Prima Lavender Party Dress Card Folio for Throwback Thursday

Hello, Friends!  Today’s Throwback Thursday is a Prima Lavender Party Dress Card Folio.  While cleaning out the Closet of Shame, I ran across a bunch of lovely chipboard pieces and a flash of inspiration!  Who doesn’t love having a new party dress for spring?  I know, right?  So after a bit more digging, I decided to use this lovely, retired 2017 Prima collection for our Throwback Thursday this week.

Put on Your Party Dress

Mixed Media Techniques for Chipboard Prima Lavender Laserowe Love by Kathy Clement Photo 01

Chipboard is such a wonderful addition to a card design.  You can paint it, cover it with paper, spritz it with mist or, as I did on today’s card, alter it with embossing powder.  This is probably my favorite way to alter chipboard.  Why, you may ask?  Because it is fast, easy and looks terrific!  It will probably take me longer to tell you the steps I followed than it did for me to actually do them.  Here’s how I took this brown paper bag dress to party dress with a little mixed media magic.

  • First, tap the entire surface of the chipboard with VersaMark ink.  Be generous!
  • Next, lightly shake a closed jar of Stampendous Shabby Ivory Embossing Enamel.  This helps mix the particles evenly throughout the mix.
  • Now place the chipboard in a funnel tray or on a piece of printer paper.  Gently shake the embossing powder out over the surface.  You are aiming for even coverage.
  • Then carefully pick up the chipboard and let any loose granules roll off onto the printer paper or into the tray.  Do not tap or flick the back of the chipboard!  Just let gravity do its thing!
  • Now you want to pre-heat your heat gun for a few seconds.  Use tweezers to hold the edge of the chipboard and use the heat gun to melt the granules.  Keep the gun moving at all times.  Chipboard will burn.
  • Heat the granules until the gold flecks start to melt and puddle into the ivory granules.  Now this chip is perfectly cooked!

Take it to the Next Level

The dress is very pretty at this point.  But I wanted to take it to the next level.  So once the chip had cooled, I spritzed it lightly with some Lavender Fields Glimmer Mist that I had in my stash.  Then I gently heated the embossing enamel a second time.  The embossing medium will “open” and allow the mist to sink into the mix, creating a lovely impressionistic pattern on the dress.

I also inked the edges of the dress with Dusty Concord Distress Oxides.  Then I spritzed and flicked water to make some pretty inky puddles.  You can play with this technique.  It’s fun!

TIP:  Adhere an acetate floral overlay from the Lavender Collection to the center of the dress to create soft pattern and design.  Use a dries clear adhesive for this step.  It’s pretty magical, if I do say so myself!

Finishing Touches

Add some pretty ribbons, trims and posies and this dress is ready for the prom!

A Peek Inside

Party Dress Card Folio Prima Lavender by Kathy Clement

I decided to create a little folio inside the card base.  The top half is an accordion pull-out with a ribbon closure.

Layer up bits and bobs on the cover to create a pretty collage.

Here’s a peek at the pages inside the 4 3/4″ x 7 3/4″ folio.  Lots of lovely room for photos and journaling the story of a wedding, anniversary, prom, birthday party or bridal shower.

Here’s a little process video showing how this card folio came together.   I hope you enjoy!

And that’s it for Throwback Thursday this week!  I’ll be adding this little ditty to my Etsy shop if you’d like to see it in real life.

I’ll add a supply list below.  Thanks so much for stopping by!

SUPPLY LIST

***Please note: Since Throwback Thursday posts are designed to encourage us to use up paper pretties from our stash, I use a lot of retired items in these projects.  This means I may not be able to provide a link to all the supplies used.  Thanks for understanding!

Prima Lavender Lilac Season Banner

Prima Lavender Lilac Season Banner

Hello, Friends!  How about a little Prima Lavender Lilac Season Banner on this fine Friday morning?

Prima Lavender Lilac Season Banner by Kathy Clement Kathy by Design Photo 01

Growing up in Vermont, I looked forward to lilac season every year.  Our little town was filled with ancient lilac bushes that had actually grown into trees.  Branches groaned under the weight of the fragrant blossoms.  Lilac Season was a favorite because it also meant that winter was well and truly over.  Lilacs always seemed to manage to bloom in time for Memorial Day (which was on May 30th when I was growing up.)  My mother and I would get up early and pick lilacs that were dripping with dew.  Then we would arrange them in large baskets to decorate the family graves at the local cemetery.  I know that sounds morbid, but it was actually a joyful day.  We shared memories and stories of our loved ones while we cleaned up the grave site.  Did anyone else have this experience growing up?

I love to make banners, and this one was created as a special order in my Etsy shop for a dear friend.  They sure are hard to photograph, though!  Let me share some detail photos, tips and tricks with you.

