Beautiful Autumn Breeze Fall Banner Tutorial

Hello, Friends!  This beautiful Autumn Breeze Fall Banner Tutorial is our Wonderful Wednesday project of the week.  Rustic burlap pennants, handmade flowers, antique lace, and rich layered papers make it the perfect bit of fall home decor.

Handmade Sunflowers and Burlap Equals All the Fall Feels

Simple Stories -Autumn Breeze -Fall Banner -Tutorial -Kathy Clement-Kathy by Design

Rustic burlap pennants and handmade sunflowers really amp up the autumn vibe of this fall banner.  Stitch the pennants onto pretty tan gingham ribbon and top with vintage ivory lace to add even more texture to the design.

TIP: Mix and match handmade flowers on a die cut wreath.  Use a circle die to cut images from 4×6 journal cards and place in the center of the wreath.

Copper Tones

Copper tones add warmth and richness to any autumn project.  I’ve incorporated them on this banner in three ways:

  • First, tie bows with copper taffeta ribbon and add copper satin ribbon streamers to the bow clusters.
  • Next, paint antique bronze pumpkin embellishments with a little copper acrylic paint.  It’s amazing how that light coating of copper paint makes the pumpkins stand out!
  • Finally, spritz your floral papers with a bit of copper mist.  This is subtle, but oh, so beautiful!

If you’d like to see this banner come together, then I cordially invite you to grab a cuppa and a snack and join me over on my YouTube channel for the tutorial.

As I mentioned in the video, many of the flower dies I used are retired.  But I bet you have some beautiful flower dies tucked away in your stash.  Why not pull them out and use them to dress up your own beautiful banner?  If you don’t have any flower dies in your stash, I highly recommend Elizabeth Craft Designs as a source.  There’s a lot to choose from there.

You can find a linked supply list below this post.

I’ll be back next week with our Choose Your Own Adventure Card Tutorial of the Month.  I’m feeling a pop up card coming on….hope to see you then!

Ciao Bella Majestic Dream Mixed Media Home Decor Tutorial:  Wild Card Wonderful Wednesday

Hello, Friends!  It’s a Wild Card Wonderful Wednesday with a Ciao Bella Majestic Dream Mixed Media Home Decor Tutorial on the menu!  If you’re like me, and you like to get inky, try new techniques and create beautiful, inexpensive home decor, then this project is going to be right up your alley.

Even if you don’t like to create home decor items, there are lots of tips and techniques in today’s project that can be applied to card making, mini album embellishments or scrapbooking.

What are we making?

Ciao Bella Majestic Dream-Mixed Media Home Decor-Reneabouquets-Kathy Clement-Kathy by Design

Have you ever found a fairly ugly home decor piece in the mark down cart at the craft store?  I’m always tickled when I manage to score one of these diamonds in the rough, because I know I can use the basic “bones” in an altered art piece.

That’s the back story on this 7 1/2″ x 11 3/4″ x 1″ wooden sign.  The original artwork (which you will see in the tutorial) was less than inspiring.  But the piece itself was great.  Here’s how I gave it a whole new life:

  • First, trace the sign onto a piece of canvas cloth.  When you cut it out, cut slightly larger than the outline.  This way you can fringe the edges.
  • Next, gather a whole pile of pretty paper scraps and stitch them onto the canvas.  Glue this “paper quilt” onto the wooden sign base.
  • Now, dig through your stash of embellishments and dress it up.  This is so much fun!

I’ll show you how to create the background piece and lay out the embellishments in todays’ video tutorial.

A Closer Look at the Details

Reneabouquets Beautiful Board-Ciao Bella Majestic Dream-Kathy Clement-Kathy by Design

Y’all already know I ‘m a huge fan of Reneabouquets Beautiful Board.  You can alter it in so many different ways!  Ink it, heat emboss it, paint it, spatter it…or do all three as I have on this April in Paris doily.  Cut out a paper clock for the center, add a butterfly and you’ve got a mighty pretty page embellishment.

Add some stenciled shapes to your paper collage to create even more texture and visual interest.  Of course, fibers and flowers are always a good idea!

Rusty Keys-Ciao Bella Majestic Dream-Home Decor-Tutorial-Kathy Clement-Kathy by Design

TIP: When you fringe the canvas background, save the strings!  They make a great backdrop for some “rusty” wooden keys and beads.

Memory Place Lavender Love Easter Banner Tutorial for Wonderful Wednesday

Hello, Friends!  Cute bunnies take center stage in our Memory Place Easter Banner Tutorial for Wonderful Wednesday.  Of course you’ll find delicate spring blossoms, flirty butterflies and lots of Reneabouquets paper pretties here, too.  I had such a good time putting this month’s banner together.  Perhaps you’ll feel inspired to create a little springtime or Easter decor for  your home as well.

We’re working with Memory Place Lavender Love collection.  If you are not familiar with it, you can find a video tour HERE.  It fits in perfectly with our Bunnies and Blossoms theme for March.

