Frilly & Funkie On the Cutting Edge Challenge: Home Sweet Forest Home Mixed Media Canvas

Hello, Friends! It’s time for another wonderful challenge over on the Frilly and Funkie Blog. The incredibly inspiring Suzz is our hostess this go round, and the theme is “On the Cutting Edge”. With that in mind, I put together this little Home Sweet Forest Home Mixed Media Canvas. I’ll share all the details about it in a moment, but first, let’s see what Suzz has to say about this fun challenge.

Having recently acquired some beautiful new dies I thought it might be time to bring them out and show them off. This challenge is all about using your dies, punches or other cutting tools to create a masterpiece featuring at least one die cut / punched image. Make sure your art is in the vintage or shabby chic style and incorporates a die cut or punch.

Let’s see…how many ways did I use die cuts:

Sizzix Tiny House Die
Tim Holtz Lace Die
Fall Foliage Leaf Die
Tim Holtz Mixed Media Die #2 ( the cutaway portion of my focal image)

First, I added a layer of gesso to this 8″ x 10″ canvas. While the paint was drying, I hand stitched around the edges of an 8″ x 10″ piece of natural burlap. Next, I used Matte Mixed Media to attach it to the canvas.

While the glue was drying, I die cut chipboard and Tim Holtz Wallflower paper with the Sizzix Tiny Homes Die. This was assembled and transformed in to a wee bird house, complete with Spanish Moss Rooftop, some “found” string, and speckled eggs in a nest.

I colored seam binding ribbon with Wild Honey, Fossilized Amber and Twisted Citron Distress Oxide Inks. Then I tied a loopy bow. This was tucked in under the pretty yellow Petaloo Botanica Blossoms on the roof.

Home Sweet Forest Home Mixed Media Canvas: It’s all About Texture and Layers

The burlap layer provides wonderful texture for my layered leaves, Prills, Wendy Vecchi Mini Bricks, and lots of other goodies. I decoupaged some beetle eaten leaves that my fellow teamie Sara Emily gave me a few years back. First I spritzed them with Mica Spray, then I gently added Matte Multi Medium to both sides and pressed them into the burlap layer.

While the Matte Medium was still wet, I sprinkled some Gourd-geous Prills over it. This added wonderful color and texture.

Art is All Around You

Many of these botanical items were picked up on my walks at the park. The super tiny pine cones, lichen covered tree branch, sticks, moss, etc give this canvas a wonderfully woodsy feel. Art is all around you if you keep an eye out for it!

I also die cut a number of leaves, spritzed them with Antique Bronze Mica Spray and layered into the vignette.

Think twice before you toss an item into the trash!The negative space from the Wendy Vecchi Mini Bricks Mat Board makes a great platform for my sentiment.

First, I tapped the Baroque Frame with Ginger Alcohol Ink
Next, I wanted to add this speckled egg image to the frame. So I used the inside of the frame as a template. I just traced around the egg, then cut it out slightly larger than the pencil line.
Erase the pencil line!
Next, I added a custom sentiment with Botanical Remnant Rubs.
Then, I added Art Institute Dries Clear Adhesive to the back side of the frame and pressed it over the egg/sentiment.
Finally, I glued the frame over the scrap from Mini Bricks .

Frilly and Funkie Challenge: Flowers and Art Inverted Canvas with G45 Nature Sketchbook and Wendy Vecchi Stamps

Hello, Friends! It’s time for another fabulous challenge over at the Frilly and Funkie Blog. Today I’ve prepared a Flowers and Art Inverted Canvas using Graphic 45’s Nature Sketchbook and Wendy Vecchi stamps and goodies. First, let’s see what Cec, our hostess, has to say about this challenge.

Challenge Theme: Out Of The Cold!
It is winter and that means snow and cold in so many places so let’s head to the tropics. Create any vintage or shabby chic project that will make us feel warm – think lots of sunshine, bright colours, flora and fauna and even animals hiding in the rain forest.

I had to think a long time about this challenge but knew I wanted to incorporate Wendy’s flowers and the beautiful Nature Sketchbook papers. This inverted canvas started out as a card…and just kind of took me where it wanted to go.

From Card to Canvas

The inspiration for this entire piece was the bright tropical flowers in the center of the canvas. I made these by stamping Wendy Vecchi’s Mix and Match Art Stamps onto watercolor paper about a dozen times. Knowing that I wanted the flowers to be yellow, I stamped using Wendy Vecchi Dandelion Archival ink. This way, I had no harsh stamp lines around the edges.

Next, each flower layer was painted with Prima water colors. Then I stamped each image a second time to reinforce the detail lines. After fussy cutting, the layers were shaped, stacked and inked around the edges with Gathered Twigs Distress Ink. Then the centers were filled with FloraSoft. Finally, I painted the flowers with Clear Rock Candy Distress Crackle Paint to add shimmer. The wet Crackle paint was sprinkled lightly with Clear Rock Candy Dry Glitter.

Now it was time to add some stenciling, some clear texture paste, some die cutting, paper layering….and the base began to grow…and grow. Pretty soon I realized this card was destined to be a canvas.

A Warm Color Palette for Flowers and Art Inverted Canvas

I used lots of warm colors in my palette with little pops of blue and green.

Butterflies were fussy cut from the 12×12 pad and scattered around the canvas. Star anise is a great natural addition to a canvas like this. I painted each one with Scattered Straw Distress Paint.

Chipboard elements, metal keys, and wooden flourishes add lots of texture.

These metal pieces are tapped with Vintaj patina, then stacked along the side.

I stamped the sentiment from Wendy in Jet Black Archival Ink and heat embossed it with clear embossing powder. It was sponged with more ink, then cut apart and glued in place. The die cut swallow was treated with Distress Crazing medium and tapped with paint.

The back side of an 8×10 canvas was wrapped with tissue wrap and sprayed with various sprays. It has a lovely patina in real life. I like the depth that the inverted canvas provides. As a finishing touch, I brushed Antique Linen Distress Paint randomly onto the canvas.

Craft Hoarders Anonymous March Challenge and an Important Announcement

Hello Friends!

It’s the second Monday in March, and time for another great challenge over at Craft Hoarders Anonymous. This month we are doing a great color challenge based on this inspiration photo:

Oh, Spring! Green growing things and sweet baby leaves on trees and white puffy clouds in the sky! What a perfect color palette for this time of year! Yeah…I’m loving this color challenge.

I wanted to pick up on the creamy green/white tones in the color challenge and to really keep true to the spirit of Craft Hoarders, everything on this card came from my little scrap cart. I have no idea what these papers are…or where they came from. I can tell you that I made the roses with my Spellbinder Bitty Blossoms die and some pearlized cream paper. The ribbon is moss green micro ribbon and iridescent white metallic string.

I colorized the vintage black and white photo using my alcohol ink pens.

The roses were painted with bundled sage distress ink and then coated with Clear Rock Candy Distress paint. The leaves were spritzed with Biscotti Perfect Pearls Mist. I painted the gold metal roses with the Bundled Sage paint as well.

I followed a wedding or anniversary theme and added a little stamping on the inside of the card. Easy peasy!

Now for the important announcement. Sadly, this will be the last challenge over at Craft Hoarders. Gloria, our chief hoarder in charge and fearless leader has taken on some demanding design assignments that have really stressed her schedule. In order to maintain a healthy balance between family, health and work, she is having to make some hard choices and step away from some of her crafting obligations. Shutting down the challenge was not an easy decision, but it is the right decision for her….and we wish her well.
