Sweet Christmas Bird Gatefold Pop Out Card

Our first card is this darling Christmas Bird nestled in a circular frame.  Here are some quick and easy tips for putting this card front together.

  • First, paint an empty cardboard tape reel with white paint.
  • Next, adhere the frame over a portion of a 4×6 journal card.
  • Now, add some Buttons Galore and More goodies , handmade poinsettias and bows to dress up the frame.
  • Embellish with more buttons and a small tag.

You’ve just elevated the design of what is a very simple card front.

Gatefold Pop Out Element

Design a gatefold cover for the inside of the card.  Then mat your image on layers of cardstock and gold foil paper for a little  holiday sparkle.  Remember to only glue down the left hand side of your image, or you won’t be able to open the gate!

To create the gatefold portion of this card follow these simple steps:

  • First, cut a 10″ x 6 7/8″ panel of patterned paper.
  • Now score 2 1/2″ flaps on the right and left hand sides.  Fold to form the gates.
  • Place magnets on the right hand gate and on the back side of the front image to keep the gates closed.  You can cover up the magnet on the back side with a panel  of designer paper.

Surprise!  Add 4 small pop out panels to the interior of the gatefold.  If you’ve never made a pop out box before, you can find a tutorial HERE.

O Christmas Tree Shaker Card with a Pull Down/Pop Up Flap

Christmas is the perfect time to make a shaker card!  (Well, isn’t any time the perfect time to make a shaker card?)  You can make a custom frame for your card using rectangular nesting dies.  It’s super easy, and I’ll show you how in the video tutorial.

Y’all know I just love a good pop up element, so I added a fun pull down flap to the top of this card.  Spoiler alert:  There’s a pop up scene behind it!

Simple Stories Simple Vintage Yuletide Flip Folio: A Ghost of Christmas Past Project

Hello, Friends!  Today’s Simple Stories Simple Vintage Yuletide Flip Folio is the next installment in our Ghost of Christmas Past series.  I’m having the best time digging into my stash of older Christmas collections!  I hope you are enjoying this series as well.

This was probably my favorite paper collection from 2024, and I still love working with it!  If you don’t  have this particular collection in your stash, just use whatever you have on hand.  That’s kind of the point of this whole series.

While this is not a full step-by-step tutorial, you can find the basic measurements and score lines in the description box under my YouTube video.  Now let’s dig in and take a closer look at this festive folio.

Simple Construction

The folio base is made with 3 sheets of 8 1/2″ x 11″ cardstock that I joined together with Scor-Tape, then scored and folded.  It’s simple and quick to make, and I’ll show you how in the video.

Pockets, flaps and flips make this folio extra fun.

Lots of Room for Photos

Need room for photos?  This folio has LOTS of photo space.

Add easy to make waterfall elements as a great way to add photo space.  Then place ephemera journal cards beneath to provide lots of room for writing down favorite memories.

More Tunnel Cards with Stamperia Gear Up for Christmas:  My “Ghost of Christmas Past” Series

Hello, Friends!  Because I had so much fun making our Wonderful Wednesday Tunnel Cards, I’m back today with More Tunnel Cards made with Stamperia Gear Up for Christmas. If you missed that tutorial, you can find it HERE.

As I told you, I have probably enough Christmas paper to last me for the next 25 years.  I’m on a quest to liberate these gorgeous paper collections from the Closet of Inspiration and Delight (aka the Closet of Shame) and bring them to life.  My plan is to create and share as many projects as I can between now and Christmas.  I’m calling this my “Ghost of Christmas Past” series.

Wonderful Wednesday tutorials will feature the new paper collections I previewed HERE.  But in between I’ll share as many Ghost of Christmas Past projects as I can.  Sound good?

Stamperia Gear Up for Christmas Steampunk Mouse Tunnel Card

Y’all know I love a whimsical paper collection. The work of Farell Tailor, the designer responsible for Whispering Woods, Hidden Grove and Cozy Winter as well as Gear Up for Christmas.  While I enjoy steampunk, sometimes it can be a little dark for my tastes.  Farell has this amazing ability to infuse light, life, joy and whimsy into everything she creates.  And this paper collection is no exception!  I just love this dapper little Steampunk Mouse.  he makes me think of Dicken’s Oliver Twist character.  Can you see it?

Instead of using a circle die to cut the tunnels for this card, I used some nesting rectangle dies.  I actually found it a lot easier to add layers to this shape, so I’ll be sure to do it again!  The back of this card is also finished, and I’ll show it to you in the video below.

Steampunk Santa Arch Opening Tunnel Card

Steampunk Santa-Stamperia-Gear Up for Christmas-Tunnel Card-Kathy by Design

Next up in my tunnel card adventure, I tried using a Heartfelt Creations Eyelet Arch Die to cut the openings.  I love this Steampunk Santa, and I really like the effect that the arch shape provided.  And how ’bout those darling little mice?

TIP:  Mat each card layer on cardstock to create a really sturdy base.  Last time, I only added cardstock to the top and bottom layers.  I found it’s much better to mat all three layers of the card.

Steampunk Village Pocket Card

Naturally, once I’d completed the above cards, I had lots of scraps on my work desk.  On the spur of the moment I decided to create this 6×6 Pocket card.  Here’s how to make the base:

  • First, score a 6″ x 8 1/2″ panel of Brick Red cardstock on the long side at 6″.
  • Next, fold the 2  1/2″ flap up to form a pocket.
  • Now add 1″ x 2 1/4″ gussets to the sides, Voila! Pocket card base finished.
  • Line with kraft  and patterned paper of your choice.
  • Load the pocket up with a bookmark, tea, chocolate, and mini folio.

This makes a great gift!

Of course, I had to dress up the back side of the card, too.  Score a 5 3/4″ x 8″ panel of patterned paper at 5 3/4″, then fold the top flap down.  Dress it up as you like.

Add a cute little pop up element under the flap.  How fun is that?
