Throwback Thursday Spring Farmhouse Card Tutorial

Hello, Friends!  Today I’m inviting you into my design process in a special Throwback Thursday Prima Spring Farmhouse Card Tutorial.  I thought it would be fun to let you peek over my shoulder as I “free create” this collage style card from scraps of this lovely paper collection.  There are no notes and no plan in this video.  It’s just me and my paper and a basic vision for where I want to go.  Does that sound interesting to you?  Then read on!

Spring Farmhouse Beautiful Life Card from Scraps

This 5 1/2″ square box style card is made entirely from scraps.  The video tutorial below will take you step by step through my thought process in designing the card.  First we build the base from kraft cardstock.  Then we use scraps of designer paper to build a background.  Next we add fussy cuts and layers to add dimension and depth to the card design.  I’m hoping you will find this process to be entertaining and instructive.  It will be interesting to hear your thoughts after you watch the video.

Out of Bounds

See this little tag cluster?  It’s one of my favorite elements in the card design.  It actually extends beyond the card borders.  This is something we don’t often think of doing, but the end result can be dynamic.  You will see how all these little bits and bobs came together in the video tutorial.

The Bow Cluster

Hello, Raw Silk Delicate Stitched Satin Ribbon!  This is a new shade of DSS Ribbon for me, and I absolutely love it paired up with this paper collection and these retired Petaloo Magnolia blossoms.  These were left over from my time on the Petaloo Design Team.

As an aside, I keep a big old glass cookie jar in my studio where I store loose flowers left over from previous projects.  My granddaughters helped me to sort them into color families.  This makes it easy for me to find just the right flowers in just the right shade.  It also means that I use up all these precious left over bits.  How do you store your leftover flowers?

A Peek Inside:  Tea Party in a Box!

Love pockets?  This card has them in both a standard and an easy-to-make box style.  I think you will love seeing how simple it is to make a box pocket this way.

Decorate little treats with bits of paper scraps, ribbons and flowers to create a Tea Party in the Box for the inside of the card.  This tea party is serving Ghiradelli chocolate, White Tea, Honey, and Cookies.  There’s a bitty honey dipper and vintage demitasse spoon tied up with a bit of ribbon along with a lovely little note card tucked into the pockets.

Prima Spring Farmhouse Pop Up Anniversary Card

Prima Spring Farmhouse Pop Up Anniversary Card

Hello, Friends!  Today I’m sharing the Prima Spring Farmhouse Pop Up Anniversary Card that I made for my sweet husband.  Today marks 45 years as man and wife.  Wow!  It seems like it was just yesterday, but when I look back over the long, winding road we’ve traveled together, my heart overflows with gratitude for the beautiful life we have been given.

We met in Bible College in upstate New York.  An unlikely pairing: me a rock ribbed New England girl, Dale a soft spoken Southern boy.  I was 19…he was 20.  And between the 2 of us we had about a nickel’s worth of common sense.  But we fell in love and we got married.  And I think, although it is hard to imagine, that I love him now more than I did at the first.   Because we were both so young, it’s like we grew up together.  I hardly have an adult memory that does not include Dale.  Isn’t that amazing?

So when I saw this “Such a Beautiful Life” sentiment in the Spring Farmhouse collection, I knew it said exactly what my heart is feeling today.

Such a Beautiful Life…from bits and bobs

Here’s how this simple card came together from bits and bobs of the Spring Farmhouse collection.

  • First, create a 5 1/2″ square card base from 1 sheet of 8 1/2″ x 11″ kraft cardstock.
  • Next, cut a 5 1/4″ square of chocolate brown cardstock as a matting layer.
  • Trim a 4×6 Spring Farmhouse Journal Card to a width of 5 1/8″.  Adhere this at the top of the chocolate brown panel.
  • Now trim out the brown check pattern to fill in the gap between the journal card and the base of the chocolate brown panel.  I had to overlap these two pieces, but it really didn’t matter because I knew the joint would be covered by the other card layers.
  • Then ink the edges of 3″ x 4″ wood grain journal card and adhere it over the background so that it is mostly on the right hand side of the card.
  • Now wrap the left hand side of the card with burlap string.  Tie a knot at the top.  Slip a little key and padlock over the ends of the string (my heart belongs to him alone!)  and tie a knot. Add a small burlap string bow at the top.
Layer and Layers of Memories

  • Next, layer other neutral scraps of paper over kraft and chocolate brown cardstock.
  • Then cut out the old house image and mat on both kraft and brown.  Place dimensionals on the back to really make it pop.
  • Use a tag die to cut out the sentiment from the paper collection.  Top with a bow and a button.  Place dimensionals on the back and adhere to the card base.
  • Then adhere the chipboard sentiment “Grow Old With Me…the Best is Yet to Come” to the right of the focal image.
  • Adhere the large button on the right.

This old house makes me think of us.  We’ve had lots of celebrations…and we’ve weathered some storms.  But the walls are still sound…and the roof doesn’t leak…and this man is my home.  Ain’t love grand?

A Peek Inside

I created a little pop-up scene inside the card.  Then I added a stamped sentiment that is so perfectly “us.”  We’ve consumed more than a few peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in lean times…but that’ s OK!  We both like peanut butter and jelly!

