Use Up Your Scraps!

Throwback Thursday Use Up Your Scraps!  Carta Bella Flower Garden More than a Card

Hello, Friends!  Are you ready to use up your scraps?  Nothing makes me happier than clearing out a bunch of scraps from a favorite collection.  That is, unless I use those scraps to make something fresh and pretty!  So for this week’s episode of Throwback Thursday, we’re making this garden themed card using ONLY scraps from Carta Bella’s Flower Garden collection.

Sound like fun?  Well, it was fun!  I even challenged myself to use only scraps of white cardstock to make the card base and interior mechanisms, too.  That’s a double win my friends!

My card base is 5 1/2″ x 6″.  Why?  Because I had created a little quad folio with a 12×12 sheet of white cardstock some time back.  Sadly, when I made a cut along the scored edge, things went off the rails.  So I had set this base in the “we’ll talk about this later” pile.  I was able to make the boo-boo useable by trimming 1/2″ off the bottom edge.  And that’s how I ended up with a 5 1/2″ x 6″ card base.

A Peek Inside

This is one of my “more than a card” creations.  I had the other part of the quad folio laying on my desk when I realized it would fit inside the card base. (See the top half of the card.)

Then I found a little gift card wallet from an earlier project that I had cast aside because of the odd dimensions (3 3/8″ x 4 1/2″) .  Don’t even ask me how that happened.  Let’s just say I probably should have taken a lunch break.  However, it made a really cute gift card wallet inside this card.

I am happy to report that I had no useable scraps left over after completing this project!  What a great feeling!

And that brings us to the end of another Throwback Thursday!  Do you feel inspired to dig out some scrappy bits and  make something beautiful?  Well, that’s a triple win for me, my friends!

Spellbinders Amazing Paper Grace Dahlia Dimensional Doily

Amazing Paper Grace Dahlia Dimensional Doily Die of the Month Spellbinders Carta Bella Flower Garden by Kathy Clement Photo 01

Spellbinders Amazing Paper Grace Dahlia Dimensional Doily Die of the Month April 2021

Hello, Friends!  Today’s post features a fun fold card made with  Spellbinders Amazing Paper Grace Dahlia Dimensional Doily.  This is the April 2021 Die of the Month, and it’s a beauty!  If you love gatefold cards and delicate filigree designs, then I think you will love this card design. Before we dig in, here’s a look at the dies in this months’ club:

In addition to the gorgeous filigree panel, you get the dimensional dahlia dies, rolled roses, leaves and a lacy insert.  I opted to work with just the filigree panel, rolled roses and leaves this time.

Presenting the Gatefold Easel Fancy Fold Card Design

Amazing Paper Grace Dahlia Dimensional Doily Gatefold Easel Card by Kathy Clement Photo 01

Easel cards are the “show-offs” of the cardmaking world, wouldn’t you agree?  Simple to make, but visually impacting, easel cards look great on display!  Gatefold cards have a high drama factor.  Open the doors of this fancy fold to see what delights await within.  I make a lot of both styles of cards for these reasons.  I don’t think I have ever combined the two fancy fold card style before.   But I immediately saw how this lovely die could marry the two styles together to make fabulous fancy fold card design.  So, I present to you the Dahlia Dimensional Doily Gatefold Easel Card.

Here’s how to put this unique fun fold card together.

  • First, create a 6×6 easel card base.
  • Now die cut the filigree panels from pink cardstock.
  • Then adhere the panels over brushed gold cardstock.
  • Next, trim the gold cardstock so that you have an extra 1/2″ of gold on the left and the right hand sides.
  • Now score a flap on each side.
  • Cut between the two filigree panels to create a gate fold.
  • Wrap the flaps behind a 5″ x 7″  card front.
  • Then wrap a ribbon closure around the entire assembly and adhere to the front of the easel card base.
Open the Gates!

When you open the gate fold, this is what is waiting inside.  Decorate the inside of the gates with vellum versions of the die.

Rolled Roses

This elegant set comes with 2 sizes of rolled rose dies.  I’ve used them on the pocket/brake area and on the gatefold door sentiment.

A Peek Inside

Here’s a peek inside the easel card base.  Add a pocket to the bottom half of the card to serve as a stopper/brake for the easel mechanism.  This gives you room to tuck in a little gift card wallet/note card.

I can see this die used for many different purposes.  It would make a gorgeous bookmark.  You could cut it from heavy cardstock and use it as a stencil.  Or add the dimensional dahlia to the center.  Becca has lots of great ideas on her blog.  You can also find samples on the Amazing Paper Grace Die of the Month Club Page.

So what’s the verdict on Gatefold Easel Cards?  Do we love them?  I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below.

Floral Mason Jar Shaker Embellishment Tutorial

Spellbinders Amazing Paper Grace Floral Mason Jar Die of the Month by Kathy Clement Kathy by Design Photo 01

Floral Mason Jar Shaker Embellishment Tutorial for Spellbinders APG DOM March 2021

Hello, Friends!  I’m super excited about sharing this Floral Mason Jar Shaker Embellishment Tutorial with you!  Why?  Because it is stinking cute, that’s why!  And easy to make!  Did I mention cute?  Soooo cute!  This is the Spellbinders Amazing Paper Grace Club Kit Die of the Month for March 2021.  My friends…it’s my favorite die that Becca has ever made.  I’m seriously in love with this set because of the amazing potential.

If you’ve ever priced out cute little shaker embellishments like this, then you know they have a big price tag.  Imagine being able to make as many of them as you want , in any theme for any occasion.  I spent a delightful afternoon playing with these dies alongside Carta Bella’s new Flower Garden papers.  Such fun!  I have a couple of samples to share with you here today, so let’s get started!

Bee-utiful Embellishments!

The Floral Mason Jar is designed to function as one of Becca’s Vignette dies.  But the minute I took it out of the packaging, I  knew it was destined to become the cutest little shaker embellishment ever!

Since I had Carta Bella’s brand new Flower Garden paper collection in house, it only took me a nanosecond to decide to pair it up with this die set.  The video tutorial below will walk you through the process step by step.  First, I’ll show you which dies to use.  Then, I will put the embellishment together with you so you can see each step.  If you’ve been intimidated by shaker embellishments, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how easy this process is.

And here’s a quick peek at the inside of this cheery little number.

Floral Mason Jar Card #2

Making that first card was so much fun, I had to take this die out on another play date.  Using the same paper collection, this time I featured butterflies instead of bees. Cute, right?

I should probably mention that all the flowers and foliage are made with the etched dies that are part of this 14-piece set.

Since easel cards are my favorite, I had to make one, just because.

The pocket on the inside of the  card acts as the “brake” or stopper for the easel mechanism.

Which means you have room to tuck in a little chocolate wallet.  Sweet, indeed!
