Authentique Frosted Memories Winter Layout: It’s a Wonderful Life

Hello, Friends!  The inspiration for this Authentique Frosted Memories Winter Layout started with a photo of the home I grew up in.  My parents bought this home on the hill in Central Vermont in 1956, 10 days before I was born.  To call it a “fixer upper” is to be an optimist.  The yard was nothing but dirt, the wrap around porch was rotting and falling apart and the interior plaster walls were cracked with age.  But Mom had a vision, a strong work ethic, and incredible creative skills.  By the time I was old enough to recognize the house as “home” it was easily the prettiest one on the hill.  It was surrounded by a white picket fence, the porch (repaired by my dad) was a wonderful place to play on a rainy day, and flower gardens filled every corner of the yard.  The walls had been beautified with paint and wallpaper.  Windows sparkled.  It was a wonderful life.

Many years have gone by since I lived in that humble home.  Imagine my surprise when I spotted this photo in my Facebook feed.  One of my childhood friends had posted it…and there was no caption…but my heart immediately recognized that bend in the road and that frosted home perched on the top of the hill.  I could instantly smell the freshness of the snow and the pines, feel the bite of the icy winter air on my cheeks, hear the squeak of the snow beneath my boots and remember the joy of walking through that door to smell Mom’s bread coming out of the oven.  Although I rarely create 12″ x 12″ layouts, I knew I had to scrap this photo to display in my studio to remind me that it really is a wonderful life.

Lucky for me, I had Authentique Paper’s gorgeous Frosted Collection Kit in the house.  I can’t think of any papers that would work better for this photo.  So here’s how I created this layout, layer by layer.

This is the original photo, and while it looks great online, it printed out very dark and blurry.  So I began this project by cleaning up the photo in my editing program.  I decided to remove the telephone poles, streetlight and wires because these things were not installed when I was growing up “on the hill.”  Once I had the photo cleaned up, I got down to the fun part of creating this 12″ x 12″ layout.

Authentique Frosted Memories Winter Layout: Layer by Layer

  • First, mat a 11 3/4″ x 11 3/4″ square of Light Blue Linen Cardstock on a 12″ x 12″ piece of Blue Denim Linen Cardstock.
  • Next, trim Frosted Three to measure 11 5/8″ and stitch the three layers together on a sewing machine.  (All the edges are lightly distressed and inked with Hickory Smoke Distress Ink.) Leave the threads long in the upper left hand corner so you can tie a little silver charm there.
  • Now cut an 11 1/4″ x 9 1/4″ panel of Frosted Two and mat on slightly larger panels of the same Light Blue and Blue Denim Linen Cardstock.  Stitch around the edges once again. Center and adhere to the main panel.
  • The next step is to cut an 11″ x 3 1/2″ panel of Frosted Five.  Mat this as before.  Before you adhere this to the page, die cut 4 sets of white snowflakes using Tim Holtz “Snow Flurries” On the Edge Die.  Adhere the snowflake borders above and below the panel, then adhere to the page.
  • Now cut a 5 1/2″ x 11″ panel of Frosted One and mat as before.  Adhere as seen in the photo.
  • My photo is printed 4 3/4″ x 5 1/2″.  For stability, I backed it with a layer of chipboard, then adhere it to the snowflake panel.

  • Create embellishments by fussy cutting images and sentiments from Frosted Six.  Back these with dimensionals to make them pop.  Add sentiments from Frosted “Elements” Die Cuts.

  • Die cut mittens from Frosted Three and Four. with a Spellbinders Smitten Mitten Steel Contour Die.  To create the contrasting cuffs, cut along the cuff line of the die and adhere  as seen in the photo.  Join the mittens together with an eyelet and bit of ribbon.  Place dimensionals between the mittens and adhere as seen in the photo.

  • Die cut custom flowers from Frosted Four and One using Tammy Tutterow’s Shabby Posy Dies.  Add vintage buttons or purple stamens to the centers and adhere in the corners of the photo.
I’m so thankful that I had the opportunity to share this layout and these memories with you
here today.  Hopefully, I shared some tips, techniques or inspiration that you can use in your
own crafty adventures.  If so, I’d love to hear from you in the comment section below.

