Blazing Poppy Jumbo Tag Tutorial

Heartfelt Creations Wednesday: Jumbo Poppy Tag Tutorial

Happy Heartfelt Creations Wednesday, my friends!  We’re taking another look at the beautiful Blazing Poppy release from Heartfelt Creations.  This time, I have a Blazing Poppy Jumbo Tag Tutorial to share with you.  I think you are going to like it!

Kathy by Design/Blazing Poppy Jumbo Tag TutorialI had a little fun playing with embossing powder on this tag.  I used a Ranger Jumbo Black tag as my base.  The Poppy Border and Filler stamps were done in white pigment ink, then heat embossed with superfine white embossing powder.  Then, I stitched the black tag to a red cardstock base.    Blazing Poppy Jumbo Tag 02aHere,  I used Scattered Straw Distress Embossing Powder to stamp my poppies onto the same red cardstock.  I love the contrast of that yellow embossing powder against the red cardstock!  The centers were filled with Prima flower centers and Black Soot Distress Stickles.  For my foliage, I used the classic leaf stamp and die.

Blazing Poppy Jumbo Tag 03

Here’s a  closeup so you can see all the wonderful texture and detail of these gorgeous flowers!

Blazing Poppy Jumbo Tag 02bBut we’re not done having fun with embossing powder yet!  I stamped and die cut 2 of the beautiful Botanical Wings butterflies.  One, from cardstock and one from clear cardstock.  The beautiful black poppies were stamped onto black cardstock and heat embossed with more of the Scattered Straw Distress Ink.  I folded some of the smaller petal layers and tucked them behind my focal sentiment to add extra depth and dimension.

Blazing Poppy Jumbo Tag 02I have a complete supply list and step by step tutorial below so that you can make your own tag if you’d like.  These flowers are stunning, whether you go soft and pastel as I did last week, or you go bold and fiery like this week’s project.  Have fun playing with Blazing Poppies!

I’m entering this tag in the following challenges:

Use white pigment ink to stamp the Poppy Border at the base of the black tag. Stamp the baby’s breath from Poppy Fillers onto the remainder of the tag. Heat emboss with Bridal Embossing Powder. Mat with Poppy Parade Cardstock and sew along the edges.

Stamp two sets of Poppy Petals onto Poppy Parade Cardstock using Versamark Ink. Stamp an additional set onto black cardstock. Heat emboss with Scattered Straw Distress ink. Die cut with the Blazing Poppy Die. Shape with the Deluxe Tool Kit. Spritz the Poppy Parade poppies with Oriental Poppy Glimmer Mist. Paint the black poppy layers with Roses R Red Glimmer Glam. Set the largest layer of the black poppy aside. Stack the remaining flower layers and fill centers with beads or Prima flower centers.

Die cut the Decorative Oval Die from Poppy Parade Cardstock. Glue onto the top third of the tag base.

Stamp the Classic Open Leaf onto white cardstock using Peeled Paint Distress ink. Die cut with the Classic Leaf Die. Sponge with Moss Green Metallic Stamp Paint. Cut into 3 sections.

Fussy cut “You are One in a Million” from the paper collection. Ink with Versamark and heat emboss with UTEE. When cooled, crack slightly. Place foam dots in the center and attach to the center of the Decorative Oval Die.

Stamp two large butterflies from Botanical Wings onto designer paper using Peacock Feathers Distress Ink. Heat emboss with Bridal EP. Die cut and spritz very lightly with Oriental Poppy. Shape the wings and glue the two bodies together to form a dimensional butterfly. Glue onto card base as shown. Add Black Soot Stickles to the Butterfly Body and Diamond
Stickles to the butterfly wings.

Tuck a small piece of the Classic Leaf behind it. Arrange the other flowers and leaves on the tag as shown.

Dye the seam binding by spritzing it with Oriental Poppy Glimmer Mist. Scrunch together and let dry, or dry carefully with a heat gun. Smoosh Peacock Feathers Distress Ink onto a non porous surface and spritz with water. Randomly tap the seam binding into the puddle, scrunch and dry. Use to create the top streamers and bow on the tag.

Kathy by Design/Blazing Poppies Mixed Media Layout 01a

See?  I told you it was glorious!  This is our precious grand girl, Julia Claire.  I found this photo of her on my desk recently, and knew I had to use it in a mixed media layout. You can find a complete supply list and step by step directions below, but for now, let’s take a look at the details.

