How to Make a Shadowbox Diorama Card Folio

49 & Market-The Looking Glass-Shadowbox Diorama-Tutorial-Tea Party in a Box-Kathy Clement-Kathy by Design

Hello, Friends!  Today we’re going to venture deep into the woods and create a delightful Shadowbox Diorama Card Folio.  My favorite character from 49 & Market’s The Looking Glass Collection is the star of our show. And I think you will find him to be a very fine host, indeed!

Mr. Frog’s Woodland Home

Our adventure begins as I show you how to create this very simple 5″ x 7″ x 2″ card folio base.  It’s extra-deep because not only have I created a shadowbox scene inside, but there might just be a tea party in a box waiting for you.

The cover features our hero, Mr. Frog, out for his morning stroll in the woods.  Little does he  know that he’s under the magnifying glass of a kind and curious crafter who wants to “shake up” his day a bit.  (That would be me.  And I would never, ever hurt a frog!)

Mr. Frog’s Treasure

Mr. Frog likes to hide his treasures in plain sight.  So he’s suspended them from the branch of a friendly tree in the woods.  This may just look like a dangle charm to you, but Mr. Frog thinks these baubles to be of inestimable value.

Welcome to Mr. Frog’s World: You are cordially invited to tea!

Inside the box I’ve created a dimensional scene from Mr. Frog’s World.  When you see how easy it is to create this shadowbox insert, I think you will be thrilled!

We’ve made many a tea party in a box project together, haven’t we?  But I just couldn’t resist adding another one to this project.  It just seemed fitting.

TIP:  Create your own custom embellishments with metal charms.  First, wax the heart charm or tap with paint and wipe away the excess.  Now you can glue the bee charm to the heart for a one of a kind embellishment.

Woodland Fairy Trifold Folio Tutorial with 49 & Market The Looking Glass

Hello, Friends!  Today we’re going deep into the forest to share this Woodland Fairy Trifold Folio Tutorial with you.  Once again we are working with the delightful The Looking Glass Collection from 49 & Market.  I think you’ll find lots of great inspiration, tips, techniques and ideas tucked into this charming 4 1/2″ x 8″ folio.

Are you ready to get started?  Let’s go!

Using Ephemera to Create a Dimensional Collage Cover

Many of you have expressed to me how much you love ephemera, but you never quite know how to put it to good use.  So once we build the quick and easy folio base for this project, I’m going to show you how to use those lovely bits to create a dimensional scene on the cover of your folio.  It’s easier than you might think to create a storyteller scene, and I hope you’ll enjoy the process.

Stacks of Fun

Technically, a folio is not supposed to have pages, but I could not resist adding a stack of interactive pages inside this sweet creation.  It’s a great way to add more room to a small folio like this one.

My original intent was to create a slimline card.  But the project kind of took on a life of its own and grew into a folio.  Now we have room for pockets, photos, and journaling inside.  I truly love the way the insides of this project unfolded.

Creative Embellishments

Embellishments can either enhance or diminish a project.  Properly placed, they help tell the story and draw the onlooker into your tale.  I’ll show you how to make some clever new embellishments in the course of this video tutorial.  You can carry these ideas over to your cardmaking adventures, too.

If you’d like to learn how to create this quick and easy folio base, then take it to the next level with beautiful papers and embellishments, then I hope you’ll grab a cuppa and a snack, put your feet up and enjoy this tutorial.

You can find the basic measurements and linked supplies in the description box below the video.  I’ll also link supplies below this post for your convenience.

Personal Update”  An Unexpected Event

Today, I was supposed to have  knee replacement surgery.  However, my surgeon is unexpectedly going to be out until sometime in August.  So, my surgery has been cancelled.  Bummer!

Because the situation with my right knee has become quite uncomfortable when walking or standing, I’ve made an appointment with another highly recommended orthopedic surgeon at the end of this month.  I’m hoping to be able to have the surgery done mid-July, but I won’t really have a date until I see him.

Life sometimes takes unexpected turns, but I’ve learned over the years that God really does have my best interests at heart.  I’m at peace with the situation, and will keep you posted on updates and progress.

Wishing you a joyful and creative day, my friends!

Thanks for stopping by!

The Looking Glass Mini Album Tutorial Part 2: Simply Beautiful Interactive Pages

Hello, Friends!  Today we start part 2 of The Looking Glass Mini Album Tutorial.  If you missed Part 1, you can find it HERE.

This week’s focus is simple, beautiful interactive pages.  If you’ve ever been intimidated at the prospect of creating a mini album, this tutorial is going to help get you over that hump!  All the pages in this book (even the pop up pages!) are simple, elegant and easy to create.  Some of them will take you less than 5 minutes from start to finish.  How great is that?

I’ll also share lots of tips and ideas for using ephemera, laser cuts and chipboard elements to enhance your album.  Are you ready to get your craft on?  Let’s go!

Simple Flip Page

Simple Interactive Pages-49 & Market-The Looking Glass-Mini Album-Tutorial-Kathy Clement-Kathy by Design

It’s hard to beat a good flip page!  This one is so simple to make, but has lots of movement and interest.  The key is a simple scored flap.  Super easy to do, but makes for layers of fun.

The Fairy Hut Flip Flap Page

Do you hate to waste paper as much as I do?  While die cutting the pieces for our fairy door last week, I realized that I could repurpose them into a really fun flip flap page element.  And today I’ll show you how I did it!

