Kaisercraft Cherry Tree Lane Vintage Style Card for Throwback Thursday

Hello, Friends!  For this week’s Throwback Thursday post, I have a Kaisercraft Cherry Tree Lane Vintage Style Card to share with you.  There’s no tutorial this week, but I’ll share lots of helpful tips and tricks as we take a look at this lovely card.

Thoughts on Friendship

Do you remember your first childhood friend?  I do.  Her name was Robin, and we were born in the same year.  She was born in March.  I was born in July.  She lived at the bottom of the hill.  I lived at the top of the hill.  But we both had 4 siblings and a dog.  Her’s was a big old furry sheepdog.  Ours was a mutt.

I don’t remember how we met, but we were both probably playing outside as kids used to do back when you only had 3 channels on the TV, no cell phones, and no computers to keep you inside.  How lucky we were to be able to live free of these distractions from the great outdoors!

Robin and I became best friends immediately.  We played together every single day.  If it was raining, we played indoors, but mostly we played outside, riding our bikes, playing kick ball with the other kids on the hill, jumping rope, and pushing out baby dolls down the dirt road in their strollers.  In the winter, we built amazing snow forts in the huge piles left behind from the snow plows.  These had multiple stories, carved staircases and even furniture that we shaped from the packed snow.  It’s funny how the cold does not bother you when you are a kid.

We walked to school together every single day.  When the county built a “big school” we waited at the bus stop together and sat in the same seat.  We fought, forgave, got into mischief and were as close as sisters.  Even in high school, we still waited for the bus together and talked almost every day, even though our paths were by then heading in different directions.

Fast Forward to the Present

Then we both grew up and I moved away and we lost touch.  Oddly enough, I managed to stay in touch with Robin’s little sister via Facebook.  She contacted me in early March to let me know that Robin, who had been ill for quite some time, had passed away.

All these bittersweet memories came flooding back to me.  Today, my heart is full of gratitude.  How blessed I was to have had such a wonderful childhood friend.  Robin will live forever in my heart.

I made this card for the family and wrote a note with my memories of Robin to tuck inside.  When you lose someone you love, it helps to ease the sense of loss when you know others are feeling it, too.

Kaisercraft Cherry Tree Lane Vintage Style Card: Tips and Tricks

Since I was working mostly with scraps of this collection, I had to get creative.  Here are some helpful tips.

  • The background panel of this card is actually two long pieces laid side by side with the seam in the middle.
  • Mat lots of small panels on complementary cardstock.  This way, you can build layers, and cover the seam.
  • Cut an ephemera piece in half.  Layer half at the top, half on the bottom.  This extra layer covers the seam at the top and bottom of the card.
  • Die cut layers from cream cardstock to lighten up the card, and provide visual interest.  Since I had not larger focal images from the collection, this was a good substitute.
  • Pop a small fussy cut cluster of flowers up on an ephemera frame.  Surround it with flowers, ribbon and buttons to draw the eye to the center of the card.
  • Adhere cream flat back pearls to the die cut layer.  This adds to the vintage feel of the card and provides texture and shine.

  • Now cover the inside of the card with patterned papers.
  • Then cut a border sticker into 2 pieces.  Attach one at the top to cover a “short” panel of paper.
  • Next, trim around the rest of the border sticker and adhere on the bottom.  Trim around the straight cut edges to give it a more organic look.
  • Finally, sand around an ephemera tag.  Adhere just the bottom edge to create a tuck spot.  This is where you can insert your  hand written note.

If you had a best friend growing up, take a moment to give thanks for all the life lessons that friendship taught you.  I’m a better person today because Robin was my friend.  I’m thankful.

Thanks for stopping by!

Winter Blues Christmas Folio

Winter Blues Christmas Folio for the Really Reasonable Ribbon Blog Hop

Hello, Friends!  Welcome to the RRR December Blog Hop!  You should be coming here from Karen’s lovely blog.   Today’s project is a Winter Blues Christmas Folio made with Kaisercraft “Frosted” and the Winter Blues Ribbon Club Assortment from Really Reasonable Ribbon.

