Stamperia Alice Tea Party Treasure Box

Stamperia Alice Tea Party Treasure Box for Mother May I at Frilly & Funkie

Hello, Friends!  Today I have a Stamperia Alice Tea Party Treasure Box made for the latest challenge over on the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog. We’ll take a look at it in a moment, but first, let’s see what the sensational Suzz, our hostess, has to say about the challenge.

Challenge Theme: Mother May I?

May in the U.S. is when we celebrate Mother’s Day and honor our mothers.  I am challenging you to create something that is vintage or shabby chic which is inspired by your Mother or any mother figure in your life.  It can be a favorite memory, something based on  her style, something she said/says to you, or anything that reminds you of your mother figure.  Make sure to share with us how your mother inspired your art!

Stamperia Alice Tea Party Treasure Box: The Inspiration

Always an avid reader, my mother instilled her love for books, stories and poems deep within my heart.  Some of my fondest childhood memories involve Mom reading aloud.  She was a fluid and expressive reader, and got completely lost in a good book.

I can remember seeing her prop an open book on the windowsill above the kitchen sink so she could read while she was doing dishes.  Or, she would have a book beside her on the ironing board while she pressed the family laundry.

I come from a family where money was scarcer than hen’s teeth…but by golly, we had books: hundreds of them.  Mom had memorized thousands of lines from Shakespeare, The Bible, Robert Frost and Edgar A. Guest, one of her favorite poets.  And as I shared a couple of weeks ago in THIS post, she had also memorized  Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll.  What joy it was to listen to those nonsensical syllables roll effortlessly off her tongue.

To honor Mom’s love for literature, I chose to create this Eileen Hull Treasure Box with Stamperia’s Alice collection.

Stamperia Alice Tea Party Treasure Box: Pretty in Pink

Mom’s favorite color was pink.  She wore pink lipstick, loved pink flowers, and even had a pink pair of tennis shoes that she wore with her house dresses.  Naturally, I had to top my Treasure Box with Pink Posies, in honor of Mom.

I also gained my taste for a nicely brewed cup of tea from Mom.  She would have loved the little tea party that’s neatly laid out on the lid of my treasure box.

TIP: Add dimension and depth to paper flowers by dry brushing them with chalk paint.  Place a small amount of liquid adhesive on a make up sponge, tap the petals lightly, then sprinkle with glitter for even more fun.  Prills can be added in the same way.

TIP: Turn a flat piece of paper into a 3-D embellishment.  Fussy cut this teacup from the paper collection, but leave an extra 1/4″ x 1/2″ on the bottom edge of the image.   Use your scissors to cut little “v” slots along the bottom edge.  Then fold these tabs back and adhere them to the base.  Hot glue a flower behind the teacup to keep it upright.

Stamperia Alice Tea Party Treasure Box: The Cast of Characters

The tarts for this tea party are thoughtfully provided by the King of Hearts.

TIP: Create side panels by cutting a focal image to about 2 3/8″.  Mat on waste chipboard and adhere to the sides.  This is a fun way to make a large image fit a small space.

Entertainment brought to you by the Mad Hatter, one of Mom’s favorite characters. (“Oh, isn’t he a silly one, Kathy?”)

And if I had a dollar for every cup of tea I shared with Mom…well, I would be financially set for life!

TIP: Cut hinges from Kraft Tex paper.  This product cuts like paper, but has the strength of fabric.  I cut 4 hinges for this box.  Then I doubled them up and adhered them to the back.

TIP: Chalk paint is a great finish for these Graphic 45  Antique Brass Claw Feet.  Create little chippy areas by sanding the edges very lightly with a fine grit sandpaper.  Easy does it!

Stamperia Alice Tea Party Treasure Box: What’s Inside?

Three little Eileen Hull Notebooks nest neatly inside the Treasure Box. Each one is finished with a unique page design, making for even more fun.  (I’ll share all of that along with some great tips and tricks  in the video tour below.)

Stamperia Alice Tea Party Treasure Box: Photo Tour with Tips and Tricks

Since I share so much information about these Notebooks in the video tour, I’ll just post the photos  with a few random tips and tricks here.

The Alice Notebook is up first.  Machine stitching, distressed edges and a burlap spine add lots of texture.

TIP: Mustard seeds from your spice cabinet add lots of fun texture to a project.  Remember to look for embellishments in unexpected places.

TIP: Use Alcohol Inks to alter metals quickly and easily.  This White Rabbit Charm has been altered with Tim Holtz Rose Gold Mixative.

TIP:  Accordion fold a strip of the playing cards to make a fun pop up element.  To adhere to the album base, fold the accordion shut.  Place adhesive on the back side of the bottom card.  Then place adhesive on the back side of the top card and close the book.  Adjust the fold so that the album opens and closes with ease.

Stamperia Alice Tea Party Treasure Box: The White Rabbit

The second notebook is all about the White Rabbit.

This notebook features two accordion fold pages.  The one on the left is tied into the notebook, while the one on the right is held shut with a belly band and can be removed completely.

Stamperia Alice Tea Party Treasure Box: Eat Me/Drink Me Notebook

The 3rd notebook is all about Tea Time!

I’ve built a box pocket and a little treat wallet inside this notebook.  Can you guess what is inside?

Stamperia Alice ATC Tea Box Mini Album Tutorial for Frilly and Funkie Saturday Showcase

I’ve already shared a sneak peek of the project with you, and you can review that HERE if you wish.   But why don’t you grab a cuppa and a snack, and we’ll dive into this photo and information heavy post.

