Stamperia Atelier Sewing Themed Folio with Tutorial: Frilly and Funkie Haberdashery Challenge
Hello, Friends! Grab a needle and thread and join me today as I share this Stamperia Atelier Sewing Themed Folio made for the Haberdashery Challenge at the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog. There’s a little tutorial for building the base and the box pocket along with a video tour. But before we dive into the project, let’s see what our clever and amazing host, Zoe, has to say about the challenge guidelines.
Challenge Theme: Haberdashery
A haberdasher is a person who sells small articles for sewing, such as buttons, ribbons and zippers. For this challenge create a vintage or shabby chic project including items found at a Haberdashery.
Stamperia Atelier Sewing Themed Folio: The Inspiration
I have been excited about this challenge from the moment it was posted. As I’ve shared here before, my mother was a wonderful seamstress. She had an old fashioned White sewing machine with a knee pedal. As a young bride, she saved her pennies until she could afford to buy it, and the handsome wood cabinet it rested in. Winters in New England were long, dreary and cold. But Mom’s sewing area was a paradise of color, pattern and design. I spent countless hours curled up beside her watching her sew. Throw pillows, curtains, furniture covers, clothing for the family, gifts…there was nothing she could not do with that trusty sewing machine. I think that my love for color and design were planted during the lovely hours I spent watching mom create with fabric. So when it came to the challenge, I wanted to create a really vintage looking vignette to honor those memories.
Stamperia Atelier Sewing Themed Folio: The Details
This 6″ x 8″ trifold folio has double 1/2″ spines. I’ve added machine stitching, distressed edges, stenciling, snippets of fabric and lace to amp up the shabby chic vibe. The Tim Holtz Vignette Frame has been antiqued with black gesso, tinted crackle texture paste, White Linen Dylusions Spray and Prima Crackle Texture Pastes. Then I filled the cavity with sewing notions (Haberdashery) that I’ve collected from estate sales and yard sales along with items purchased at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.
To complement the Stamperia Atelier papers, I’ve added Antique Gold Check Ribbon and Little Birdie Crafts Blue Natalie Handmade Flowers. The dress form on the frame is one that I’ve had in my stash for ages. I traced the body onto a scrap of designer paper, cut it out and glued it on.
Stamperia Atelier Sewing Themed Folio: The Frame
After I painted the Vignette Frame with Black Gesso, I tinted Opaque Crackle Texture Paste with a couple of drops of Old Paper Re-inker. Brush this onto the frame and let it dry. Then spritz the frame randomly with Dylusions White Linen Spray. Heat set. Then dip your finger into Prima Antique Silver Crackle Texture and rub randomly into the crevices of the frame. Repeat the process with Gold Crackle. Let this dry. Then brush the raised areas very lightly with a sanding block. I love how old the frame looks. Tap the Venise Lace with Frayed Burlap Distress Ink to age it before you adhere it.
Stamperia Atelier Sewing Themed Folio: Mixed Media Effects Built in
Stamperia paper collections have stolen my heart. The collaged papers have all the mixed media effects built into them. So you can put a folio like this together very quickly without all the mess and time involved in mixed media pursuits. By the way, in case you were wondering, an atelier is a workshop or a studio used by an artist.
Stamperia Atelier Sewing Themed Folio: A Peek Inside
The interior of this folio is made up of 3 panels. The base is built with 11″ x 17″ kraft cardstock that I found at Envelopes.com. You could, of course, piece together 2 sheets of 8 1/2″ x 11 cardstock with Scor-Tape to create the base. Both the right and center panels measure 6″ x 8″. The right hand panel is a cutaway that measures 4″ x 8″. I added a pocket and some small shaped folios here.
To make these little folios do the following:
Fussy cut the images from the paper collection.
Fold kraft cardstock and trace the shapes. For the spool, keep the fold on the left. For the dress form, keep the fold on the top.
Cut the traced shapes out, leaving a portion of the fold intact.
Glue the images onto the base.
Stamperia Atelier Sewing Themed Folio: The Flap Page
To create the flap page:
Cut a 5 5/8″ x 7 7/8″ panel of designer paper. This will line the left hand panel of the folio. Do not adhere yet.
Cut a 5 3/4″ x 4″ panel of the brown burlap. Score a 1/2″ flap on the left hand side.
Adhere the flap behind the larger piece of paper. Then adhere the entire assembly onto the folio base.
