Summer Sunflowers Bee Themed Shaker Card: Scrap Your Stash Project
Hello, Friends! My dear husband recently asked me to identify my favorite flower. Now that is a poser, as I love flowers. But after a few minutes of thought, it came to me: Sunflowers! There’s just something about their sunny faces that lifts my heart. Naturally, this progression of thought led me to create this Summer Sunflowers Bee Themed Shaker Card. This 6″ x 6″ easel style card is one of my “Scrap Your Stash” projects. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.
Summer Sunflowers Bee Themed Shaker Card: Mix and Match
I’ve been busy doing my summer studio clean up. Overflowing scrap bins provided a real treasure trove of inspiration and materials. First, I cleaned up my cardstock scrap bin, ,where I ran across several 3″ x 5″ and 4″ x 6″ scraps of yellow cardstock in various shades. Perfect for sunflowers! Die cut some layers, do a little shaping, add some fun buttons, and voila! Just like Cinderella, these scraps are ready to party!
TIP: Inks and sprays are a great way to make different shades of cardstock blend together. Stick with colors that are in the same hue family, but some lighter, some darker. Spray or ink the finished flower with mica spray (like Perfect Pearls or Tattered Angels Or Lindy’s Gang) and you end up with a lovely bunch of lifelike looking posies.
Summer Sunflowers Bee Themed Shaker Card: Shake it Up
Die cut a doily shape, then cut out the center with a circle die to make a sunflower shaped shaker frame. Back the doily with clear cardstock that is cut with a slightly large circle die. Then add a triple layer of foam strips to the backside for a beautiful shaker frame! Fill with honey hued sequins against a backdrop of bee papers for the perfect finishing touch. This lovely bow is tied with Champagne Chevron Twill Ribbon from Really Reasonable Ribbon.
Summer Sunflowers Bee Themed Shaker Card: A Peek Inside
I’ve combined papers from my scraps of Graphic 45’s Time to Flourish August papers with Scraps from Craft Consortium’s Tell the Bees Collection. Then, just for fun, I threw in a little Prima Washi Tape from their Lavender Collection. It all works together quite nicely! And although I don’t consider myself to be a stamper, I did enjoy stamping these bee hive and bee images on a bit of scrap ivory cardstock. The lovely bumblebee is from ButterBee Scraps. (Linked below)
TIP: Create a quick and easy pocket by cutting the liner paper for the inside of your card a few inches longer than the base. Then simply score, fold and adhere to make a pocket. Dress it up with a pretty border from Time to Flourish.
Since I had enough sunflowers made, scraps cut, and all the mess was already on my desk, I went ahead and made a “twin” card. It’s almost like two cards for the time it takes to make one! Winning!
I have more “scrap your stash” projects in the works, so stay tuned. We all struggle with keeping our scraps from taking over the studio. My hope is that sharing a few ideas with you here every now and again will help you find creative ways to use up product before it takes over your world. How am I doing?
Thanks so much for stopping by!
Cheerio,
kathy

Brilliant duo of cards – that sunflower card is magnificent! And I love that you are using scraps – I’d better pay attention here because my studio is out of control! Hope your summer is going well – even though fast, I am sure! xxx Lynn
Oh, how I can relate! I love the happiness of sunflowers and the rich honey-hues of the bees. Did you ink the bee embelly? Today seems a little brighter seeing your card. Thank you, Kathy!
Another beautiful card and fabulous tips.
Kathy, I love sunflowers as well and I just love this card. You are just awesome my friend. God bless you always!!!
Sunflowers and bees go together like salt and pepper, peanut butter and jelly…a natural combination! I’ve just put our fliers to announce our August HOA meeting…sunflowers and bees! Thought I recognized that bee paper. I purchased that paper pad a few months ago and I really like it. The brand was new to me. I was surprised that the inside pages, while quite nice, didn’t match the style of the cover design. Still, I’m enjoying using the collection. You have really featured shaker cards over these last several months! Buttons give a delightfully country style…love the buttons! Thanks for instructions on using a doily to create the shaker…nice! My favorite flower is the Bearded Iris…drama, grandeur and so many color combinations! There’s enough variety out there for everyone! Love this card!
Well you have knocked it out of the park again Kathy. This is a great piece of art! I love bees and have plenty of stuff around the garden for bees. Without them, we die. Great card, loved it and all the details you put in your work!!!
A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!!
Kathy, I especially LOVE THE BEE CARD. I have a bunch of papers, stamps, etc with bee related things–you have convinced me to use them today. GREAT JOB. I LOVE BEES. All things bee…
Kathy – I love the rich, Fall colors in this card and the metal bee is perfect – love it, love it!!
Just lovely. I had my eye on that bees paper and your card made me take the leap! ( My husband thanks you again : ). It’s funny how sunflowers always remind me of fall and I’m not sure why.
Beautiful–two of my favorite things–sunflowers and bees.
Kathy, this is such a great card to hold on to these last days of summer. The sunflower and shaker combination is a great way to celebrate this sunny season. I like the way you’ve created the pocket inside the easel card. Always room to tuck a little something! tfs
Oh my! Sunflowers and black eyed Susans are my favorite flowers!!! Lol! Luv this easel card …and I believe I’ll be making this one for sure!!! Thanks for sharing your amazing talent!!! Hugs, Suzy Q
Kathy, what a beautiful Summer card! Oh how we love those bees! That gorgeous doily reminds me of a flower and the shaker elements are the pollen. We sit outside in the early morning here on the farm and watch and “listen” to the bees gathering their pollen. I love that little bee charm and how you have used those pretty buttons in the middle of your flowers. This is a very special creation. Thank you for sharing! Hugs!
So gorgeous! I love yellow and those buttons are AMAZING.
