Party Hat Slimline Birthday Card Tutorial: February 2024 Birthday Card of the Month

Hello, Friends!  How about an adorable Party Hat Slimline Birthday Card Tutorial?  What fun I had creating this vintage style card!  In fact, I like this card so much, I decided to make it our February 2024 Birthday Card of the Month.

This is another one of my “scrappy wonders” made with bits and bobs of Photoplay Hello, Lovely that were left after our “Make a Stack” video tutorial. I invited some paper pretties from Reneabouquets to the party along with a vintage ephemera photo that I’ve had in my stash for a long, long time.

Put on Your Party Dress….and Hat, too

Why make a slimline card, you may ask?  Well, the size and shape of my paper scraps had everything to do with that decision.  They were mostly all long and skinny.  So it made sense to create this 4 1/4″ x 8 1/2″ slimline card base.

You could call this card a one sheet wonder, as I only used 1 sheet of 8 1/2″ x 11″ cardstock to create the base.  Here’s how:

  • First, place the 11″ side of a sheet of cardstock on your scoring tool.
  • Now score at 4 1/4″ and 4 1/2″.
  • Then score at 8 3/4″ and 9″.

That’s all there is to it!  The 2″ flap on the far right will become a pocket once you add 1 3/4″ x 1 1/4″ gussets to the top and bottom edge.  (Score those gussets at 1/2″ and 3/4″.  You’ll see me do this in the video tutorial.

Party on the Inside

Create a party on the inside of this card by adding pockets, chocolate, gift card wallet and sweet little magnet on the inside.

With a little paper piecing, those bits and bobs of Hello, Lovely papers made an adorable birthday card, don’t you think?

Wonderful project Kathy and explaining the changes demonstrates that you can always alter a piece and keep it intact. I agree the bow had become the focal point rather than that wee sweety in her birthday hat! As usual you bring bits and pieces together to tell a story, love it.

This is the sweetest card and it’s so feminine. I love the lace and the sweet imagine is so unique. I really enjoyed this tutorial.
