Christmas Home Decor Altered Spoon Tutorial with Hairspray Crackle Paint Technique
Hello, Friends! It’s Wildcard Wonderful Wednesday and I have a really fun Christmas Home Decor Altered Spoon Tutorial to share with you. Quite some time ago I nabbed an interesting old wooden spoon from a yard sale with the intention of altering it. That spoon has popped up in drawers, closets, work tables and bins ever since. I finally got tired of moving it from place to place and decided it would make a great Christmas Kitchen decoration.
Along with the spoon, I pulled various paints and supplies out on the table and began a grand experiment. The goal was to create a crackle finish on my spoon without using a fancy crackle medium. First I tried white glue. When that did not give the desired results, I raided my bathroom vanity for a can of hairspray. You can watch the video tutorial to see how that technique worked.
Woodland Vignette
Once we create a successful crackle finish, we want to dress our spoon up for Christmas. This big spoon had a nice, deep bowl. The perfect spot to create a pretty Christmas scene! I’ll show you how to colorize the plastic deer with alcohol inks and build the scene in the video tutorial.
If you look at the spoon handle, you’ll see the pretty crackle effect. I love the vintage vibe that you get from a crackle effect.
Floral Topper and Dangle Charm
Part of the challenge I faced in this project was figuring out how to attach a pretty floral topper. It took some trial and error, but I finally found the solution.
TIP: Add a little color to your spoon art! Back cut out tags from the Ciao Bella Christmas Vibes A4 Pad and mat them on heavy weight cardstock scraps. Then dry brush the edges with white paint. Now punch a hole in the top of the tags and string them into the O ring at the top of the spoon.

I hope you enjoyed watching that as much as I enjoyed making it. The spoon is currently hanging from a shelf in my studio, and I’m tempted to keep it for display in my kitchen this Christmas.
Did I share any helpful tips and/or techniques this week? I’d love to hear about it in the comment section below.

My goodness what a wonderful project Kathy. Love all the texture and dimension. Isn’t it amazing what a simple disguarded spoon can become! Another snap moment too as I had not long finished using some crackle paste with a stencil on a card all about entomology. There is definitely going to be some serious looking at op shops and dump shops as we call them here for wooden spoons. Thanks for taking the time for an extra video this month as it is worthy of more than one viewing to take in all the techniques.
Beautiful craft decor! Will have to try the hair spray crackle technique. Crackle paste is so expensive!!! I would like the sunflower theme. Thank you Kathy. Hugs!
Really cute project! I’m trying to make more decor items to use up my (extensive) stash, and this gives me all kinds of ideas!!
What a great altered spoon! Love everything you have done to give it the vintage look. I’ve never heard of the hairspray technique for crackling so will have to give it a try. I would like the sunflower theme on the tag of the month and can’t wait to see what you do. Thanks for sharing.