Inside, I’ve stamped Tim’s Inventor 3 onto panels of Mixed Media Heavy Stock that have been colored with Old Paper, Antique Linen, Stormy Sky and Tattered Rose Distress Oxide Inks. Then I added a few stenciled stitches with Prima Gold Crackle.
Stamperia Atelier Sewing Themed Folio: The Box Pocket and Accordion Folio
I added a waterfall cascade on the reverse side of the right hand panel using Tammy Tutterow’s Waterfall One Dies. (retired) But the center panel is the very heart of this folio. I’ve added a box style pocket and accordion fold folio here.
The collage on the cover is created with Tim’s Sewing Room Die and a fussy cut element from the Atelier collection. Here’s how I made the folio.
Cut 2 sheets of 8 1/2″ x 11″ kraft cardstock to measure 4 1/4″ x 6 1/4″.
Join the two 6 1/4″ ends together. To do this, adhere a strip of 1/2″ Scor-Tape on the very end of one panel. Then overlap the the other panel so that it lines up perfectly with the Scor-Tape margins.
Score the panel every 4 1/4″.
Accordion fold, and trim away any excess.
Line each panel with a 4″ x 6″ cut of designer paper.
Fussy cut elements from the paper collection. Adhere just one side to create tuck spots. Tim’s Remnant Design Tape adds extra layers of interest.

To help you get a better feel for the flow of the folio, I’ve created a short YouTube video tour. I added in step out photos with descriptions that will help you build the folio base and box pocket. This is not a complete tutorial, but between the information in this post, the photos and the tour, you should have all the information you might need to create your own version of this project.

Dragonfly Days Pocket and Tag Folio Tutorial for Back to Nature Challenge at Frilly & Funkie

Having just returned from our annual trek to the mountains of West Virginia where we observed so much natural beauty on our hikes, I couldn’t help but make my challenge nature themed. You can make anything you like, from a card or tag to altered art, just be sure to include a natural element in your vintage or shabby chic project. Think real twigs, leaves, shells, pebbles. Or you could include a die cut or a stamped or stenciled image representing a natural object.
My mind went immediately to summer….and blue skies…and dragonflies. And that was how this lovely little Dragonfly Days Pocket and Tag Folio Tutorial came into being.
Dragonfly Days Pocket and Tag Folio Tutorial: The Base-ics
I designed a brand new style of folio for this challenge, which is always a good way to start any project in my world! This is a 7 1/4″ x 5 3/4″ side opening folio with a 1/2″ nested spine. The album has a fun staggered edge pocket and tag interior with my usual flaps and pockets. I think you will enjoy creating this base following the simple tutorial in the YouTube Video below.
TIP: Reinforce the folio spine by wrapping it with burlap. This not only looks awesome, it protects those delicate creases in the spine,
TIP: Punch holes in the spine and thread custom dyed seam binding ribbon through them. Alter the keys and dragonfly charm with Seth Apter’s incredible Patina Oxide Baked Texture. I am completely smitten with these Baked Textures! Look how old they made these keys look. And it took mere seconds to accomplish. Ya gotta love that!
Dragonfly Days Pocket and Tag Folio Tutorial Close Ups and Tips
TIP: Use an embossing pen to add Versamark Ink to the wings of the dragonfly. Then heat emboss with Seth Apter’s Baked Texture. Even my husband was amazed at how cool the wings look!
TIP: Distress Opaque Crackle Texture Paste adds subtle texture and design to this image. Mix a few drops of Old Paper Reinker in with a quarter sized blob of paste. Mix with a palette knife. Spread through the flourish stencil from Tim’s Mini Layering Stencils Set #10. It’s just so pretty!
Dragonfly Days Pocket and Tag Folio Tutorial: A Peek Inside
Stamperia Wonderland paper is filled with dragonflies and botanical images like these. That’s why I chose it for this project.
TIP: Create a fancy edged pocket by fussy cutting a floral cluster from the corner. Score a 1/4″ line along the left and the bottom edges. Fold, angle the corners, and fold to create a unique pocket.
This photo shows you the neat staggered edge/pocket and tag layout of the folio. I have to confess, I am really tickled with the way this turned out.
TIP: Cover tags in a flash! Use a Graphic 45 Regular Kraft Tag Album in combo with the G45 Regular Tag and Gears Die. You can cut up to 4 layers of designer paper at a time with this die.
