G45 Communique Faux Embossed Leather Mini Album Tutorial for The Funkie Junkie Boutique

Hello, Friends!  Welcome to the latest challenge at The Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog.  I’ve created this vintage style G45 Communique Faux Embossed Leather Mini Album Tutorial for the Just My Type Challenge.  We’ll take a close look at it in a moment, bur first let’s see what our hostess, the marvelous Jenny Marples has to say about this fun challenge.

Challenge Theme: Just My Type
“As a trained touch typist I love vintage typewriters. I love the way they look and sound and the font they create. For this challenge create a vintage or shabby chic project and include a typewriter, typewriter keys, typeface.”

This  7 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ x 2 3/4″  is “made from scratch”  using 12″ x 18″ black cardstock from envelopes.com.   I had so much fun creating this faux embossed leather look using my Tim Holtz/Sizzix Botanical 3-D Texture Fade, Seth Apter Ancient Amber Baked Texture and various Distress Paints.  (Find links to the products I used below.)

This shot gives you a good idea of the amazing texture that you get when you use these amazing 3D folders.  My mixed media cover was inspired by the marvelous Jenny Marples who showed how to create rusty metal in THIS POST.  I thought that I could use a similar process to create the look of faux leather.   (If you don’t have these 3D texture fades, you can create a similar look using a process I shared HERE and in another tutorial HERE. )

G45 Communique Faux Embossed Leather Mini Album Tutorial: Picture Tour

I’m not going to go into a lot of detail here, as I’ve prepared a video tour of the project where I share lots of tips and techniques.  So we’ll just look at the still photos.

One quick note: in addition to the product links below, I also used Little Birdie Crafts Sangria Roslind Roses and 1.5″ Black Plaid Ribbon.  Some of my papers are from the original G45 Communique release way back when.  The majority are from the newer DCE release.

Black seam binding ribbon makes me think of the old carbon typewriter ribbons.

I’m becoming very fond of using stamps against a Distress Stain Background.  This Tim Holtz Inventor 1 stamp is perfect for this challenge.

I adore G45 policy envelopes.  Decorate quickly by adding chipboard and paper scraps to create the perfect spot to tuck in photos or other memorabilia.

This fussy cut image is colored with Distress Crayon.  I used Tim’s Typography Stamps and white pigment ink to add even more type elements to the design.

Y’all know how much I love interactive elements, so I’ve loaded this mini up with flaps, pockets, tags, inserts and waterfalls.

Love the Faux Leather Album. I watched your YouTube video. Thought about the page with the alphabet on top, missing the “O”. I think I will add the missing letter by dangling it from the center spot with twine.

Kathy this is another triumph! The embossed altered cover is the perfect background for these papers and don’t they work perfectly with the theme! I so enjoyed your flip through and marvel constantly at the elegance and intricacy of your designs.

Kathy, once again, you could tip me over with a feather! Your album, filled with gorgeously decorated pages makes my heart flutter, especially with the chosen theme! I could flip and turn and peek at every page all day long! (I have to come back to the video, so I can do just that!) The faux leather cover is pure icing on the delicious paper cake, and your seam binding ribbon does remind me of the old typewriter ribbon. I have a roll of that (used in my photos), but it just did not look good on the card! Your idea is creative genius,as are YOU! Hugs!

Kathy, this album is awesome. There’s something about the faux leather look that combines so well with the paper colors and and images in this Graphic 45 set. I know that I’ll be creating a variety of projects with ideas from this project. I’ll probably view the video whenever I need some inspiration…there’s so much to be found here. Don’t have this themed set but now I’ll be on the lookout for it! tfs

Gorgeous little album. Love the vintage papers and all the fabulous embellishments, especially the little charms spelling out TYPE.

Ohhhh That embossed cover is so yummy with the texture and colors! Love the image of the typist looking so stylish and sassy! Fabulous mini journal again! Each page has so many wonderful details!

Wow! This album is just out of this world, Kathy. That faux leather look on the cover is amazing, it looks so real. The amount of work you have put into this boggles my mind. Everything is so perfect in the patterned paper you have chosen to all the little pictures and embellishments. I love the totally vintage look. Every project you show us always has one little thing that reaches out and grabs me right off the bat. For this, it was the little TYPE letters on the front. So cute! Thank you again for sharing an awesome project AND for the fantastic video! Hugs

PS- the ribbon is on the spine is gorgeous and just the perfect touch!