Winter Blues Christmas Folio

Winter Blues Christmas Folio for the Really Reasonable Ribbon Blog Hop

Hello, Friends!  Welcome to the RRR December Blog Hop!  You should be coming here from Karen’s lovely blog.   Today’s project is a Winter Blues Christmas Folio made with Kaisercraft “Frosted” and the Winter Blues Ribbon Club Assortment from Really Reasonable Ribbon.

Winter Blues Christmas Folio Kaisercraft Frosted by Kathy Clement for Really Reasonable Ribbon Photo 01

Is there any color combo that’s more wintry than blue and white?  Once again, I pulled out my few remaining bits and bobs of Kaisercraft Frosted to play alongside this scrumptious 5/8″ Porcelain Diamond Satin Ribbon.  Combined with a little Silver Metallic String it really makes the design on the front of this 7″ x 5″ folio pop!

The folio is wrapped with another length of Porcelain Diamond Satin.  Leave the tails long to serve as the closure for the folio.

Winter Blues Christmas Folio: The Bow Cluster

I used my Zutter Bow-it-All Tool to tie this 3 1/2″ double loop bow and the 4 loop metallic string bow.  If you struggle with tying bows, I really recommend this tool.  I use it every time I craft because using it is like having an extra pair of hands in the studio.

To complete the bow cluster, string two silver glitter jingle bells on more metallic string.  Tie a knot to keep them from slipping off.  Then add a small dab of hot glue to the top of your bow cluster and place the knotted string in the glue.  Immediately add the Little Birdie Margery Ivory Flower on top to hold the jingle bells in place.

This is a very simple folio design and is almost identical to the folio I made a while back with Garden Goddess.   The left hand side hosts an 8 page waterfall.  On the right, there’s a little pocket with goodies tucked inside.

Winter Blues Christmas Folio: The Waterfall

Each of the eight pages in the waterfall measures 4″ x 4 3/4″.  To hold everything closed, I devised a little magnetic belly band.  (These cute die cut silhouettes are from Spellbinders..and they are on sale right now! )

You can fit 16 photos inside the waterfall feature.

I’ve decorated the pages with tuck spots and  flaps for journaling and extra fun.

Winter Blues Christmas Folio: The Pocket

The side pocket is filled with this sweet little tea bag/gift card wallet, a hand crocheted ivory snowflake and a honey stick.

Here’s a look at the empty pocket, with the same sweet couple from the cover of the folio.  There’s room for photos, recipes or other goodies here.

I have a tutorial for this folio base made with another collection HERE.

On with the hop!

From here, hop on over and see what sweet creations the delightful Linsey has in store for you.  You can find the complete hop list on the RRR Blog.  And you will want to visit all the blogs so your name is entered in the drawing for your very own Winter Blues Ribbon Assortment.

Thanks so much for hopping! If you are interested in purchasing this folio, you can find it in my ETSY shop.  I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below.

Frosted Memories Vintage Style Christmas Card Folio

Frosted Memories Vintage Style Christmas Card Folio for Really Reasonable Ribbon

Hello, Friends!  Do you ever travel back in time when you are crafting?  While creating this Frosted Memories Vintage Style Christmas Card Folio, I found myself back in my childhood home.  The hill we lived on in Vermont was a long, steep dirt road.  And when winter rolled in, the hill would come alive with kids bundled up in snow gear waiting to take a thrilling sled ride to the bottom. We would zip down with the snow flying back in our faces, whooping with delight until we steered off into a snowbank to stop ourselves.  Then we’d trudge all the way back up that hill, pulling our sleds behind us, our breath freezing in the air like plumes of smoke.  And we never got cold.  Oh, those were fun times!

I tried to capture the joy of those times, and the shimmering snow in this 5″ x 7″ x 1/2″ card folio made with Kaisercraft Frosted. (retired..but you can still find some HERE.)  If you’d like to see other ways I’ve used this lovely collection, you can find past projects HERE.