Bunnies, Blossoms and Butterflies

I wish you could touch this banner to feel the contrasting textures: soft lace, crinkled satin, twisted baker’s twine,  and silky polka dot ribbons not only look pretty, but add a lovely tactile element to the banner design.  Of course, mulberry flowers add a wonderful splash of color and texture, too.

Here’s one of those cute bunnies I was telling you about.  Isn’t he handsome in his bed of spring posies?     Reneabouquets butterflies add another layer of texture, sparkle and dimension to the banner.

Feather Your Nest

I just had to add this pretty straw nest alongside my Reneabouquets shaker frame.  Filling the nest with tiny eggs, beads, feathers and flowers was lots of fun!

This cute bunny is the queen of the flower bed.  See her fancy crown?

TIP:  A G45 Tag and Pocket Die makes a wonderful pennant!  Simply cut the tabs off the sides.  Add gussets to the sides of the tag and turn it into a pocket that holds one of the little journal cards.

I’ll be back next week with our Choose Your Own Adventure Card Tutorial of the Month.  We’ll be working with both Memory Place Peter’s Garden and Lavender Love.  It should be lots of fun.

Home Baker Altered Kitchen Tray Tutorial

Prima The Home Baker Altered Kitchen Tray Tutorial for Home Decor Wonderful Wednesday

Hello, Friends!  It’s Home Decor Wonderful Wednesday, and I have a darling Home Baker Altered Kitchen Tray Tutorial to share with you today.  I picked this 10″ x 7″ x 1″ balsa wood tray up from a yard sale for practically free.  It was not very attractive but it had great lines.  It’s been tucked away in the Closet of Inspiration and Delight for quite some time, just waiting for a chance to be transformed.

The original tray was pretty “blah” with just a coat of off white paint and a Christmas card glued in the center.  But I wanted to create a vintage looking, distressed, “chippy” base for these vintage style papers.  I’ll show you the steps I followed in the video tutorial below.

I hope you’ll enjoy watching the process and be inspired to alter something from your own crafty stash.

Pretty and Practical

Since we live in a fairly small home, I like to create home decor items that have a practical use.  As you can see in this photo, the simple addition of a small, chunky clothespin allowed me to turn this tray into a recipe card holder.  It can “lean” on your countertop, hang on the wall, or be displayed on a shelf.  But when you need to bake something yummy, simply clip your recipe to the front of the tray.

Of course, if you don’t want to use it for recipes, just leave off the clip!  It’s still mighty cute.

Recipe Card Storage

How about a lovely little pocket on the bottom of the tray to hold some of your “go to” recipes?  When this idea popped into my head, it made me very happy, indeed!

If  you are fortunate enough to have The Home Baker recipe cards (boy, did they ever disappear quickly!) they look great tucked into the pocket.  But you could always alter 4×6 index cards with patterned paper on one side and room for recipes on the other.

Would you like to watch the process involved in creating today’s home decor project?  Then please grab a cuppa and a snack, put your feet up, get cozy, and enjoy!

Now we’ll all be scouring yard sales and thrift shops for cute little trays, right?

What’s Coming Up in February?

Several of you have asked me to share more tutorials with this Home Baker Collection.  So I think I am going to go with that.  We’ll use this collection for one more month, and we will also create our Graphic 45 Season to Celebrate card folio using the Spring Season papers.  Sound like fun?

Prima Marketing The Home Baker Banner Tutorial with Reneabouquets

Hello, Friends!  It’s Wonderful Wednesday and I have a darling The Home Baker Banner Tutorial to share with you.  I can’t remember the last time I worked with a paper collection this whimsical and adorable.  It makes me think of the “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” children’s book, only sweeter.  Let’s take a closer look, shall we?

Mason Jars

The Home Baker Banner Tutorial-Kathy Clement-Kathy by Design

Did you know I have a “thing” for Mason jars?  Well, I do!  I store everything from dried goods to leftovers to seashells to buttons in them, and the older they are, the more I like them! So I had to feature the lovely Mason Jar ephemera bits on this banner.

Baking Mice

Prima-The home Baker-Banner Tutorial-Reneabouquets-Kathy Clement-Kathy by Design

Squeeeek!  What else can I say about this adorable little mouse in her stripey jacket and stylish scarf?  This image is fussy cut from the 12×12 paper collection, backed with foam tape and layered with some sweet posies and an old cookbook page.  Do you spy the chocolate chip cookies?

This darling mouse is wearing a very fashionable bakers cap.  Also cut from the 12×12 paper pad, she’s hurrying to the kitchen with a jar full of sugar cubes.  So precious!

The Shaker Frame

If you look closely in this shaker element, you’ll find itty bitty kitchen utensils mixed in with the buttons, beads and sequins.  The frame is a gorgeous Reneabouquets shell frame (linked below).  I also used an April in Paris Doily on the end pieces in this banner, as well as some gorgeous butterflies.

Photographing these big banners is a challenge, but here’s a look at all 7 pennants.
