Boy oh Boy! New Challenge at Frilly and Funkie

Boy oh Boy!  The King of the Seas Mixed Media Canvas for Frilly and Funkie

Hello, Friends!  It’s time for a fabulous new challenge over at the Frilly and Funkie Blog.  Our lovely hostess for the Boy oh Boy Challenge is the elegant and inspiring Jenny, and here are her instructions:

Challenge Theme: Boy oh Boy!
Create a vintage or shabby chic project with a man in mind. Let’s see those male themed creations come to life.

I love creating masculine projects, so I was excited to see this one.  I had one idea in mind, but when I was packing up my studio for our recent move, my hand fell on the incredibly gorgeous Voyage Beneath the Sea Collection from Graphic 45…..and I took a sharp turn in a new direction.  I’m so glad I did, because I had the BEST time creating my King of the Seas Canvas to share with you here today.

Boy oh Boy Challenge at Frilly and Funkie:Voyage Beneath the Sea Canvas 01I so rarely indulge in a Mixed Media canvas like this one, but Boy oh Boy, did I have FUN!!!!  My sweet husband Dale adores the ocean, and when he was a little fella, he used to dream that he had discovered the Lost City of Atlantis.  So when I saw these fabulous steampunk ocean images, this canvas began to unfold in my brain.  And Boy oh Boy, what an inky good time was in store for me!

Boy oh Boy Challenge at Frilly and Funkie:Voyage Beneath the Sea Canvas 02This is an 8″ x 10″ gessoed canvas.  I started my Voyage Beneath the Sea by creating a resist background with the Graphic 45 stamps that match the set.  Using Ranger Archival Coffee Ink and Clear Embossing Powder, I stamped and heat embossed the blank canvas.  Next, I spritzed on layers of Carved Pumpkin, Mermaid Lagoon and Twisted Citron Distress Sprays Stains drying between layers so the ink would not get muddy.  Once I was happy with that, I used a gear layering stencil and crackle texture paste to add another layer to the canvas.   Waiting for that to dry was the hardest part of the process!  I am such an impatient crafter…and I confess I did pull out my heat tool to speed things along!

Boy oh Boy Challenge for Frilly and Funkie:Voyage Beneath the Sea Canvas 04We’ve had such a strange journey with the sale of this house that this sentiment from the ephemera pack had to find its way into the design!  And, orange is one of Dale’s favorite colors.  I colored white corrugate board with the same ink colors and mounted the sentiment on that and some great bronze metallic paper I found in the Closet of Shame.  I also sprinkled the surface with various Stampendous embossing powders and potions to add touches of metal and cool texture. My chipboard gears were painted with Tarnished Brass and Antiqued Bronze Distress Paints, then tapped with Broken China DP.  I love how rusty and old they look.

Boy oh Boy Challenge for Frilly and Funkie:Voyage Beneath the Sea Canvas 05Doesn’t this dapper fellow look as though he might have come from Atlantis?  I added more steampunk chippies, seed beads and pearls to the mix  and I have to confess, I love the way this turned out.

Boy oh Boy Challenge for Frilly and Funkie:Voyage Beneath the Sea Canvas 06And here’s our regal King of the Seas!  I die cut my seahorse onto the bronze metallic paper, then used a texture fade to add, well, texture.  A second layer was cut from corrugate to add thickness, and I tapped on some Broken China and Carved Pumpkin Paints.  The King of the Seas is wearing a crown adorned with sapphires, emeralds and pearls that have been harvested from his watery kingdom.  His netting “train” is made from a mesh garlic bag, stained with Mermaid Lagoon ink and filled with treasures from the deep.

Boy oh Boy Challenge for Frilly and Funkie:Voyage Beneath the Sea Canvas 11These lovely fish are swimming in my faux reef, made from white corrugate.  I love the texture this adds to the overall scene.  And I’m sorry, but that itty bitty seahorse charm in the birdcage makes me laugh with delight.  And just look at all that yummy color and texture in the background.  I almost hated to cover it up!

Boy oh Boy Challenge for Frilly and Funkie: Voyage Beneath the Sea Canvas 10I had already packed all my seashells away, but I manged to scrounge up a real sand dollar to add to the mix.  I painted the center with Carved Pumpkin stain.

Boy oh Boy Challenge for Frilly and Funkie: Voyage Beneath the Sea Canvas 09Here’s Dale, exploring the watery depths.  This really is his motto…he’s always ready for a trip to the beach at a moment’s notice.