The Winter Blues Ribbon Club Assortment from RRR had the perfect playmates for this card.   I layered up some White Delicate Stitched Satin Ribbon with 3/8″ Porcelain with Silver Edge in the bow cluster.  Isn’t it dreamy?

If you are new to tying bows, I highly recommend Delicate Stitched Satin.  It is easy to work with, and ties the prettiest bows!

White Crochet Lace from the assortment makes me think of a delicate snowflake.  I love seeing it peek out from behind the little sentiment.

Creating this little woodland scene was so much fun!  I asked our clever son to cut me some small, thin wood slices in his workshop.  And he was happy to oblige!  here’s how I created this woodland scene.

I know it sounds like a lot of steps, but it actually comes together faster than it takes to write it out!

Do you spot the ribbon inside this card?  I’ve covered the 1/2″ spine area with 3/8″ Blue Topaz/Light Silver Diamond Grosgrain Ribbon.  This is also from the ribbon club assortment.

I liked it so much, I used it again to decorate the belly band on this tea bag wallet.

And I used it to decorate the honey stick that goes with this Earl Grey Tea Bag.

I loaded this nostalgic beauty into my Etsy shop, and if you hurry, it might still be there!

I hope I’ve shared some tips, techniques and ideas that you can use in your own crafty adventures.  If so, I’d love to hear from you in the comment section below.

Santa Claus is Watching Shaker Card

Santa Claus is Watching Shaker Card with Kaisercraft Frosted

Hello, Friends!  You know that saying, “Make new friends, but keep the old?”  Well, I’ve been making friends with some of the older collections in my stash.  This Santa Claus is Watching Shaker Card is made with Kaisercraft’s Frosted Collection.  (See more Frosted HERE.) I was thrilled to find that I still had quite a lot of these lovely blue and white papers, so I went to work creating some sweet Christmas goodies that I’ll be sharing with you all this month.  Since I love shaker cards and vintage Santa images, this shaker card might be my favorite.

This card may look complicated, but it’s actually a super simple design.  The secret to its success is the shaker element and the gorgeous florals from Little Birdie Crafts.

Santa Claus is Watching Shaker card Kaisercraft Frosted by Kathy Clement Photo 02

  • Begin by creating a 5″ x 7″ side fold card from ivory cardstock.
  • Then cut a 4 7/8″ x 6 7/8″ panel of Silver Sparkle Cardstock from My Favorite Things.
  • Next cut a 4 5/8″  x 6 5/8″ panel of the Vintage Santa pattern from Frosted.  Stitch this to the Silver Sparkle Cardstock.

That’s it…one layer of designer paper stitched to a layer of glitter cardstock.  I love this Silver Sparkle paper because the glitter is sealed into the paper, so nothing flakes off.  It’s wonderful stuff.

Use a blending tool to cover a  3 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ Tim Holtz Vignette Frame with Iced Spruce Distress Oxide Ink.  You will have to really grind that ink into the crevices.  Then spray the frame with Brushed Pewter Distress Stain Spray.

TIP:  Place the frame in an old box before spraying for easy clean-up.

Heat dry the frame.  Then use a palette knife to add Ranger Opaque Crackle Texture Paste along the edges to resemble snow.  While the texture paste is still wet, sprinkle it with Distress Clear Rock Candy Dry Glitter.  Then set the window aside to dry for a while.

Next, cut (2) 3 1/4″ x 4 1/4″ panels of clear acrylic cardstock.   When the frame is completely dry, adhere one piece on the back of the frame.  Then add 2 layers of foam tape along the edges of the frame, making sure the tape does not show through the window, or on the sides. Fill this space with sequins, beads or whatever you like.  then seal it with the second piece of clear acrylic cardstock.

You will then glue this whole assembly over Santa’s face.  Let it set up completely before you continue.

