Heartfelt Creations Alumni Hop: Classic Sunflower Birthday Card Folio

Hello, Friends!  Welcome to the Heartfelt Creations August Alumni Hop!  I’m the first stop on this inspiration filled hop, and I’m so happy to have you hop along.  this spring, I planted sunflowers for the very first time, and guess what?  They are blooming!  I’m so excited, as sunflowers are my favorite summer bloom.  Inspired by my garden, I created this pretty Classic Sunflower Birthday Card Folio.

Heartfelt Creations Classic Sunflower Birthday Card Folio by Kathy Clement Photo 1The Classic Sunflower Collection has always been one of my all time favorites from Heartfelt Creations.   Sunflowers just make me all happy inside!  These sunshiny birthday greetings are layered onto a 6.75″ x 7″ top fold card base with a 1/2″ spine.

Heartfelt Creations Classic Sunflower Birthday Card Folio by Kathy Clement Photo 2Don’t you just love these gorgeous patterned papers?  This buttery yellow Chevron Striped Ribbon is the perfect playmate for the golden hues of the paper collection.

Classic Sunflower Birthday Folio: Creating the Classic Sunflowers

Heartfelt Creations Classic Sunflower Birthday Card Folio by Kathy Clement Photo 3I forgot to take notes while making my card this month, so I don’t have a tutorial for you.  I can tell you the steps I followed to make the flowers, however.

  1. First, select the yellow text from the Classic Sunflower Paper Collection. Stamping onto designer paper is a huge time saver!  You don’t have to color your flower layers, and the patterned paper gives the finished flowers a gorgeous depth.
  2. Next Stamp the Classic Sunflowers with ColorBox Dark Brown Fluid Chalk Ink.
  3. Then heat emboss with clear embossing powder.
  4. Now, die cut the flowers with the matching Classic Sunflower Die.
  5. Next, use sponge daubers to add a little Fossilized Amber and Warm Honey Distress Ink to each flower petal.

  1. After lightly misting the flowers with a little water,  shape them with the Deluxe Flower Shaping Kit.
  2. Now, stack your flower layers together with hot glue.
  3. Fill the center of the sunflower with a little Art Institute Dries Clear Adhesive.
  4. Then  fill the centers with  an assortment of Prills.  I used Gilt Trip, Gourd-jus, A Penny Saved, and Express-O Yourself.
  5. Finally, spritz the flowers with Perfect Pearls Sunflower Sparkle Mist, Lemon Zest  and Yellow Daisy Tattered Angels Mists.
Classic Sunflower Birthday Card Folio: A Peek Inside

Heartfelt Creations Classic Sunflower Birthday Card Folio by Kathy Clement Photo 4Because I created my card base with a 1/2″ spine, I was able to turn my card into a pocket filled folio.

Heartfelt Creations Classic Sunflower Birthday Card Folio by Kathy Clement Photo 5The side pocket on the top half of my card contains some lovely photo mounts.  How fun would it be to add snapshots of the birthday girl on the reverse side of these pretty card fronts?

Heartfelt Creations Classic Sunflower Birthday Card Folio by Kathy Clement Photo 6Also made with card fronts, this pretty tea bag wallet provides a spot to write a lovely note, add a photo or tuck in a gift card.

Heartfelt Creations Classic Sunflower Birthday Card Folio by Kathy Clement Photo 7To decorate the bottom half of this Classic Sunflower Gift Card Folio, I layered a lot of my scraps.  this pretty bookmark is also made with scraps, then decorated with the Raindrops on Roses die, burlap woven ribbon and a little charm.

Next, I fussy cut the denim pocket, matted it on kraft cardstock and turned it into a real paper pocket.  And you can’t give someone an empty pocket, right?  So I filled it with a chocolate treat and a little mini journal card where I can write a little note.

I love your vivid yellow sunflower folio and cards. I bought beautiful solid yellow paper this spring, because it is always so devoid of color after winter. You inspired me to pull it out and use it for sunflower cards. I love your construction of the flowers and borders on the front. Great project.

Thank you, Maggie! It can be really challenging to work with lots of different patterns. Using papers from a collection makes it so much easier. Heartfelt does a great job of creating paper collections that mix and match easily. Enjoy the hop!

Hi…this has always been a fav collection…it’s where it all started…lol Such a shame it has retired. I love what you did with the papers…I always love the surprises you give us when you show and tell inside the card or folio’s, this one is no exception. I am sure we all are thankful the sunflowers are still active, a true classic. Have a great inky day.
