#G45Gentleman Challenge: Master Detective Bendi Card

#G45Gentleman Challenge: The Game is Afoot with Master Detective!

Hello, G45’ers!   Today’s post is all about the fun #G45Gentleman Challenge at Graphic 45.  As you can probably guess, the challenge is to create a masculine project using Graphic 45 papers.  I got inspired by this fun challenge theme…and the new Master Detective Collection and set about making this deliciously diabolical Master Detective Bendi Card.

#G45Gentleman Challenge The Game is Afoot Bendi Card Master Detective by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 1

The Game is Afoot!

Our family has always been a game-playing family.  From the time they were little, our 5 kids loved nothing better than spending an afternoon or evening rolling dice, spinning spinners, and moving game pieces around a board.  We played countless games of Clue, and hosted more than one Murder Mystery Dinner.  So this collection really spoke to memories of happy family times.  To this day, whenever we get together, the boxes come out of the closet and as Sherlock Holmes says, “The game is afoot!”

#G45Gentleman Challenge The Game is Afoot Bendi Card Master Detective by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 2This collection is just pure fun, so I had to create an extra special fun project with it.  Bendi cards provide lots of opportunites to add layers of dimension to a card.

TIP:
  • Back fussy cut images with foam dimensionals or waste chipboard to lift them from the card base.  I get lots of packages sent to me in Priority Mail boxes.  Instead of throwing them in the recycle bin, I cut them up and use them instead of costly foam dimensionals.

Here’s the “view from the top” so you can get a good look at all the yummy layers in this whimsical card.

Sinister Secrets and Dastardly Deeds: Create a Secret Pocket

#G45Gentleman Challenge The Game is Afoot Bendi Card Master Detective by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 4

You can create a secret pocket in many different ways.  For this project, I fussy cut a border from the 12×12 paper collection.  Then, I cut a narrow strip of cardboard and glued it along the base of the strip.  Next, I added 1/8″ Scor-Tape to the base of the cardboard and glued it to the base of the Master Detective Bendi Card.

Now, what did I put in the pocket?

#G45Gentleman Challenge The Game is Afoot Bendi Card Master Detective by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 5

This little gift card folio!  I simply matted the image on a strip 8.5″ long cardstock that was slightly taller than the image.  After gluing the image to the right hand side of the strip, I scored a line to the left and folded.

#G45Gentleman Challenge The Game is Afoot Bendi Card Master Detective by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 6

Next I trimmed down a Master Detective ephemera card, and glued it inside.  This gives you room to write a personal message and a great spot to tuck in a gift card!

Cobwebbed Cabinets and Skeleton Keys

#G45Gentleman Challenge The Game is Afoot Bendi Card Master Detective by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 7

One of the elements that makes this card so much fun is the staggered layers.  I  knew I wanted to add some height to one side of the card, so I fussy cut the cobwebbed bookshelf from the 12×12 page.  To create even more dimension, you can separate the layers.  I actually made three separate tiers, each backed with cardboard to make this curio cabinet pop off the page.

TIP:
  • If you look closely at the top tier of the cabinet, you’ll see that the base of the top tier is folded to create even more dimension.  To do this, I glued two strips of cardboard, one on top of the other, to the center of the base moulding.  Then I glued the cardboard to the top of the curio cabinet.  Once the glue had set, I came back and folded the sides down and glued them to the paper.  It gives the top tier of the cabinet a very realistic look.
Elementary, My Dear Watson: Handmade Rosettes

Circle elements always add a playful feel to a project.  To incorporate them here, I made some rosettes.

TIP:
  • No rosette die?  No worries!  I made these rosettes with the border strips from the 12×12 collection.  Cut the borders to different widths, then score on the 12″ side every 1/4″.  Accordion fold along the score lines.  Glue the ends together, then clip with a small binder clip until the glue dries.  Place a dime sized puddle of hot glue onto a non stick craft mat.  Open the rosette and press the center down into the glue puddle, bringing all the center edges together.  Hold in place for a few seconds, then top with a chipboard button or game piece from the Master Detective Decorative Chipboard.
Master Detective Tags & Pockets

#G45Gentleman Challenge The Game is Afoot Bendi Card Master Detective by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 9

This pocket provides another fun little hiding spot for tags and treats.  Skeleton keys, skeleton hands, a spider webbed monocle and spider charm add even more mystery to the design.

Stars and Stripes Forever Independence Day Decor

Stars and Stripes Forever Independence Day Decor with Authentique “Heroic”

Hello, Friends!  It’s officially summer and that means the 4th of July is right around the corner.  If you are hosting a cookout celebration, you might want to start thinking about a little Independence Day decor.  With that in mind, I dipped into the gorgeous new “Heroic” collection from Authentique papers and put together some fancy fold cards that can double as home decor.