Story Time Pop Up Page

Pop Up pages have to be my single most favorite element in any album or folio.  They sort of invite you into whatever story is being told and add a bit of drama to a page.  I’ll share tips for putting together a good pop up page scene, then we’ll build one together.

1, 2, 3, Pull out Page

Are you like me?  I agonize over cutting up a favorite 12×12 paper scene.  But what if you could use the whole expanse by simply creating a pull out element that adds whimsy and fun to your album?  I’ll show you how in today’s tutorial.

A Personal Update

Before I go, I want to let y’all know that I’m having total right knee replacement surgery next Wednesday.  I’m so looking forward to not living with constant pain, being able to go for a nice long walk, and not sounding like a bowl full of Rice Krispies cereal!

I’ve been working ahead, and will have our regular Wonderful Wednesday posts filled out for the next few weeks, so you won’t even know that I’m gone.  But it I take a little longer to respond to your blog or social media comments, you’ll know I’m in the recliner icing my knee!  Thanks in advance for understanding!

I hope you each enjoy a joyful and creative day today!

The Looking Glass Fairy Door Tutorial

49 & Market-The Looking Glass-Fairy Door Tutorial-Kathy Clement-Kathy by Design

49 & Market The Looking Glass Fairy Door Tutorial

Happy Wonderful Wednesday, my friends!  Our first project for June 2026 is this Looking Glass Fairy Door Tutorial.  Once again, we are giving homage to William Shakespeare’s brilliant A Midsummer’s Night Dream with a month filled with fairy themed projects.  We’ll be working with 49 & Market’s gorgeous The Looking Glass collection all month long.

I’m excited to share Part 1 of a two-part mini album series with you.  This week, I’m going to show you how to make a rustic, interactive fairy door using an arched die and simple supplies from your stash.  Are you ready to get started?  Let’s dig in!

Mr. Frog Meets the Fairies

The main character in our story book is this dapper frog, who has all kinds of lovely adventures in fairy land.  You’ll get to know him well before the series has ended.

Our base album is a canvas covered beauty that I built from scratch. (You can learn how to do that in THIS video tutorial.) But you can use any 6″ x 8″ x 2″ album in your stash and just adjust the measurements to fit.  I do provide a basic “how to” in the description box below the video on my YouTube channel.

Simple supplies like ink, paint, grit texture paste, lightweight chipboard, and a basic arch die are all you need to create the door.  This was a messy process, and figuring out how to make it work was half the fun.

Open the Door to Adventure

Create hinges for your fairy door with hardware dies and embossing powder so that you can actually open the door.  It’s a great way to set the stage for a magical fairy album, don’t you agree?

While the door is not at all difficult to make, it does require several steps.  So today’s video tutorial is a walk-through of the finished album, along with a brief word about how to create the base, tabbed spine and pages, we will only make the door together this week.  Are you ready to get started?

I hope you’ll grab a cuppa and a snack, put your feet up for a few and join me as I show you how to create this delightful fairy door.

I had such fun making this door, and I hope you enjoyed watching the process, too.

I’ll be back next week to show you how to create all the interactive pages tucked into this sweet volume.

Some supplies are tagged in the video.  Click on the tags for easy shopping.  I’ve also provided a linked supply list in the description box below the video.  And of course, there’s a linked supply list below this post.

Thanks so much for joining me, friends!

Spellbinders Landscape Rose Tutorial

Spellbinders Landscape Rose Tutorial for Christmas in July Flower of the Month

Hello, Friends!  We’re continuing out Christmas in July series with this Spellbinders Landscape Rose Tutorial.  Down here in the South we call them Knock-Out Roses, and they adorn many a front porch with their pretty green foliage and red, pink, white or cream blossoms.

49 & Market Christmas Spectacular-Spellbinders Landscape Rose-Spellbinders Flowering Quince-Kathy Clement-Kathy by Design

My friends at Spellbinders asked  me if I’d like to play with  Susan Tierney-Cockburn’s new Landscape Rose and Flowering Quince dies. How could I say no?

Do you ever make your own flowers? This is a great flower to start with because it is so easy to shape. One of the things I enjoy about making my own flowers is the ability to customize them to fit whatever project I’m making. I’ve dressed this one up in snowy attire so it will fit in with our theme for the month.

The Basics

Christmas Spectacular is probably my favorite 49 & Market collection.  Perfectly vintage images are balanced with fresh patterns and a traditional color palette.  Here are a few ways I customized the papers in this project.

  • First, paint all the edges with ivory chalk paint.  This creates the feeling of snow and winter.
  • Next, thin out that same paint and spatter the card front.  It looks like falling snow!
  • Now, tear the paper edges instead of cutting them with a paper trimmer.  This lends a wonderful vintage/aged feel to the card design.
  • Finally, create lots of depth and dimension by adding foam tabs behind the chipboard and ephemera bits.
  • Torn petals?  No worries!  Learn how to fix the issue in today’s tutorial.
A Peek Inside

The inside of the card is simple: A panel with room to add a personal greeting and a little pocket.

Tuck a bookmark, tea wallet and honey stick into the pocket to turn your card into a gift.  The tassel topper on the card is made with all kinds of string, twine and crochet thread from my stash.
