child and my mom let me string buttons from my grandmother’s button box while I was sick in bed.  In later years, I inherited that button box along with all the beautiful vintage buttons inside it.  Like most collections, it grew…and grew…and grew!  Thankfully, I love to use buttons to embellish my projects.

For this fun button feature, I encircled a “framed” image with pretty buttons.  But do you want to guess how that frame was made?  Yep.  It’s a big button!  I used a paper punch to cut out the sweet vintage image of the girl and her kitty, glued it into the center of the button and then filled the button with Glossy Accents.  That’s how you think outside the button box!

It’s OK to Stagger!

All You Need is Love and a Cat Mini Album by Kathy Clement of Kathy by Design, Photo 6When cutting the pages for this mini album, I decided it would be fun to create pages that were sized and shaped differently.

All You Need is Love and a Cat Mini Album by Kathy Clement of Kathy by Design, Photo 7These staggered edges lend a playful, whimsical feel to the album and invite you to turn pages, open folders and peek inside pockets.

All You Need is Love and a Cat Mini Album YouTube Video

Because I find it hard to really get a feel for the flow of a mini album with still photos, I created this YouTube video tour.  In the tour, I share tips for using scraps, creating custom embellishments and making interactive elements.  I hope you enjoy!

Thank you so much for joining me here today!  If you have any questions about this project, feel free to ask in the comment section below.