The great thing about fancy fold cards is that they are a a natural for home decor.  Because I wanted the option to use this card as home decor, I made the base to measure 7″ long x 5″ tall.  (You can find the YouTube video tutorial for this card base HERE.)

Die cut stitched stars make me think of 4th of July fireworks and add a great sense of motion to this card.  I’ve used 12×12 Details stickers from the Heroic Collection to add extra detail.  The blue stars are cut from foil paper for a little extra shimmer.

Wouldn’t this make a great table centerpiece on your Independence day table?

The vintage patriotic gal on this large panel on the right is not just another pretty face.

Red White and Blue Through and Through Step Out Card Heroic by Kathy Clement Product by Authentique Photo 5If you untie the Navy Blue Stars Grosgrain ribbon, you’ll discover that it’s a gift card wallet.  This would make a great host or hostess gift for July 4th cookouts or a great birthday present for those lucky 4th of July babies.

Stars and Stripes Center Step Card

This dynamic star studded step out card would also look great on a 4th of July table.  I used a Cheery Lynn die to cut the card base from kraft cardstock, then decorated it with an assortment of 12×12 and 6×6 Heroic papers.

Red, white and blue Petaloo flowers anchor the left hand corner of the card along with a multi-layered patriotic star.  Double mat the ticket stickers to give them more presence on the card.

And, the card folds flat for storage, or for mailing.

I love to celebrate the 4th with our family.  We have a long standing tradition of enjoying a meal of chili dogs, potato salad, and coleslaw. The grand finale to the picnic is homemade brownies and ice cream.  Honestly, is there anything more fun than watching the sky come alive at night with brilliant fireworks?  I can hardly wait!

I hope I’ve shared some ideas, tips and tricks with you today that you can use in your own crafty adventures.  If so, I’d love to hear from you in the comment section below.

Fun with Graphic 45: Fancy Fold Cards Video Tutorial & First 2017-2018 Brand Ambassador Post

Hello, G-45’ers!  Welcome to my first official post as a Graphic 45 2017-2018 Brand Ambassador. I think all the card makers out there are really going to enjoy today’s post as it is all about cards! Today I have 3 different styles of fancy fold cards to share with you, all using fabulous papers from Graphic 45.  I’ve prepared a fun Fancy Fold Cards Video Tutorial for you, so you can follow along at home and learn how to make these clever interactive cards.

Graphic 45 has lots of exciting plans and big changes in store for the 2017-2018 term, and I’m just thrilled to bits to be designing for this wonderful company for a second year.  One of the changes made is that the design team is now called Graphic 45 Brand Ambassadors.    I have had a little preview of the fun things coming your way, and I can honestly say I think this is going to be the best year ever for lovers of the Graphic 45 Brand.

A Little Bit About Me

Before I dig into the fancy fold cards video tutorial, G45 asked that we share a few fun facts about ourselves to kick things off.  Many of you have been following me for a long time now, so feel free to skip on down to the “meat” of this post.  But for new followers, here are some things you might like to know about me.

I live in beautiful North Carolina, USA, with Dale, my darling husband of 40+ years. We had theprivilege of raising 5 fun and fabulous children. Now we have the immense pleasure of beinggrandparents to three precious girls whom we call “The Littles.”.

Most days you’ll find me in my sunny little studio making cards, dabbling in mixed media, designing mini albums, folios, paper pretties for my ETSY shop and enjoying all the many adventures that the fabulous world of creativity affords. I also love to bake, spendtime with “the Littles”, cook big meals for our family, walk on the beach, go junkin’ and read.

Although I have a passion for all kinds of crafty adventures, I have no formal art training.  Cards are my favorite thing to create.  I especially enjoy creating interactive cards and put as much work into the insides of my cards as I do the outside. Adding tags and pockets, sweet little treats like tea bags or chocolates and surprise panels in a card really gets me excited.

I like to stay up to date with what’s going on in the crafting world.  Color, pattern and design fascinate me, so I try to pay attention while reading magazines or even looking around in stores to see what colors and patterns seem to be trending.  Is there a new technique?  I want to learn it and I enjoy taking online classes when time permits.

For our first Brand Ambassador Challenge, Graphic 45 asked us to research trends in paper crafting and find a technique or trend that interested us.  The next step was to prepare a project that represented that trend and share it with you.  And that, my friends, is how this Fancy Fold Cards Video Tutorial came into being.

Card Making Trend Alert: Fancy Fold Cards are Where It’s At

In preparing for this post, I learned that in the world of cards, there are several trends that excite me.  Fancy fold cards, shaker cards and pop up cards are getting a lot of attention right now. Adding buttons to cards is also making a comeback.  And metallic elements are hugely popular.   I decided to take some time to learn a few new fancy fold cards to share with you here today.  I’ve incorporated some of these other fun trends in the designs.  There are lots of photos, tips and information to follow, so you might want to go grab a cuppa and a snack to sustain you.

