Little Birdie Crafts Altered Wood Pallet Tutorial

Little Birdie Crafts Altered Wood Pallet Tutorial with Embossing Texture Paste & Sparkle Paste

Hello, Friends!  I’m having so much fun learning to walk in my Mixed Media Boots!  Today I have a Little Birdie Crafts Altered Wood Pallet Tutorial to share with you.  Making this project was a blast!  I got to play with some new (to me) mixed media products like Embossing Texture Paste and Sparkle Paste and stencils and of course, beautiful Little Birdie Flowers.

This 8″ x 6″ wood pallet was languishing in the clearance bin.  I picked it up to look at it and the next thing I knew, it had jumped right into my cart!  It was a real Plain Jane piece, but now it is bursting with color, texture, layers and gorgeous flowers.

Little Birdie Crafts Altered Wood Pallet: From Plain Jane to Just Plain Gorgeous

Here’s how this came together.  I also have a step out tutorial video below, so feel free to skip on down to that if you’d like.

  • First, lightly sand the surface of the pallet board to prepare it for paint.
  • Next, create a wash with Little Birdie Sand Stone and Wild Moss Paints and a few spritzes of water from a misting bottle.
  • Now, randomly brush the paint over the surface of the pallet.  Be sure to heat dry between layers and repeat as needed. Clean your brush off on a 4×4 burlap panel.  Waste not, want not!
  • Then, apply Mint Fizz Sparkle paste through a Script Stencil on the right hand side of the pallet.  Heat dry.
  • Now, apply Berry Burst Embossing Texture Paste through the Cobble Circle Stencil on the left hand side of the pallet.  Heat Dry.  Keep your heat gun moving and be patient.  The Embossing Texture paste is “cooked” when it begins to lighten in color and develop some texture.  It’s sooooo cool!
  • Now you’ve got a great foundation to build on!

Here are the next steps in the process.

  • First, fussy cut the succulent wreath from Succulent Garden 12×12 Paper Pack

TIP:   Trim around the outside of the wreath first.  Because there are so many intricate pieces, i left a little white border all the way around so that I would not accidentally ciip off any wispy bits.  Then lay the trimmed wreath on a glass mat (or the glass from an old picture frame). Use a craft knife to cut a couple of triangular pieces from the white center of the wreath.  Now you’ll be able to fit your scissor blades inside the wreath and cut it easily.

  • Next, dry brush the cut edges with any paint that’s left on your brush.
  • Then add chipboard or foam tabs to the back side of the wreath to add dimension.
  • Glue in place on the prepared burlap panel.
  • Now brush the chipboard sentiment with a wash of the same chalk paints.
  • Heat dry the chipboard, then sponge the edges with Vintage Photo Distress Ink to add shading and dimension.  Hot glue in place.
