Rustic Sunflowers
Sunflowers and fall seem to go together, don’t they? For my inspiration piece, I’ve created a 7″ x 5″ top fold card folio featuring the Rustic Sunflowers paper pad and dies. Here’s how to create the card base.
- First, trim an 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheet of chocolate brown cardstock to measure 7″ x 10 1/2″.
- Then score the long side of the cardstock at 5″, 5 1/2″ .
- Now fold along the score lines to create a top fold card with a 1/2″ spine.
- Next, line the inside of the card with patterned papers. (See photos below.)
- Create a box style pocket from a 9″ x 3″ panel of brown cardstock. Score two 1/2″ lines on sides and two 1/2″ lines on the bottom. Trim out the corners and fold to form the pocket. Then adhere it to the base of the card interior.
Making the Rustic Sunflowers
Whenever time is short, I like to die cut the flower layers from the paper pad instead of stamping and then die cutting. Half the work is already done for you! Here’s how I finished up the Rustic Sunflowers on this card.
- First, die cut one whole sheet of the printed sunflower layers from the Rustic Sunflower paper pad.
- Then shape the petal layers in the Rustic Sunflower Shaping Mold.
- Now use a sponge dauber to brush Rusty Hinge Distress Oxide Ink lightly over the edges of the flower layers.
- Next, adhere 2 sunflower layers together, staggering the petals. Place each flower on a foam mat and press around the center of the flower.
- Now mist the finished flowers lightly with Perfect Pearls Sunflower Sparkle. (This mist is retired, but you can find new mica mists from Ranger Inks. I will link below.)
- Finally, fill the center of each sunflower with hot glue and immediately sprinkle with seed beads. Use a funnel tray to catch the beads so you don’t have a big mess to clean up.
Putting it all together
Now die cut the Elaborate Oval Frame Die twice: once from white cardstock and once from patterned paper. Adhere the two frames together to create strength. Back the center of the frame with 1/8″ foam tape
Next, cut the center from a card front and lightly distress the edges. Stamp a sentiment on the image and back it with foam tape. Then center it over the frame.
Cut and distress a 6 7/8″ x 4 7/8″ panel of patterned paper and adhere it to the card front. Then cut a 5″ x 4″ panel of the blue medallion pattern, back it with foam. Center and adhere over the first panel. Now adhere the frame in the center of the card front. Arrange your sunflowers around the base. Add brown plaid bows and burlap string bows to the corners. Embellish with Say it in Crystals swirls and little metal brads.
A Peek Inside
Here’s a peek at the inside of the card. Don’t you just love this paper collection?
The box pocket gives you the perfect place to tuck in a tea bag, chocolate, honey packet and silver spoon. Your pretty card just became a gift! When the treats have all been consumed, the pocket is a great place to store photos, recipe cards or other memorabilia.

Lovely, as usual, Kathy! I love and am inspired by the bows on each side of the card! Who knew you could do that? Haha!
This is a lovely fall card and the treats inside are a sweet gift to someone you can’t sit and have a cup of tea with. I have a particular friend who lives in another state that I always think of when I see one of your folios with a tea party inside. When we lived closer, I used to stop by and have a cup of tea with her and miss doing it now. I think she’d love to receive a card like this so I really need to create one. Thank you for making that easy to do with your step by step instructions.

Stunning card!! Lovely
This is beautiful I love the Sunflowers, great job!
Such a beautiful card to share with someone you haven’t been able to see, maybe sit and visit over a cup of the tea and reminisce, Thanks for all your talent.
Hi Kathy! Your card is gorgeous! I love fall and this fits the season so well. I am working on a fall card and will be making my sunflowers this week. Thank you for the inspiration. Love and hugs to you my friend!
Loving the vintage vibe of this project.
These are so beautiful . . . . and useful!
I really like the country vibe your card gives with the gingham ribbon. The pocket with the goodies inside was a pleasant surprise.
I always enjoy this HC Blog Hop…I know I’ll be seeing some stunning floral displays! Thanks for the written tutorial…definitely must try that blob of hot glue in flower centers followed by a layer of poured on Prills or seed beads. I’ve done a double, or even a triple layer of wet glue…hot glue adds the volume immediately…looks terrific! I do love dramatic sunflowers on a card or album front!
I really like the inside pocket idea!
Your card is really pretty Kathy. Love the colors.
Wonderful card, Kathy. In the first photo, the plaid ribbon appears black as do the brads at each corner. Then the next photo, it appears deep brown. And in the final one, the ribbon is medium brown (at least on my laptop). My point is, I adored the first version where the cardstock and ribbon bows seemed to be black. I thought you did a grungy card. LOL. And you die cut all those petals. Such detail. Amazing.
Love the sunflowers, Kathy…this card is a great way to begin Autumn. That ribbon is a must have for everything Fall. tfs-stay well.
Your card is beautiful as always. Can’t wait to get the Sunflower dies.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece of ART.
Love, love, love this my friend! The design is amazing, your sunflowers are stunning and the ribbon is perfect!
Wow, Kathy this is such a brilliant idea, I know I am going to have to make this one! x
Stunning work as always! Your cards are so rich and elaborate.
Such a pretty card! I love the pocket inside, makes a great way to sneak a little gift in to the card!
Beautiful card Fall card Kathy! Luv those gorgeous Sunflowers with those beaded centers and that plaid and jute ribbon on that Elaborate Oval die …yup …just beautiful! Thanks for sharing! Hugs, Suzy Q
Oh, Kathy, I know exactly who I’m going to make this for! It’s just perfect with the beautiful sunflowers and just the right combination of papers and ribbons! Thank you for the inspiration, my friend. Love you lots! Hugs! xoxo
This is stunning! I love your sunflowers and of course your ribbon just adds the little extra kick!
This card not only brings bright sunshine to a fall day it brings the gift of sunshine to the recipient. Very beautifully done.
Kathy, this is just stunning! What a beautiful folio you have created! And yes, sunflowers and Fall do just seem to go together! Probably why I love them so much! Your sunflowers are so beautiful! Great inspiration!
Beautiful card Kathy, put together in a lovely colour palette. Your flowers are so pretty and the centres are so perfect – lovely gift for someone!
Sunflowers are such “happy” plants, we had a garden full of them one year and now we have too many pests and they munch them out of the ground, we also have deer now too! Lovely card Kathy and stuffed with goodies!
This is such a wonderfully bright, cheery card is one of my favorite color combos. Love the mat of blue paper and I do appreciate the Heartfelt papers which let you save time!!! Talk about perfect timing I just got my first funnel tray (yippee) and I need a birthday card! Match made in heaven for me and this gorgeous card is just the ticket! I love the pockets you create and furnish with those lovely gifts for the recipient to enjoy. To pick my favorite pocket filler is hard as I love tea and chocolate. You have the best idea – give’em both. They are so delicious and make everything even better. You have created another eye-catching, delectable mouthwatering card magic event! I can see the recipient smiling ear-to-ear; I know I am even without the tea and chocolate!