Fancy Fold Card  #1: Bathing Beauties Double Gatefold Card with Place in Time July Papers

Bathing Beauties Double Gatefold Card Tutorial, Place in Time, by Kathy Clement, Photo 1

One of the great things about fancy fold cards is that they really bring the WOW factor to any project.  The other great thing is that they really are fairly simple to make.  They look impressive and complicated, but I’ll show you in today’s video tutorial just how simple it is to add that WOW factor to your next card making session.

Bathing Beauties Double Gatefold Card Tutorial Place in Time by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 2

This Double Gatefold Card started with 2 simple 5” x 7” side fold card bases.  I overlapped the cards, added a couple of extra score lines, and voila!  Double Gatefold card magic!

A belly band holds this Double Gatefold card shut, but you could also use ribbons to tie the gates closed.

And when you’ve slipped the belly band off the card, it’s just like watching the curtain rise at the theater.

As each panel of the card opens, there are more and more goodies to look at.  Finally, the postcard pocket in the middle pane takes center stage.

The July images and prints from A Place in Time work really well with By the Sea.  I’ve added some journal cards from that collection to finish the inside of my card.  The vintage postcard from A Place in Time makes a great pocket, too.

Tips and Tricks for Making Double Gatefold Cards

Tip:  Always remember to use your bone folder to burnish the score lines on a Fancy Fold card.  Crisp fold lines are essential when you are making a card with special folds.

Tip: To create a quick and easy pocket, use a postcard!  Just glue the sides and bottom edge to your card base and then slip in ephemera cards, journal cards, tags or other goodies. Everyone loves surprises!

Step-out cards are just loaded with dimension.  They also provide you with lots of nooks and crannies to decorate with pretty papers like the patterns and images in By the Sea.

One great thing about Step-Out cards is the fact that they fold flat for mailing

Then you can pop it open for display.  How fun is that?

Tips and Tricks for making Step Out Cards

Tip:  Be careful when gluing images to your card front.  You don’t want to get glue on the back layers of the card, or it won’t open properly.  To prevent this from happening, turn your chipboard piece upside down on the card front and make pencil marks so you’ll know where to place the glue.

Tip: I used a craft knife and ruler to create the center slit that allows the step out mechanism to work. When using a craft knife, there are 2 important things to remember.  First, always test your blade to make sure it is sharp.  A dull blade will not cut cleanly.  Second, I find that if I cut my paper on a glass surface, the knife glides through the paper like a hot knife goes through butter.  You can use the glass from an old picture frame, or a glass cutting mat like the one I use in the video tutorial.

Tip: To add realistic beach effects to this card, I scribbled on the card base with Art Institute Dries Clear Adhesive then sprinkled with real beach sand.  Do this over a sheet of paper, so you can tap off the excess sand once the glue dries.

Fancy Fold Card #3: Portrait of a Lady Fanfare Card/Folio

Fanfare Card Tutorial Portrait of a Lady by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 1

This is probably my favorite fancy fold card design because it is part card, part folio, part pop-up.   It looks like a really complicated and fussy design, but the truth is, It’s all just straight lines!   Isn’t that a relief?

Fanfare Card Tutorial Portrait of a Lady by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 2

Begin with a standard 6” square top fol card base made from heavy cardstock.  Because of the weight of the fanfare fold, you need a really sturdy base to work with.

The front cover of the Fanfare Fold card opens to reveal a beautiful hidden folio.

I decorated this panel with a pretty pocket and tag combo, then topped it with this gorgeous chipboard element to add even more dimension to the design.

Tips and Tricks for Making Fanfare Fold Cards

Tip:  Cut sentiments from a collection’s text pages for picture perfect color matches.  I snipped the word “Beauty” from the 8×8 “Grace” paper then glued it behind the G45 Staples Ornate Label Holder.

Tip: Use a scallop corner punch to create the pretty shaped edges on this card.

But Wait….there’s more!

This lovely design also opens like a standard top fold card. Decorate the inside of your Fanfare Fancy Fold Card with decorative papers, journal cards and sticker elements. This is a great style of card to present for weddings, bridal showers, baby showers or birthdays, as photos from the event can be stored in the folio.  It’s like getting a card and a gift in one neat package.

Enjoy the Little Things Gift Card Holder

Enjoy the Little Things in Life Gift Card Holder with G45 Cafe Parisian and RRR

Hello, Ribbon Lovers!  I am a fan of little things.  Itty bitty babies, teeny tiny desserts, ladybugs, delicate blossoms, miniature books…all things small delight me.  So when it came time to create a very special birthday card and gift card holder for one of our dear daughters-in-law, I went small and made this Enjoy the Little Things in Life Gift Card Holder.

