Heartfelt Creations June Alumni Hop: Peacock Paisley Altered Envelope Tutorial

Hello Friends!  Welcome to the June 2107 Heartfelt Creations Alumni Hop!  You should be coming here from Amarilys’ lovely blog.  Our gorgeous summer weather drew me to play with the deep blues, bold yellows, and greens of the gorgeous Peacock Paisley Collection.  The inspiration for this Peacock Paisley Altered Envelope Tutorial occurred while I was tidying up a drawer in my studio.  I happened upon a very pretty pale green envelope and suddenly, the idea was hatched!

I had so much fun making this Peacock Paisley Altered Envelope that I thought I’d share some tips and tricks with you so that you can make one yourself.

Peacock Paisley Altered Envelope Tutorial: Creating the Delightful Daisies

Peacock Paisley Altered Envelope Tutorial by Kathy Clement Product by Heartfelt Creations Photo 2

Follow these steps to create the Delightful Daisies that will decorate the altered envelope.

  1.  First, stamp 3 sets of Delightful Daisies onto lightweight white cardstock using Fossilized Amber Distress Oxide Ink.
  2. Next, cover with clear embossing powder and heat set.
  3. Now, die cut the Delightful Daisies with the matching die.
  4. Then, use a sponge dauber to tint the leaves with Broken China Distress Ink.
  5. Next, add Fossilized Amber Distress Oxide ink to the flower center.
  6. Now shape the flowers using the Deluxe Flower Shaping Kit.
  7. Then stack the flowers together and hot glue.
  8. Next, scribble light layers of Art institute Dries Clear Adhesive into the flower centers and randomly along the petals.
  9. Now, sprinkle the glue with the glitter of your choice.  I used Stampendous Multi Crystal Mix.
  10. Tap the excess off into a scrappy tray.
  11. Finally, set the flowers aside to dry.
Peacock Paisley Altered Envelope Tutorial: Preparing the Envelope

  1. First, find a 5″ x 7″ envelope with a square flap closure.  This project would not work as well on an envelope with a pointed envelope flap.
  2. Then, ink all the envelope edges with Faded Jeans Distress Ink
  3. Next, cut a 4.75″ x 6.75″ rectangle of designer paper from the Peacock Paisley Collection.
  4. Then Ink the edges with Faded Jeans Distress Oxide Ink.
  5. Now, machine stitch around the edges.
  6. Use a distressing tool to lightly distress the edges of the panel.
  7. Center the panel on the card front, being sure to glue it below the fold.
  8. Next, Cut the border strip from the designer paper pack.
  9. Then glue it onto the front of the envelope flap being sure to place it above the fold.
  10. Now, use scissors to trim the border to fit the flap.
  11. Finally, ink the edges with Faded Jeans Distress Oxide Ink.

We’ll finish decorating the front of the envelope later.

Peacock Paisley Altered Envelope Tutorial: Preparing the Envelope Liner and back cover

Peacock Paisley Altered Envelope Tutorial by Kathy Clement Product by Heartfelt Creations Photo 4

The interior of the envelope is a great tuck spot for tags, bookmarks and/or mini folios.  You can’t use anything too terribly thick, as the envelope will split.  But, you can create a pocket outside the envelope as I did here.

  1. First, flip the envelope face down on your work surface.
  2. Next, create a template for the envelope “cover” by inserting a 6 7/8″ wide piece of plain copy paper inside the envelope.
  3. Then trace the envelope opening onto the copy paper and cut out.  This will serve as the template for the envelope cover.
  4. Place the template onto your chosen designer paper and trace the shape lightly in pencil.
  5. Now cut the shape out.  Here’s a tip: if you cut inside the traced lines, you will not have to erase any pencil marks.  And, you will also have a little border around the designer paper, which looks really nice.  Set this piece aside for the moment.
  6. Now create the envelope liner.
  7. First, select your designer paper, and measure it to 6 7/8″ wide x 7 1/4″ deep.
  8. Next, insert the designer paper face up inside the opened envelope to make sure it fits.  It should be somewhat snug.
  9. Then, glue the envelope liner in place.  It will cover the inside of the envelope as well as the inside envelope flap.
  10. Now, use your scissors to trim away any excess paper. Ink all the edges.
  11. Finally, carefully glue the envelope cover in place.  Use your scissors to trim away any excess.