Stamperia Alice ATC Tea Box Mini Album Tutorial: ATC Box Details and Tips

Pop a fussy cut teapot up on foam dots, then add a Graphic 45 Die Cut Clock behind it to create a feeling of depth and dimension.  The clock die is a perfect fit for the box.

The base is a Graphic 45 ATC Book Box, which is too cute for words! To create the tag closure, simply follow these easy steps:

  • First, score two of the ATC tags that come in the box 1 1/2″ from the domed edge.  Fold and burnish well.
  • Next, use the Graphic 45 ATC tag die to cut 4 liners for the tags (front and back for each tag).  Adhere these to the tags, then score, fold and burnish a second time.
  • Now center and adhere the tags to the box lid and bottom.  See?  I told you it was easy!

I’ve added a spoon from my collection to decorate the spine.  Glossy Accents works really well for this.  To make the bun feet, follow these simple steps:

  • First, adhere two 1″ wooden bingo chips together.
  • Next, wrap the outside edge with 1/2″ Scor-Tape.
  • Then, cut a  5/8″ strip of designer paper from scraps and wrap it around the Scor-Tape.  Done!

Because you have to fit the ATC Mini Album inside the box, you will have to keep the elements fairly flat so that the lid will close. So I fussy cut and layered a few simple elements from the collection onto the front, then tied the bow.  Easy peasy.

The 2 3/4″ x 3 5/8″ mini album is slightly larger than regulation ATC size, but close enough for me.  You will learn how to custom build it to fit inside the G45 ATC box.

Wrap burlap around the spine. This not only looks great, but it helps to strengthen the integrity of the spine.  Then attach ribbon with 1/2″ Scor-Tape to serve as a closure mechanism.

The trick to creating a small album with 12×12 papers is making things fit.  To solve this, I scored border pieces like this 12″ strip then accordion folded to  make it fit.

On the reverse side, I added sentiment tea bag tags that I’ve been saving.

The album is made up of (3) 2 1/2″ x 3 5/8″ page units.  Each page unit is actually 4 separate pages with flap features or turn pages and a pocket.  I tucked a tea bag into the pocket of each page unit.

The left hand page is a 2 1/4″ wide strip of designer paper from the collection.  It is nearly three times the height of the page.  In order to use it, I scored it into 3 sections, cut tab corners, added magnets and folded to create a little folio to hold ATC cards.   The page on the right has a fun turn tab feature.

Belly Bands are a quick and easy way to add interest to an album.  Just score 1/2″ flaps on each side of a scrap piece of paper, then tuck tags from the paper collection behind it.    The right hand page is actually a bookmark that I turned into a fold down page.

How fun is that?

This flap page lifts to reveal a pocket and teacup.

This fussy cut teapot is scored in half.  Then I glued the right hand half to the page, folded it, and added adhesive to the left hand side.  Close the page, and voila!  It’s perfectly set!

Stamperia Alice ATC Boxed Mini Album

Stamperia Alice ATC Boxed Mini Album for Frilly and Funkie March Madness Challenge

Hello Friends!  Today I have a stinkin’ cute Stamperia Alice ATC Boxed Mini Album to share with you.  I created this adorable project for the latest challenge over on the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog. Our clever Suzz is acting as hostess this go round.  We’ll take a look at the project in a second, but first, let’s see what Suzz has to say about this fabulous challenge.

Challenge Theme:  March Madness
Don’t be afraid, the challenge isn’t going to require you to use basketball inspired images.  Instead I want you to be inspired by Alice in Wonderland.  I started from this quote of a conversation between the Mad Hatter and Alice:  The Mad Hatter asks Alice: “Have I gone Mad?”  and Alice replies “I am afraid so.  You’re entirely bonkers. But I’ll tell you a secret.   All the best people are.”  The challenge is to take any idea or concept from this wonderful tale to inspire your project.  There are so many wonderful bits or pieces to be inspired by like the Queen of Hearts, the mad hatter, the looking glass, tea party or Alice herself.    The possibilities are endless.  Anything can be your inspiration but make sure you reference what inspired your art from the story!

Stamperia Alice ATC Boxed Mini Album : The Inspiration

I grew up reading an Illustrated Classics Hardcover Deluxe Edition of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.  My older brother David gave it to me one Christmas when I was about 8 years old.  I’ve lost count of how many times I read it and pored over the gorgeous full color illustrations and engravings.  My mother had memorized the entire “Jabberwocky” poem and used to recite it to me (along with The Walrus and the Carpenter) as we dried supper dishes together.  So to say that I love this  challenge theme is an understatement.

Stamperia’s “Alice” captures all the whimsy and beauty of my own beloved volume, so I chose to work with their 12×12 collection.  My original idea was to create a Mad Hatter’s Tea Box. Then my imagination began to run wild. I ended up making this ATC sized Mini Album housed in this Graphic 45 ATC Book Box.

This might be the cutest project I have ever made.  The Graphic 45 ATC Box measures just 3 1/2″ x 4 3/4″.   I created a 2 7/8″ x 3 3/4″ ATC Mini Album to fit inside the box.

Because I’m sharing  a tutorial for making the Mini Album Base and page units on Saturday over on the Frilly and Funkie Saturday Showcase, I’m not going to share any details at this time.  I will tell you that this little album is loaded with interactive features and fun surprises, so I hope you’ll join me on Saturday for the big reveal.

Now It’s YOUR Turn!

You are cordially invited to join in on this fun challenge.  To do so, simply create your own vintage or shabby chic Alice-inspired project.   Then link  up on the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog before 11:55PM EST on Tuesday, April 9th.