Enjoy the Little Things in Life Gift Card Holder Cafe Parisian by Kathy Clement for Really Reasonable Ribbon Product by Graphic 45 Photo 1

I’ve had this 3″ x 4.25″ matchbox stashed away for quite some time, just waiting for inspiration to strike.  First, I covered it with some Graphic 45 Cafe Parisian Patterns and Solids paper.  Then I created this easel style topper for the box.

Enjoy the Little Things in Life Gift Card Holder Cafe Parisian by Kathy Clement for Really Reasonable Ribbon Product by Graphic 45 Photo 2

The focal image is an ephemera card from the collection which just so happens to be the perfect fit for the matchbox.  To dress it up even more, I added a pretty Salmon Pink Seam Binding Bow and some gorgeous Petaloo blossoms in coral and white.  (If you’ve had a hard time color matching ribbon to this collection, this ribbon is spot on!)

Enjoy the Little Things in Life Gift Card Holder Cafe Parisian by Kathy Clement for Really Reasonable Ribbon Product by Graphic 45 Photo 3The easel top opens to reveal a little gift pocket that is just the right size for a gift card.

The inside has a belly band that is just the right size for an individually wrapped Ghiradelli chocolate.  Then I fussy cut a small image to create a tuck spot for my hand written note.

This Enjoy the Little Things in Life gift card holder was such fun to make that I am going to look for more matchboxes.

Magical Midnight Masquerade Bendi Card Centerpiece

Graphic 45 Magical Midnight Masquerade Bendi Card Centerpiece: Savor Life and All Its Magic

Hello, G’45er’s!  Do you ever use your gorgeous G45 papers to create party centerpieces?  I made this Magical Midnight Masquerade Bendi Card Centerpiece with parties in mind!  If you’re hosting a prom party, a graduation party, birthday party or even a bridal shower, I think this vibrant and whimsical design would be a real conversation starter!

Magical Midnight Masquerade Bendi Card Centerpiece Midnight Masquerade by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 1

The inspiration for this project was that gorgeous ball gown on the 12×12 signature page of Midnight Masquerade.  I wanted to find a way to display that would capture all its wonderful detail.  To do this, I needed a base that would be larger than the basic bendi card design.  (You can find a link to the basic design HERE.)  This took a  llttle “mathing” but was not terribly difficult.  (Sadly, I forgot to write down what I did…so I’ll have to work another of these fun centerpieces up so I can share the numbers with you!)

Magical Midnight Masquerade Bendi Card Centerpiece Midnight Masquerade by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 2The end result was a fantastically dimensional, vibrant centerpiece!  I’m happy to share that this card made it all the way to CHA/Creativation back in January where it was displayed in the G45 booth.

Tips and Tricks for Magical Midnight Masquerade Bendi Card Centerpiece

Magical Midnight Masquerade Bendi Card Centerpiece Midnight Masquerade by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 3

If you loved to play with paper dolls when you were little, then this collection is your dream come true.  Midnight Masquerade is loaded with gorgeous ball gowns, fantastical flowers and  fabulous masks.  You’ll need a really sharp pair of fussy cutting scissors to create this centerpiece.  I found that my tiny Tim Holtz snips worked very well.  I inked all my edges with Pumice Stone Distress Ink to cover up any raw paper edges.

Magical Midnight Masquerade Bendi Card Centerpiece Midnight Masquerade by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 4

To create the dimensional skirt on the ballgown,  I gently shaped the skirt with the edge of my ruler.  When the paper began to curl, I glued just the outside edges to the base, pushing them toward the center.  Hold in place for a few seconds until the glue dries.

Magical Midnight Masquerade Bendi Card Centerpiece Midnight Masquerade by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 5

Use extra heavy cardstock for your card base so that it will hold up under the weight of the designer paper.  I also glued the ends of my bendi flaps in place to secure them.  Normally, you would leave the bendi flaps unattached  so that the card can be folded shut.  But since I was making a centerpiece instead of a card, I chose to glue the flaps in place.

Magical Midnight Masquerade Bendi Card Centerpiece Midnight Masquerade by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 6

Layer fussy cut flowers with dimensional flowers for extra fullness.

Magical Midnight Masquerade Bendi Card Centerpiece Midnight Masquerade by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 7

Add height to your creation by layering the fussy cut sentiment at the very top of the card base.

Magical Midnight Masquerade Bendi Card Centerpiece Midnight Masquerade by Kathy Clement Product by Graphic 45 Photo 8

Use border pieces and sentiments to add text, color and drama to your centerpiece. I backed these elements with metallic cardstock for even more glitter and shine.
