Train Themed Masculine Flip Folio Tutorial with Your Creative Studio

Happy Saturday, Friends! Today I have a slightly grungy Train Themed Masculine Flip Folio Tutorial to share with you. It’s made with the January box from Your Creative Studio, and it’s lots of fun to make! Even if you don’t love grunge, or trains, you can make this flip folio base with any paper using any theme you do happen to like. It’s a great size to tuck into a tote bag or suitcase, so it’s perfect for travel.

A Touch of Vintage Grunge

This is another mixed media project. I started my crafty journey as more of a mixed media girl, then fell in love with patterned paper and cardmaking. On several occasions I’ve thought about tossing out my mixed media supplies because they take up a fair bit of space in my small studio. But those inks and sprays and stamps and embossing powders have been calling my name of late, and I have been at this long enough to know that it’s always a good idea to follow where the creative mojo leads you.

How to Make a Grungy Vintage Frame

The folio measures 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ with a 1/2″ spine, so you can make it with 8 1/2″ x 11″ cardstock. I’ve used 110# kraft cardstock to ensure that the base is sturdy. Create the rusty frame by altering chipboard with ink, embossing powder and sprays. Here’s how I created the frame:

First, apply a Dark Brown Chalk Ink pad directly to the surface of a Tim Holtz chipboard frame.
Next, cover the frame with Seth Apter Chunky Rust Textured Embossing Powder. Let the excess embossing powder roll off onto a sheet of printer paper or into a funnel tray. The coverage will not be complete, and that is OK. Heat set with your heat gun.
The frame will have a really grungy, rusty color. I wanted my frame to be more brown, so I applied another layer of Chalk Ink over the embossing. Then I sprayed with some “It’s Brown” Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist. (You can probably find something similar from Lindy’s Gang.)
Heat set the frame and watch the awesome texture come alive.
Back the frame with patterned paper from the YCV box, adhere a Tim Holtz Chipboard paper doll, quote chips and gears to finish the frame.

A Peek Inside

The inside of the folio has all kinds of fun fold outs, flaps and flips. I’ve accented the vintage papers from YCV with Annette Green’s Elizabeth Craft Designs Lace Borders and Postage Stamp Frames. They were just too perfect not to use in this project.