Peacock Paisley Altered Envelope Tutorial:  Creating the Tag Pocket

Peacock Paisley Altered Envelope Tutorial by Kathy Clement Product by Heartfelt Creations Photo 5

I love little pockets filled with tags, so I decided to create a small tag pocket on the back side of my altered envelope.

  1. First, select a 4″ x 5″ card front from the designer paper.
  2. Then, trim the outer frame away so that the image measures approximately 4 5/8″ wide x 3.25″ tall. Ink all the edges.
  3. Next, cut a panel of navy cardstock that measures 5.25″ wide x 3.75″ tall.
  4. Mat the designer image on the navy cardstock, leaving a 1/2″ margin on both sides as well as the bottom.  Leave just a tiny margin of navy cardstock on the top edge.
  5. Then, use a scoring tool to score the sides and the bottom.
  6. Next, bevel the bottom left and right corners to form pocket flaps.
  7. Now, glue the designer image to the pocket front.
  8. Finally glue the entire pocket in place on the back of the envelope.
  9. Use the Luggage and Tags Dies to cut out tags and tickets from the cut apart page.
  10. Mat on navy cardstock.
  11. Add flowers and string bows to the tops of the tags.  Insert the tags into the pocket.

Peacock Paisley Altered Envelope: Gift Card Wallet

Now we will prepare the gift card wallet for the altered envelope.

  1.  Select an image from one of the cut apart page and mat it onto the far right hand side of  an 8.5″ long x 4 5.8″ tall strip of navy cardstock.
  2.  Now, place the long side of the navy cardstock on your scoring tool with the matted image on the right hand side.
  3.  Score just slightly to the left of the image so there is a small navy border.
  4. Crease and make a mountain fold at the score line.
  5. With the panel folded and the long side of the image against the rail, score at 3.25″.
  6. Crease and make a valley fold at this score line.
  7. This is your gift card wallet.  Line the interior and the flap.
  8. Use a circle punch to add a thumb hole, then glue just the sides to create a gift card pocket.

You can decorate the interior any way you like.  Here’s how I decorated mine.

Peacock Paisley Altered Envelope: Creating the Bookmark

Here’s how to create this double sided bookmark.

  1. First, use the largest rectangle from Cut, Mat, Create 1B die to cut out the design from a 5″ x 7″ card front.
  2. Now ink the edges and flick with water.
  3. Use a pen or computer journal the sentiment onto the panel.
  4. Mat on navy cardstock.
  5. Now, cut a second rectangle from designer paper.
  6. Stamp with the Daisy Flourish Die using Faded Jeans Distress Oxide Ink. Use a sponge dauber to add color to daisy centers.
  7. Trace Art Institute Dries Clear Glitter adhesive onto the stamped design and add glitter.  Set aside to dry.
  8. Ink the edges.  Flick with water.
  9. Add a border strip to the bottom.
  10. Mat a ticket and glue in place.
  11. Glue onto the opposite side of the navy cardstock.

Peacock Paisley Altered Envelope Tutorial: Finishing Touches

I never decorate the fronts of my cards (or in this case the altered envelope) until the very end.  This way, my flowers and designs don’t get crushed.  Now we are finally ready to add the finishing details.

  1. First, glue the border piece in place on the far left hand side of the envelope front.
  2. Next, add the matted peacock tag  as seen in the photo.
  3. Now, die cut the outer frame of the Eyelet Oval from white cardstock.
  4. Back with foam adhesive or waste chipboard to add dimension.  Glue in place.
  5. Now, use the Eyelet oval thin frame to cut the peacock image from designer paper.
  6. Back with foam adhesive or waste chipboard for extra dimension and glue in place.
  7. Hot glue prepared flowers, leaves and ribbon in place.
  8. Mat a border strip onto navy cardstock and glue in place.
  9. Add a small button.

Beyond beautiful!! Your flowers are gorgeous! but you gotta try to put a nice big pearl (it can be any color you want) in the center of your large flower, and a bit smaller one in your smaller flowers, then with a drizzle of dimensional glue around the pearl, sprinkle it with some gold micro beads and ultra fine glitter. I love doing my flowers this way they crazy pop!
Hot glue pearl in place with holes (of course) at the sides, when u add micro/seed beads & glitter the holes won’t even show!
Hope u try and like my tip!
