Victorian Style Valentine Banner Tutorial with G45 Time to Flourish and Reneabouquets

Hello, Friends!  For this week’s Throwback Thursday, I’m sharing this Victorian Style Valentine Banner Tutorial.  Several of you requested a “banner of the month” post for 2023, and I cannot think of anything that would be more fun!  We’ll kick this through the year series off with a dreamy, romantic banner made with Graphic 45’s Time to Flourish February papers and loads of goodies from Reneabouquets.

Here’s a look at this big, beautiful banner hanging from the chalk board in my kitchen.  The 7 pennants are stitched onto netting, and measure over 4 feet in length: a perfect size to display on a mantel or even a bookcase.

Banners are loads of fun to make, but man, are they ever difficult to photograph!  It’s hard to really see the details unless you photograph in segments.  So that is what I did!

Romantic Victorian Details

Putting the banner together is a step by step process.  Like most things in life, it seems complicated unless you break it down into manageable segments.

  • First, cover 4 Graphic 45 Ivory ATC tags with red cardstock.  Use the G45 ATC die, and this only takes a minute.
  • Next, cut another set of ATC tags using Time to Flourish February papers.  Fold each tag in half and trim about 1/8″ off around the edges to create a pretty layered effect.
  • Use paper clips or binder clips to attach the ATC tags to the netting ribbon.  Then stitch them onto the netting. Add the details to the tags after you’ve stitched the banner together.

The 3 large pennants are die cut with Eileen Hull’s House/Pocket Stitchlets Dies.

  • First, Die cut the red cardstock background using only the outer frame.
  • Next, center the inner die inside the frame.  Use a little tape (I like Post-It’s Notes Tape) to hold the inner die in place.  Then cut 3 pennants from patterned paper.
  • Now place the patterned paper pennants on your cutting tool.  Line the blade of your tool up so that it is in the center of the small die cut circles.  Trim so that you have a postage stamp edge on the patterned paper.
  • Then place a small piece of double sided adhesive on the back of the patterned paper so that it will stay in place on red canvas ticking fabric while you stitch the layers together.
  • Adhere the stitched pennant to the red pennant and clip onto the netting ribbon.  You will have an ATC tag, then a large pennant, then an ATC tag, etc.

TIP: Dry brush the edges and lightly spatter the printed Beautiful Board with ivory chalk paint to lend a more vintage finish.

Love is in the Air!

Assemble the two interior ATC tags the same way as before.  Decorate them with a heat embossed chipboard heart and postage stamps.

TIP: Assemble the individual pennants, then stitch onto the netting.  Now it is time to add the lace trim at the top of the stitched banner.  After that, you can decorate each pennant.  Then add the bows and flower clusters to the ends of the banner.  Finish with flowers.

I’m in Love: I’m All Shook Up

The center pennant is the star of the show with a frilly shaker heart as the focal image.  Here’s how to achieve this effect.

  • First, heat emboss a large heart frame with Stampendous Shabby Pink Embossing Enamel.
  • Now use Dries Clear Adhesive to adhere clear cardstock (acetate sheets) to the back of the embossed frame.  When the glue is dry, trim out the heart.
  • While the glue is drying, ink up a nice pile of heart shaped Beautiful Bits with Picked Raspberry, Worn Lipstick, and Spun Sugar Distress Ink.
  • Inking TIP:  I put the hearts in a small plastic bag and dropped a few drops of re-inker into the bag.  Then I squished the beautiful bits around until they were covered.  Easy peasy!
  • Next, add 3 rows of 1/8″ foam strips to the back of the heart frame.
  • Then cut out a 4 1/4″ x 4 1/4″ panel from the Time to Flourish cut apart page.  Place your inked beautiful bits, sequins, beads and buttons on the 4 1/4″ square of paper.  Then center the heart frame and press in place.
  • Adhere the heat embossed LOVE sentiment on the cover of the frame.
  • Place foam adhesive on the back of the Valentine Fairy and butterfly.
More Details

Because the gorgeous lace trim is difficult to machine stitch, I simply hot glued it to the top of the banner.

Cosy Winter Rustic Christmas Banner for the Really Reasonable Ribbon November 2021 Blog Hop

Hello, Friends!  This Cosy Winter Rustic Christmas Banner is my inspiration piece for the Really Reasonable Ribbon November 2021 Blog Hop.  You should be coming here from Ginny’s beautiful blog.   Today we’re celebrating the lovely Vintage Christmas Ribbon Club Assortment.

This might just be my favorite Christmas Ribbon Club Assortment ever!  Just look at those darling little snowy house, cheery cardinals, nostalgic plaid and elegant script ribbons!  The neutral, softer color palette made this ribbon a perfect playmate for my Cosy Winter paper collection.

Banner Day!

Banners and Christmas just seem to go together, don’t they?  And this one is so easy to make!

First, stitch P13 Garland Tags onto squares of designer paper. Then machine stitch   Sherry Taffeta Ribbon behind each pennant, and  Winter Neighborhood Satin on the top side.

Next, decorate between each pennant with vintage buttons and Tan Delicate Stitched Satin ribbon, Then add some rusty snowflakes and mini jingle bells to amp up the vintage vibe.

Now look through your stash of winter embellishments.  You’ll be sure to find some special goodies to dress up your banner.

Add just the right rustic touch with little burlap string bows.