Stamp covered tags with the Dragonfly image from Stamper’s Anonymous Classics 1. I used Butterscotch Archival Ink (retired). Heat embossed with Seth’s Vintage Beeswax Baked Texture. For this project, I decided handwritten quotes would be cool. Tear the paper edges, then adhere the quotes with Vintage Collage Distress Medium. I talk more about this in the video.

Graphic 45 Imagine Hot Air Balloon Embellishment Tutorial and Tim Holtz Altered Mini Clipboard for the “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” Challenge at Frilly and Funkie
Hello, Friends! It’s time for a brand new challenge on the Frilly and Funkie Blog. I’m the hostess for this round, and the theme is “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.” I’ve prepared a really fun Graphic 45 Imagine Dimensional Hot Air Balloon Embellishment Tutorial for you today. The balloon is the focal point on my altered Tim Holtz Mini Clipboard. You’re going to have so much fun with this post! We’ll look at the details in a moment, but first, let’s look at the challenge guidelines.
Challenge Theme: Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Summer is a great time to travel. For this challenge, create a vintage or shabby chic travel themed project. Think folded maps, cruise ships, road signs, compasses, passports, trains, planes or automobiles. As long as your project features a travel theme, you’re headed in the right direction.
Tim Holtz Mini Clipboard with Graphic 45 Imagine Hot Air Balloon Embellishment Tutorial
Folks, I hope you are not tired of seeing me create with this Graphic 45 Imagine Collection. I keep thinking of new ways to use it. This time, I’ve used it to alter a Tim Holtz Mini Clipboard. What fun! I got a little mixed media practice in, which made me very, very happy. Then, the idea to create a dimensional hot air balloon embellishment popped into my head. I pulled out my G45 Imagine Stamps and 12″ x 12″ Patterns and Solids popped into my head, and the fun factor rose to new heights.
Tim Holtz Altered Mini Clipboard: Laying the Foundation
If you’ve never altered one of these little clipboards before, you really owe it to yourself to do so. They are so much fun to work with. You can find examples of past projects HERE and HERE. I love the fact that the clip is easy to remove from the base. This makes the job of altering the mini clipboard so much easier.
First, I traced the base onto my designer paper. After sponging the edges with Frayed Burlap Distress Ink, I adhered the papers to the base. If I had it to do again, I would only line the back side of the base as I ended up covering up most of the paper on the front with my mixed media goodies. I applied Ranger Opaque Crackle Texture paste around the edges, then gently head dried. When the cracks were clearly visible and the paste was dry, I went over the surface with Gathered Twigs and Tarnished Brass Distress Stains. I added some more texture with Seth Apter Dirty Sand Baked Enamel, some die cut gears, and some random stamping.
Graphic 45 Imagine Hot Air Balloon Embellishment Tutorial
I’ve created a little Snapguide tutorial so you can create your own Graphic 45 Hot Air Balloon Embellishment. This was my favorite part of this whole project.
I hope you’ll find lots of ways to use this Hot Air Balloon Embellishment Tutorial. If you wish to add this dimensional embellishment to a card front, don’t adhere the final panel on the right. Instead, secure it with one of Tim’s mini paper clips. That way, you can fold it flat for mailing.
The Flip Side
I hate to let a perfectly good surface go to waste. So I created a little waterfall element on the flip side of my altered clipboard. I used Graphic 45 Regular Kraft Tags and the Regular Tag and Gears Die for this step. The domed edge of the tag creates such a pretty shape that I could not resist using them.
Enclose magnets on the back side of the belly band to make a neat closure for the waterfall. I simply folded the ends of this border strip over Basic Grey small magnets and adhered shut. It works beautifully.
Score a 1/2″ flap on the base of each tag, Die cut the tag liner using the Square Tag and Gears Die. Cut a 1/2″ flap from the base of each liner. Then adhere it below the fold line as seen here. This way the waterfall mechanism will fold easily.
I think a hot air balloon vacation could be quite the adventure, don’ t you?
Create this little folio by scoring a 6 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ scrap of kraft cardstock in half. Round the corners. Add a 3″ x 4″ ephemera card to the front and adhere to the clipboard base.
Place magnets beneath the liner papers and then cover with designer paper and the “B” side of an ephemera card. This hidden journaling spot is a great place to write down memoirs of your trip.