The sentiment panel on the top of the card is actually a pocket/tag combo where I wrote my personal note to Dale.  And no…you can’t read it!

Here’s the side view.  If you’ve never made a pop up card, you can find a video tutorial HERE.

We have no big celebrations this year….just a quiet dinner at home with lots of good memories to share with one another and dreams for the future, whatever it may hold.  Just the way we like it!  I’ll be back with a Spring Farmhouse card video tutorial for Throwback Thursday!

Hello Friends!  Happy first day of Spring! It’s a perfect day and time to share this Throwback Thursday Z Fold Pop Up Box Card Tutorial with you.  Since many of us are staying in, and hopefully staying healthy, I thought I’d pop in with a little springtime cheer.  And the Prima Spring Farmhouse collection is just bursting with spring themes.  This dimensional card would make great springtime home decor, too.

The base for this card is 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″.  It folds flat for storage, and opens for display.

A few simple folds allow you to create this dynamic display.  I even found room to add in a little pocket and teeny tiny notecard.

Prima Spring Farmhouse Get Well Card

Prima Spring Farmhouse Get Well Card: How Now Brown Cow?

Hello, Friends!  You don’t usually think of putting a cow on a get well card, do you? But I think the pretty bovine image on this  Prima Spring Farmhouse Get Well Card looks downright cheery.

I’ve lost count of just how many projects I’ve made with this gorgeous paper collection.  It really as been a favorite.  I guess it takes me back to my country roots.  Growing up in Vermont, they always said there were more cows than people.

I had a bunch of scraps left on my desk after having made the Prima Spring Farmhouse Country Chic banner.  Since I needed to make a get well card, I decided it would be easier to make a card than put them away.  Here’s how this 5″ x 7″ card front came together.

Prima Spring Farmhouse Get Well Card: Creating the Layers

Prima Spring Farmhouse Get Well Card by Kathy Clement Kathy by Design Photo 03

  • First, create 5″ x 7″  side fold card base from brown cardstock.
  • I had a scrap of  the butterfly images from the 4″ x 6″ journal cards and tucked this in the upper right hand corner of the card.
  • Then cut a 4 7/8″ x 6 7/8″ mat from pink cardstock.
  • Now, stitch a 4 3/4″ x 6 3/4″ panel of the brown check paper to the pink layer.

TIP:  I like to build my card front “off site.”  In other words, don’t glue the decorative card front to the card base until after the inside of the card has been completed.  This keeps the card front clean and prevents dimensional elements from getting crushed.

  • Next, cut a 4 3/4″ x 2 1/2″ belly band from the heart/dot pattern.  Mat this on a slightly larger scrap of brown cardstock and adhere.
  • Then cut a 4″ square from the gold foiled paper with the bees.  Mat this on both brown and pink cardstock and adhere.
  • Now cut a 31/2″ x 4 1/2 rectangle from the handwriting page.  Mat as before and adhere.
  • Then fussy cut along the top and side of the cow image from the 3″ x 4″ journal cards.  Mat this on a slightly larger piece of brown cardstock.
  • Finish the card front with Prima Spring Farmhouse Flowers and Say It in Crystals enamel dots.  Add in some copper metal corners for a touch of class.  Then add Tulip Taffeta and Brown Micro Gingham Bows for the perfect finishing touch.

Country Chic Banner Spring Farmhouse

Country Chic Banner Spring Farmhouse

Hello, Friends!  Happy Friday!  I stole a few minutes of free play time yesterday to make this country chic banner with Prima Spring Farmhouse papers.  The idea has been rattling around in my brain ever since I purchased the collection but I just haven’t had the time to bring it to life.  Now, banners are one of my most favorite things to make….and one of my least favorite things to photograph.  I worked for hours editing these photos, and just could not get them to really represent how pretty this banner is in real life.  So even though Julia Child admonished us to “never apologize, never explain,”  I am apologizing in advance.  But I thought you would want to see them in case you are looking for a little springtime home decor.

To create the pennants for the banner, I die cut chocolate brown cardstock with a banner die from My Favorite Things.  The second layer is pink burlap that I free hand cut to fit between the brown gingham patterned paper, also cut with a die.  Since the largest die measures just 3 1/2″ across, I was able to use a lot of the scraps left over from earlier Spring Farmhouse Projects.  So that is a win!

Country Chic Banner Spring Farmhouse: The Details

Tulip Pink Taffeta bows are topped with brown micro gingham. A while back, I found a whole bag of hand crocheted doilies at an estate sale.  These are added to the banner to provide more texture and to add to the farmhouse vibe.

I think this banner would look so pretty hanging in the kitchen.

Someday, I’ll tell you all the story about my mom and the cow.  It’s a good one!  This image brought that story back to my mind, and I had a good laugh over it.

The pennants are machine stitched onto a very pretty beige netting.  In real life, the colors are soft and dreamy.  I think the fact that the photos were shot on a very overcast day affected the colors.  But at least you get the idea.  If you’d like to purchase it, you can find it in my ETSY shop…but there’s only one!

I hope I’ve shared some ideas to inspire you in your own crafty adventures.  If so, I’d love to hear from you in the comment section below.
