Hidden Grove Altered Embroidery Hoop Tutorial

Stamperia Hidden Grove Altered Embroidery Hoop Tutorial
Wonderful Wednesday Banner of the Month

Hello, Friends!  Are you ready for this Stamperia Hidden Grove Altered Embroidery Hoop Tutorial?  It’s Wonderful Wednesday, and time for our Banner of the Month.  I’m changing things up a bit with a large altered embroidery hoop that I think you are going to love.

How fun is this?  I began with a 10.25″ bamboo embroidery hoop and ended up with a delightful landscape filled with happy images and natural elements.  Oh, I had soooo much fun with this one.

In addition to the Hidden Grove paper, chipboard and adhesive ephemera pieces, I went digging through my box of “found items.”  What did I discover there?

  • Dried gardenia blossoms from my daughter’s garden still have a whisper of scent and a delightful papery texture.
  • Some funky acorn tops from a friend’s oak tree.  I have no idea what the name is, but they add wonderful texture to the design of this piece.
  • Look in your pantry for some mustard seeds!  I love to add these to any natural composition.  You can actually color them with alcohol ink and use them as a substitute for Prills.  My mustard seeds don’t live in my pantry; they live in my studio!
  • A tree slice from our son’s workshop made a lovely landing spot for our buddy the snail.
More Mixed Media Fun

When you watch the tutorial, you’ll learn how I used ink, stencils and texture paste to add a woodsy background to my designer paper.  It’s easier than you might think, and a good way to customize your papers.

Tips and Techniques

Here are a few simple tips and techniques to keep in mind when you are creating a landscape:

  • Paint the outside edge of chipboard and ephemera pieces with a creamy outline to make them pop.
  • Spatter the images with a bit of the same paint to add even more texture and create an aged look.
  • Find Spanish Moss in the hobby section of your craft store.  It makes a great forest floor!
  • Burlap trim on the sides and face of the hoop add another layer of texture to the composition.
  • Be sure to create a sense of dimension by adding foam tape or waste chipboard to the back of your images.