Prima Lavender Lilac Season Banner: Getting Started

Prima Lavender Lilac Season Banner by Kathy Clement Kathy by Design Photo 03

I used the same basic techniques to make this banner as the ones used for my Prima Spring Farmhouse Country Chic Banner.   Here’s how it comes together:

  • First, die cut 4 pennants from Prima Lavender Paper Collection using the largest ( #1) die in the My Favorite Things  STAX Stitched Banner Die Set.
  • Next, die cut 4 of the #4 pennants.
  • Then machine stitch each pennant on to canvas or burlap.  Cut around the pennant shape and fringe the edges.
  • Now adhere onto MFT Wild Wisteria cardstock and trim around the shape, leaving about an eighth of an inch border on all sides.
  • Now, space the banners out evenly on a long piece ( about 4 feet) of  1 1/2″ wide Champagne Silky Crush Ribbon.  Hold the pennants in place with binder clips.
  • Stitch all the pennants onto the ribbon along the top edge.  Then turn the banner and stitch a second time along the bottom edge of the ribbon.  This will cause the banner to lay nice and flat.
  • Tie bows with Light Orchid Double Faced Satin Ribbon, and hot glue onto the pennants.

Now you are ready to decorate!

Flowers, buttons, burlap string, journal cards and mini doilies are great ways to add texture and interest to a banner.  But you can also just make the basic pennant shape and hang it, as this paper is soooo pretty.  Here’s a look at the details:

Prima Lavender Blooming Marvelous Flip Folio for Frilly and Funkie

Prima Lavender Blooming Marvelous Flip Folio for the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog

Hello, Friends!  Even though the weather has made it hard to believe, Spring is on the way!  And with spring comes beautiful blooms!  That’s what we’re celebrating this go round on the Frilly and Funkie Challenge blog where the amazing Zoe is our hostess.  I’ve created a Prima Lavender Blooming Marvelous Flip Folio to share with you today, but first, let’s see what our gracious hostess, Zoe, has to say about this challenge:

Challenge Theme: Bloomin’ Marvellous
As spring pokes its head through the frozen ground, let’s celebrate the season and create a vintage or shabby chic project with flowers as the focus and in vintage muted pastel tones, (no brights).

You’d have to look far and wide to find a collection that fits the parameters of this challenge better than Prima Lavender. Not only does it make me think of the pretty hyacinths that are the first spring flowers to break through the soil,  it’s also filled to the brim with floral images and soft vintage pastels.

This 4.75″ x 7″ flip folio started with two 5″ x 7″ side fold card bases.  I simply added a couple of extra score lines to create double 1/2″ spines.  Then I went to work adding all sorts of flips, flaps, hidden pockets and tuck spots.  What fun!

One of the things that drew me to this collection is the beautiful rose gold foiled accents on the 12×12 paper pad.  Of course, I love the shabby/vintage vibe of all the papers, but that rose gold foiling reeled me in!  I decided to create a shaker frame using some of it along with Tim’s wonderful Ornate Frame Bigz die.

Prima Lavender Blooming Marvelous Flip Folio: The Shaker Element

Here’s how I made this shaker element:

  • First, die cut two sets of the frame from thick cardstock.
  • Now die cut another frame using the rose gold foiled paper from the 12×12 pad.
  • Next, ink both frames with Dusty Concord Distress Ink and a blending tool.
  • Then stack both oval chipboard centers and glue together.
  • Now cover the top oval layer with the reverse side of oval center from the paper frame.  Decorate with stickers or elements from the collection.
  • Now, cover the top frame with the die cut rose gold paper,  making sure everything is lined up.  I find that liquid glue works best for this task.

  • Next, I used my crafting hammer to sort of bang both those ovals back into the center of the inked frame.  You might not need to use a hammer, but I did.
  • Then, trace around the inside of the frame onto a sheet of clear acetate cardstock.  If you don’t have this in your stash, you can always cut up clear plastic packaging. Cut the acetate oval out and glue it to the back side of the frame.  I use Art Institute Dries Clear Adhesive for this.  Use a baby wipe to clean away any excess glue.
  • Next, with the frame face down, add a double layer of Kool-Tak Clear Foam Adhesive to the inner rim of the frame. I like to use this clear foam tape as it does not show through the openings in the die cut frame.
  • Fill the inside of the frame with your shaker elements.  I used sequins and glitter here.  Don’t overfill or the shaker won’t seal properly.
  • Finally, remove the liner from the foam tape and place the prepared frame back over it so that everything lines up. Press firmly to seal.
  • Now shake it up, baby!
Prima Lavender Blooming Marvelous Flip Folio: The ribbon closure

Before you decorate your folio cover, you will want to add a ribbon closure.  I added a layer of white netting and wide crochet lace before adding the gingham ribbon closure.

Secure these layers with 1/2″ Scor-Tape.

Now the fun begins!  There are 3 sections inside the folio, each filled with flaps and flips and all sorts of wonderful interactive elements.

This is just a sample of what lies within.  You can see all the elements in the YouTube Video tour below.