TIP:  to hide the white sides of the foam tape beneath the frame, I wrapped the perimeter with 1/4″ black gingham ribbon.  Tie a bitty bow on top.

I arranged an assortment of Little Birdie Flowers along the side of the frame.  These are painted with Ranger Grit-Paste and sprinkled with Rajni Chawla’s Frosted Glitter.  The flowers I used are: Sangria English Roses, Paulina Candy Mix, and Audria Passion 9 Pc.  The ribbon is tied with RRR Black Plaid.

I picked up this chipboard sentiment at a crafty stash sale.  It was already painted red, but to give it a bit more holiday sparkle, I brushed on some Xmas Red Stickles.

Here’s a look at the inside.  A cute little pocket made from a postcard and a little chocolate treat!  Santa must have this person on his nice list!

Kaisercraft Frosted Last Minute Gift Tags

Kaisercraft Frosted Last Minute Gift Tags

Hello, my Friends!  The Christmas Countdown clock is ticking loud and clear!  I keep finding “one more thing” on my to-do list.  Yesterday, I found I needed to make some quick gift tags to tie on to some Christmas packages that my dear husband is delivering to business associates today.  These Kaisercraft Frosted Last Minute Gift Tags were a snap to make, but oh so shabby chic and pretty.

Use Your Scraps!

I had scraps of Kaisercraft Frosted on my work table left over from the Christmas Pop Up Gift Card holder that I shared yesterday.  I also had scraps of cardstock that I had used for matting images.  Why not make some little gift tags?  So I turned on my audio book and went to work.

Kaisercraft Frosted Last Minute Gift Tags by Kathy Clement Photo 2

First, I created the tag bases from cardstock.  As you can see, each tag is a different size and shape.  I did use one Graphic 45 Ivory Staples tag that was in a work basket on my desk.  But the other two tags are made with gray cardstock.

Merry and Bright Kaisercraft Frosted Last Minute Gift Tags #1

Kaisercraft Frosted Last Minute Gift Tags by Kathy Clement Photo 3For this 4.25″ x 4.75″ square tag, I started out with a scrap of gray matting cardstock.  I used my 1/2″ Corner Chomper to round the bottom corners.  Then I used my Scallop Corner chomper on the top to create a decorative edge.

Kaisercraft Frosted Last Minute Gift Tags by Kathy Clement Photo 4

Next, I trimmed up a scrap of the cable knit sweater paper from Frosted and repeated the corner chomping routine.  Then I just quickly added the darling vintage image and some sticker elements from the collection.  The finishing touch is an Off White Shimmer Satin Bow, a glittery silver jingle bell, silver metallic string and some white WOC flowers.  A snippet of Silver Metallic Grosgrain Ribbon dresses up my Tim Holtz paper clip embellie. Tag one, done!

Counting our Blessings: Kaisercraft Frosted Last Minute Gift Tags #2

This tall and skinny tag followed the same procedure, only with a 3″ x 6″ scrap of gray cardstock.

Kaisercraft Frosted Last Minute Gift Tags by Kathy Clement Photo 6I also die cut a small label from a scrap of the pretty blue patterned paper, cut it in half, and tucked it behind my focal image to add a pop of color.  Tags are one of the best ways I know  of to use up scraps!

Jingle Bells: Kaisercraft Frosted Last Minute Gift Tags #3

Kaisercraft Frosted Last Minute Gift Tags by Kathy Clement Photo 7

Since I had used up all my gray cardstock scraps, I grabbed a Graphic 45 Staples Ivory Square tag as the base for this 3rd tag.

Kaisercraft Frosted Last Minute Gift Tags by Kathy Clement Photo 9

Here’s a helpful tip: Leave the ends of your silver metallic string long enough to tie through the handles of your gift bag.

Also, add  a snippet of ribbon to a paper clip to make a festive embellishment.  I also used up some leftover die cut snowflakes on this tag.

Super quick, super easy and I used up my scraps!

Now I need to hit the kitchen and get some Christmas baking done!  Wishing you a joy-filled and productive day!

Cheerio,

kathy