Now finish the corners with festive bow clusters.  Vintage Christmas Plaid Ribbon pairs nicely with burlap string bows.  Bright poinsettias and white bead/berry clusters add extra cheer.

Apple Season Banner for Really Reasonable Ribbon

Hello, Friends!  This vintage style Apple Season Banner makes me think of my mom.  Her birthday was in September, and every year we trekked off to a nearby apple orchard to celebrate her birthday.  We picnicked under the apple trees surrounded by the sweet perfume of ripe apples.  Lazy bumblebees provided the background music and a crystal blue sky was the canopy over our heads.  Nothing compares to that first intoxicating bite into an apple picked from a northern orchard.  First you hear the crunch as your teeth break through the skin.  Then the juice runs down your chin and up your forearm as the sweet/tart flesh fills your mouth.  Mmmm…let’s go apple picking!

Shades of Red, Ivory and Rust

Each pennant on this banner is machine stitched onto Rust Silky Crush and Sherry and Ivory Plaid Ribbons.  Ivory Crochet Lace Trim adds just the right touch of vintage goodness.  And burlap string brings in the rustic feel of fallen leaves.  It’s such a pretty combination!

Alternate die cut pennants with Graphic 45 Kraft Regular tags to create a lot of visual interest.  Then die cut Tim Holtz Skeleton Leaves from scraps of burgundy and green papers to mimic autumn leaves.

I really had to dig deep  into the Closet of Inspiration and Delight to find this combination of Authentique Autumn Collection and the September Calendar Collection. (Both are retired, but if you do a Google search, you can still find bits and pieces out there.  I will link below.)

Even the flowers are retired Petaloo blossoms.  But they were the perfect color match for the papers, so I had to use them!

Throwback Thursday Saint Patrick’s Day Banner

Hello, Friends!  I’m a bit late sharing this Throwback Thursday Saint Patrick’s Day Banner with you all.  But maybe you’ll still find time to get one made before the day comes and goes!   This Throwback Thursday banner features Authentique Paper’s lovely Clover collection.  If you don’t have this discontinued collection, you could substitute the March Calendar Collection and be just fine. It comes together very quickly thanks to a handy dandy die and G45 Ivory Tags from my stash.

TIP:  Create an interesting banner by alternating the shape of the pennants.  This banner uses G45 Ivory Regular Tags and Eileen Hull’s Sizzix House/Banner Stitchlet Dies.

Let’s take a look at each individual pennant in this cheery banner.

The Wearin’ of the Green

Begin by die cutting patterned paper to fit the Graphic 45 tags.  Add machine stitching around the edges, if desired.

Next, die cut the the pointed pennant with the Sizzix die.  You will need to do this once using the frame only with plain cardstock (I used Authentique Spectrum). Then die cut it a second time with the perforated insert centered inside.  Use your patterned paper this time.  Now put the patterned paper in your cutter and trim away the edges.  Use the center of the perforated holes in the die as a guideline.

Tips and Tricks

  • Machine stitch a lace border to the top of the banner.  I actually stitch twice: once across the top edge, and a second time along the bottom.  This makes the banner lie nice and flat when it is hanging.
  • Add a lace doily layer to separate the background paper from the main image.
  • Adhere buttons and small bows between each pennant.

  • Stitch the center of shamrock buttons and adhere over the printed image for extra dimension.
  • Back an image with foam tape, bits of chipboard, or other dimensionals to help it stand out.

  • Fussy cut images from 3×4 cards to create lovely layers. Back each layer with dimensionals to help it stand out from the others.
  • Add bows and floral clusters to each end of the banner to finish.

I hope I’ve shared some tips, tricks and ideas to help you create your own Saint Patrick’s Day banner.  If you are not big on St. Pat’s day, why not use a pretty spring paper collection instead?  Banners are such a cheery addition to our home décor.   And, if you are like me, they are a satisfying way to play with pretty papers!

Authentique Magical Christmas Banner with Eileen Hull House Stitchlets Die

Hello, Friends!  Today I have an Authentique Magical Christmas Banner to share with you.  Even though I know that Jesus is the reason for the season, Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without Santa!  Remember the anticipation of waiting for Santa to arrive on Christmas Eve?  Did you listen for reindeer hooves on the rooftop like I did?  These jolly Christmas Santa images take me right back to my childhood!

The pennants for this banner are die cut with Eileen Hull’s House/Banner Stitchlets die and some tags that I had in my stash.

TIP:  Mix and match pennant shapes for a more interesting design.

TIP:  Combine images from the 6×6 Paper Bundle with patterns from the 12×12 Collection Kit.  Then toss in some texture with ribbon, burlap and felt embellishments.

TIP: Fussy cut around the Santa images from the 3×4 cards.  Then pop them up with foam tape to create lots of dimension.

TIP:  Tie ribbon streamers between the pennants.  Then top with holly berry clusters to add a little extra cheer.

TIP: Fold 1 1/2″ wide cotton ribbon in half, then machine stitch the pennants between the layers.  This makes for a finished edge and a banner that will not fall apart.

TIP: Make the first and last banners in a mirror image of one another.  Then tuck in rusty jingle bells, bows and red flowers to make the banner really festive.

I hope this Magical Christmas Banner gives you some tips and ideas that you can use to decorate your home this holiday season.  A banner like this also makes a great gift!