Blazing Poppies Mixed Media Layout 03aBefore I layered my papers together, I created a pocket where I could insert the photo, then lined it with the decorative lace border die.

Blazing Poppies Mixed Media Layout 04aI used various hues of pink to keep the composition unified, then added pops of green and black for contrast.

Blazing Poppies Mixed Media Layout 05a

The poppies were stamped, embossed, die cut, sponged, painted, and coated with crackle medium.  Then the centers were filled with beads to resemble poppy seeds.

Blazing Poppies Mixed Media Layout 06I painted my wooden embellishments and then tapped them with Picket Fence Distress Stain.  I love how this softens them and helps them blend into the composition.  The paper collection, as always, is loaded to the gills with wonderful artwork like this sentiment ticket.

Blazing Poppies Mixed Media Layout 07

My chipboard letters were painted, then embossed with clear powder, then tapped with Picket Fence.  It’s always good to add a touch of black to a layout like this.  I think it helps to anchor the piece.

Blazing Poppies Mixed Media Layout 02aI added lots of distressing, inking, stenciling, sponging, stamping and painting to the background.  And I chose the title, because this sweet little munchkin really does make me happy!

Be sure to visit the Heartfelt Creations BLOG for even more inspiration and links to the rest of the design team.  You’ll find my Blazing Poppies Mixed Media Layout Tutorial below.

I’m sharing this with my friends over at the Word Art Wednesday Challenge page.

Directions:
Measure down 4.5″ from the top center of the designer paper. Make a small pencil mark. Measure 3″ to both the left and the right of this mark. Use a ruler and a craft knife to cut a 6″ long slit in the paper. Measure 4.5″ down from the center of this slit and make a small pencil mark. Use a ruler and a craft knife to cut a straight slit along this line. Use your pencil to roll the left and right hand sides of this slit back like a scroll. Die cut the Decorative Lace Border die from white cardstock. Cut in half from top to bottom. Glue each half onto the back side of the slit opening and glue to the designer paper as seen in the photo. Cut 2 of the largest Layered Elegant Swirls from white cardstock and glue onto the horizontal slit, as shown in the photo. Cut the black 6″ x 6″ square from the designer paper. Randomly add texture paste with the honeycomb stencil. Let it dry, paint with Picket Fence Crackle Paint and then when dry, sponge with Pumice Stone Distress Ink. Glue behind the cut opening so that it shows through, as seen in the photo.

Stamp several sets of the Blazing Poppy Petals onto the various shades of pink cardstock using both Strawberry Slush and Rose Red SU Ink. Sprinkle with Clear Embossing Powder and heat set. Die cut with the Blazing Poppy Die. Lightly sponge the centers with Black Soot Distress Ink. Shape with the Deluxe Tool Kit. Spray with TA Silk Glimmer Mist. Glue layers together to form large, medium and small flowers. I used a total of 7 flowers for this layout. Fill the centers with beads, brush with Picket Fence Crackle Paint and set aside to dry. When dry, brush again with Clear Crackle Paint. Let dry.

Use London Fog ink to stamp the Poppy Corner into the lower right hand corner of the page. Ink the edges of the paper with Worn Lipstick Distress Stain. Distress the edges heavily. Glue onto a 12″ x 12″ sheet of Rose Red Cardstock. Use the flourish mask and Pumice Stone Distress Ink to add details to the designer paper. Randomly add texture paste with the honeycomb stencil. Let dry, Paint with Picket Fence Crackle Paint. Let dry. Stamp the page randomly with the Elegant Word Background and London Fog Ink. Spritz and spatter the entire page with Silk Glimmer Mist.

Wad up some scrap paper and glue to the back of your photo, then glue the photo into the slit you created earlier, as shown. Glue the prepared flowers around the opening, as shown. Paint the bird cage with Picked Raspberries Distress Stain and Clear Crackle Paint. When dry, glue in place. Paint the words “HAPPY” with the Black Soot Distress Paint. When dry, paint with Clear Crackle Paint and glue onto the layout, as shown. Paint the berries with Picked Raspberry Distress Stain and sponge the leaves with Moss Green Metallic Paint. Tap very lightly with Picket Fence Distress Paint. Add Dries Clear Glue randomly to the berries and dip into the mixed lilac Czech beads. Add to layout as shown. Use the Luggage and Tags Die to cut the ticket and tab from the paper collection. Add to layout as shown.