Boy oh Boy Challenge for Frilly and Funkie: Voyage Beneath the Sea Canvas 03I can’t remember the last time I had this much fun in the studio!  I was so engrossed in this project that I lost all track of time, and Dale had to come hunt me down and remind me it was time to eat.

I hope you’ll play along in the Frilly and Funkie Boy oh Boy Challenge. At the end of the challenge the Frilly and Funkie team will choose their top four picks. Our first place winner will be invited to join us in a Guest DT spot at Frilly and Funkie. Three additional talented participants will receive badges to display on their blogs. Everyone who enters and adheres to the challenge guidelines will be entered into a drawing to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique!  You can find all the guidelines and link up your project on the Frilly and Funkie Blog.  I can’t wait to see what you make!

It’s Hip to Be Square Challenge at F&F

Feeling Groovy Card for It’s Hip to Be Square Challenge at Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog

Hello, Friends!  Get out your sunglasses and bell bottoms and put some flowers in your hair, because it’s time for the It’s Hip to be Square Challenge at the Frilly & Funkie Challenge Blog. Cec is our hostess this time around and here’s what she says about this fun challenge:

Let’s go retro and make a square project influenced by the brighter colours and/or images of the hippie era of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.  Think psychedelic, paisley, peace and vintage rock and roll.

Oh, this one is right in my wheelhouse, because that was my era!  I remember the neon colors, paisley prints and funky fashion like it was yesterday.  With that in mind, I worked up this little 6×6 placard and titled it “Feeling Groovy.”

It's Hip to Be Square Challenge Frilly & Funkie 01I had loads and loads of good inky fun creating this retro piece.  I started with a 5″ square of watercolor paper that I spritzed and embossed with a paisley Spellbinder’s embossing folder.  I pulled Mustard Seed, Picked Raspberry, Twisted Citron and Carved Pumpkin Distress Inks out and went to work on adding the psychedelic colors of that era that I remember so very well.

It's Hip to Be Square Challenge Frilly & Funkie 02I smooshed the inks onto my craft mat, spritzed them with water until they beaded up then pressed my watercolor paper into the lovely inky puddles, drying each layer as I went along.  After several layers of ink were applied and I was happy with the colors, I rubbed my ink pads lightly across the embossed portions of the card to bring out the raised edges.  Then everything was spritzed with Heirloom Gold Perfect Pearls Mist.  I stitched the background onto black card, and double matted it with shocking pink and gold metallic card.

It's Hip to Be Square Challenge Frilly & Funkie 03Flower Power is a phrase I remember well, so I had to add some pretty hand made posies to the design.  Using Heartfelt Creations Majestic Morning and Delightful Daisy cling stamps and dies (new to the Funkie Junkie Boutique!  How exciting!) I created these brilliant blooms.  I added flower soft and Prima Flower Centers and I really like how the black grounds the blooms and makes them pop off the page.  I painted the petals with Glossy Accents when they were finished.

It's Hip to Be Square Challenge Frilly & Funkie 04“Butterflies are free” was a poster almost every teen had on her wall, so I had to add one to this composition.  Again, I used Heartfelt Creations dies that Linda is now carrying in her boutique.  This one was stamped, embossed and dipped into the same inky puddle as the background.  I used an Ideology pen nib for the butterfly body.   My sentiment is from Wendy Vecchi’s new Blooming Art stamp set, also in the shop.  Oh, and I had to add some crocheted lace, because nearly every girl I know got married in a dress that had crocheted lace somewhere…including this girl! I die cut a mini easel from chipboard and glued it to the back of the placard so that it can stand on its own.

And now the real fun begins, because YOU get to play along in this wonderful challenge! Just link up your own It’s Hip to be Square project on the Frilly and Funkie challenge blog. The winner will earn the chance to serve as Guest Designer at Frilly and Funkie, and everyone who enters and follows the rules will go into the draw for the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. And there are Top 3 Badges for three further outstanding entries, chosen by the Design Team, because choosing just one winner is so hard!

Let’s Make it A Trio Challenge at Frilly and Funkie

Cracked Glass Technique for Let’s Make it a Trio Challenge at Frilly and Funkie

Hello friends!  It’s time for another great challenge at the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog.  Sue is our hostess this go round,  and this is her theme: Let’s make it a trio!  She is challenging us to work in 3’s on a project, 3 tags, 3 panels, 3 arches etc…. so for this challenge create projects including 3 of something, but this does need to be the main focal point of your project.

