Little Birdie Celebrate Life Mixed Media Birthday Card

Hello, Friends!  Today we’re going to party with a Little Birdie Celebrate Life Mixed Media Birthday Card.  I’m of the opinion that one should be treated like royalty on one’s day of birth.  So I created a shabby chic birthday card that’s fit for a queen!

But that doesn’t mean this card is hard to make!   It’s all about simple layers, beautiful flowers and a few sneaky mixed media tricks.  These stress-free techniques make you look like a mixed media pro!

Quick and Easy Layers

  • Begin with a 6×6 top fold card base.  That’s easy, right?
  • Now cover the front with a 6×6 panel from Little Birdie’s Celebrate Life 12×12 pad.
  • Look through your stash for a square doily: cloth or paper is fine.  My cloth doily came from a thrift shop bin.  You could also add a square lacy die cut for this layer.
  • Next, stitch a 5″ square panel of the pink woodgrain cardstock to the doily.  Then center and adhere.
  • Finally die cut the bird image with a circle die.  If you don’t have a circle die, trace around a saucer, small bowl or other round object.  If you have an old compass in your stash, that works, too!  Back this image with dimensionals and adhere in the center of the card.
Simple Mixed Media Tricks and Tips

I love working with primed chipboard because it saves me a step.  Simply tap the chipboard with VersaMark Embossing Ink and then sprinkle with Stampendous Shabby White Embossing Enamel.  Now heat emboss until all the layers melt and blend.   I found an old Spellbinders Gilded Life Pendant in my stash.  Dry brush this with white chalk paint.  Then fill the center with some moss and wee colored eggs.  Add flat back pearls to finish.

Add a soft, shabby chic vibe to your Little Birdie Flowers by dry brushing them with white chalk paint.  When you dry brush, dip the tip of your brush in the paint.  Then swipe off most of the paint on a piece of paper or your craft mat.  Lightly feather the brush over the edges of the flower petals to give them that soft, painterly feel we love so much.

Then, dilute the paint on your craft mat and spatter it over the card front to add even more of a soft finish.

A Peek Inside

Cover the card interior with more designer papers.  Then decorate a side pocket with a 3×4 journal card and tuck in a chocolate. No birthday is complete without a bit of chocolate!  Die cut a Little Birdie Oval Tag and stamp it with a sentiment.  Then decorate with ribbon, mini key and cut apart images to finish.

Now you see how easy it is to make a birthday card that’s fit for royalty, I hope you’ll give it a try.

Celebrate Life Pocket Folio Tutorial

Little Birdie Crafts Celebrate Life Pocket Folio Tutorial by Kathy Clement Kathy by Design Photo 01
Little Birdie Crafts Celebrate Life Pocket Folio Tutorial

Hello, Friends!  This Little Birdie Celebrate Life Pocket Folio Tutorial reminds me of some Robert Louis Stevenson lines that I memorized as a child.  He penned, “The world is so full of a number of things, I’m sure we should all be as happy as kings.”   This lovely poem from “A Child’s Garden of Verses“, is a good one to remember any time, but especially during these trying times. I remind myself daily to be thankful for all the wonders that surround me.  Take time to  listen to the sounds of the birds.  Watch the bumblebees drink deeply from the blossoms in the garden.  And yes, take time to smell the flowers!  You’ll be happier if you do!  I promise!

Let’s Celebrate Life

This little 6″ x 6″ folio is made with (4) 12″ x 6″ panels of white cardstock.  First, lay the panels out side by side.  Then overlap the edges about 1/4″ and join together with your adhesive of choice.  Next, score this long panel every 6″.  You will have a little flap on the right hand side once this is done.  This will become the folio spine.  Simply accordion fold, place adhesive to create inner pockets and voila!  Learn how to do this in the tutorial below.

Layer Little Birdie Primed Chipboard with flowers and fussy cuts from the Celebrate Life Paper Pad, and you’ll have a lovely window garden that blooms all year round!

A ribbon closure holds everything together neat and tidy!  These little folios are quick and easy to create.  This makes them perfect for birthday, anniversary, new baby, graduation, Christmas or any special occasion when you wish to give a gift from the heart.  Just change out your papers to adapt to the event.

A Peek Inside

Peek inside the folio to find lots of room for photos and journaling.

The folio design provides a lovely hidden pocket to hold this large photo folio.  Adhere just the bottom edge of a punch out doily from the 12″ x 12″ collection and you’ve got a handy tuck spot for these tags and journal cards.

The insert has room for 4 larger photos.

Use the Dream Cut machine and Thin Tag Dies to create layered journal tags.  Join these together with jump rings.  Then decorate with a bit of gold string, Pearl Pink Paula flowers and charms from your stash.

The format of the second page mirrors the first.

Keeping the basic design the same makes for quick and easy crafting.

Little Birdie Crafts Celebrate Life Tall and Skinny Card Tutorial AND a Giveaway!

Hello, Friends!  Today I’m guest designing for Little Birdie Crafts with this “Celebrate Life” Tall and Skinny Card Tutorial.   Tall and Skinny cards are trendy right now, and for good reason: they are fun to make, give you lots of room to add embellishments, and they are a nice change of pace from the standard square or rectangular card.

This one measures 8 1/4″ x 4 1/4″ with a 3/4″ spine.  I needed to add that chunky spine to accommodate the box pocket inside!

In the video tutorial, I’ll show you how to create the card base using a single sheet of designer paper from the “Celebrate Life” collection.  I’ll also share  how to repair a BIG MISTAKE (which I made!) with a simple fix.

We’ll put the front of the card together piece by piece to  make it easy for you to reproduce the finished project.

Once you’ve made the box pocket, you can fill it up with lovely treats.  I like to call this type of card “a party in a box.”  They make great gifts!