Here’s my Let’s Make it a Trio project:

Let's Make it a Trio for Frilly and Funkie 01This was such a fun card to create!  I chose to work with Pion Design Paris Flea Market papers and they are soooo lush!  Now, how many three’s did I incorporate into my Let’s Make it a Trio design?

  • I die cut THREE of Tim’s Ornate Frames, then stacked them with adhesive foam to create a dimensional frame for my image, which was treated with THREE layers of UTEE, heat embossing between each layer.  I sprinkled in a few fine grains of glitter and embossing enamel so that the framed image would look like a very old photograph.  When the embossing had cooled completely, I gently bent it to crack it, giving it the look of cracked glass.
  • There are THREE loops on my woven black stripes linen
  • The linen is topped with 3 sweet Wild Orchid Craft blossoms
  • I used three different types of ribbon and trim (see the wrinkled pink ribbon and the white burlap string bow that is holding the bundle of love letters together?)
  • There are 3 fussy cut butterflies
  • There are also 3 postage stamps

So, I think I managed to meet Sue’s “Let’s Make it a Trio” Challenge

Here are some more photos for you to enjoy.

Let's Make it a Trio for Frilly and Funkie 05I achieved the crackle finish on my frame by painting it with Clear Rock Candy Distress Paint.  When it had dried, I spritzed it with a tincture of water and Vintage Photo Distress Ink.  I love this technique!

Let's Make it a Trio for Frilly and Funkie 04To give my bundle of love letters more body, I distressed the edges and added layers of torn paper behind the image from the Paris Flea Market ephemera.  Everything was inked up with Vintage Photo Distress Ink to make them look like letters found in an attic trunk, and then I added the real bow, burlap string and painted bird cage charm. The sweet little key from the Valentine Embellishment kit was tapped with Distress paint, and makes a lovely body on my butterfly.

Let's Make it a Trio for Frilly and Funkie 06The inside of the card uses THREE different papers from the paper collection and a lovely stamped quote from Wendy Vecchi’s brand new Blooming Art Stamp set.

Frilly & Funkie Layer it Up Challenge

Children’s Hour Pocket Card for Frilly & Funkie Layer it Up Challenge

Hello, Friends!  Welcome to the latest Frilly & Funkie Challenge.  Our hostess this go round is the shabbylicious NANCY who invites us to Layer it Up by creating a shabby chic or vintage project that includes multiple layers.  We invite you to play along with us, and link your own Layer it Up project to the Frilly & Funkie Blog.  The winner will earn the honor to serve as Guest Designer at Frilly and Funkie, and everyone who enters and follows the rules will go into the draw for the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. And there are Top 3 Badges for three further outstanding entries, chosen by the Design Team, because choosing just one winner is so hard! So without further ado, let’s Layer it Up!

Hello Spring card for Frilly Funkie Layer it Up Challenge 01These cold, dreary winter months have me longing for spring, so I chose to work with the March papers from Graphic 45’s gorgeous Children’s Hour collection.  The glorious gold and green hues make my heart happy, and I can almost hear the dandelions pushing through the soil as I write.

Hello Spring card for Frilly Funkie Layer it Up Challenge 04You can see there are loads of layers, stitching, distressing and embellishing on the card front.  I limited my color palette to green and gold to unify the design.

Hello Spring card for Frilly Funkie Layer it Up Challenge 03One tip for working with layers is to mat them on complementary cardstock.  I also try to vary the size of my prints by using a mix of large, medium and small prints.

Hello Spring card for Frilly Funkie Layer it Up Challenge 05In keeping with the Layer it Up! theme, I made sure I had plenty of layers on the inside of my card, too.

Hello Spring card for Frilly Funkie Layer it Up Challenge 06I love the look of white embossing on kraft cardstock.  And this stamp from the collection makes me feel like a kid again!  Remember the joy of swinging up into the springtime sky?

Hello Spring card for Frilly Funkie Layer it Up Challenge 08My layered pocket was made by tearing an ephemera card , stamping it with the sentiment and then stuffing it full of lovely tags and my favorite herbal tea.

Be sure to visit the F&F BLOG where you’ll be greatly inspired by the DT projects.  I hope you’ll join the fun with our Layer it Up Challenge!  I’ll be looking for you!