Winter Blues Christmas Folio Kaisercraft Frosted by Kathy Clement for Really Reasonable Ribbon Photo 01

Is there any color combo that’s more wintry than blue and white?  Once again, I pulled out my few remaining bits and bobs of Kaisercraft Frosted to play alongside this scrumptious 5/8″ Porcelain Diamond Satin Ribbon.  Combined with a little Silver Metallic String it really makes the design on the front of this 7″ x 5″ folio pop!

The folio is wrapped with another length of Porcelain Diamond Satin.  Leave the tails long to serve as the closure for the folio.

Winter Blues Christmas Folio: The Bow Cluster

I used my Zutter Bow-it-All Tool to tie this 3 1/2″ double loop bow and the 4 loop metallic string bow.  If you struggle with tying bows, I really recommend this tool.  I use it every time I craft because using it is like having an extra pair of hands in the studio.

To complete the bow cluster, string two silver glitter jingle bells on more metallic string.  Tie a knot to keep them from slipping off.  Then add a small dab of hot glue to the top of your bow cluster and place the knotted string in the glue.  Immediately add the Little Birdie Margery Ivory Flower on top to hold the jingle bells in place.

This is a very simple folio design and is almost identical to the folio I made a while back with Garden Goddess.   The left hand side hosts an 8 page waterfall.  On the right, there’s a little pocket with goodies tucked inside.

Each of the eight pages in the waterfall measures 4″ x 4 3/4″.  To hold everything closed, I devised a little magnetic belly band.  (These cute die cut silhouettes are from Spellbinders..and they are on sale right now! )

You can fit 16 photos inside the waterfall feature.

I’ve decorated the pages with tuck spots and  flaps for journaling and extra fun.

Winter Blues Christmas Folio: The Pocket

The side pocket is filled with this sweet little tea bag/gift card wallet, a hand crocheted ivory snowflake and a honey stick.

Here’s a look at the empty pocket, with the same sweet couple from the cover of the folio.  There’s room for photos, recipes or other goodies here.

I have a tutorial for this folio base made with another collection HERE.

On with the hop!

From here, hop on over and see what sweet creations the delightful Linsey has in store for you.  You can find the complete hop list on the RRR Blog.  And you will want to visit all the blogs so your name is entered in the drawing for your very own Winter Blues Ribbon Assortment.

Thanks so much for hopping! If you are interested in purchasing this folio, you can find it in my ETSY shop.  I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below.

Frosted Memories Vintage Style Christmas Card Folio

Frosted Memories Vintage Style Christmas Card Folio for Really Reasonable Ribbon

Hello, Friends!  Do you ever travel back in time when you are crafting?  While creating this Frosted Memories Vintage Style Christmas Card Folio, I found myself back in my childhood home.  The hill we lived on in Vermont was a long, steep dirt road.  And when winter rolled in, the hill would come alive with kids bundled up in snow gear waiting to take a thrilling sled ride to the bottom. We would zip down with the snow flying back in our faces, whooping with delight until we steered off into a snowbank to stop ourselves.  Then we’d trudge all the way back up that hill, pulling our sleds behind us, our breath freezing in the air like plumes of smoke.  And we never got cold.  Oh, those were fun times!

I tried to capture the joy of those times, and the shimmering snow in this 5″ x 7″ x 1/2″ card folio made with Kaisercraft Frosted. (retired..but you can still find some HERE.)  If you’d like to see other ways I’ve used this lovely collection, you can find past projects HERE.

Frosted Memories Vintage Style Christmas Card Folio: The Ribbons

The Winter Blues Ribbon Club Assortment from RRR had the perfect playmates for this card.   I layered up some White Delicate Stitched Satin Ribbon with 3/8″ Porcelain with Silver Edge in the bow cluster.  Isn’t it dreamy?

If you are new to tying bows, I highly recommend Delicate Stitched Satin.  It is easy to work with, and ties the prettiest bows!

White Crochet Lace from the assortment makes me think of a delicate snowflake.  I love seeing it peek out from behind the little sentiment.

Creating this little woodland scene was so much fun!  I asked our clever son to cut me some small, thin wood slices in his workshop.  And he was happy to oblige!  here’s how I created this woodland scene.

I know it sounds like a lot of steps, but it actually comes together faster than it takes to write it out!

Do you spot the ribbon inside this card?  I’ve covered the 1/2″ spine area with 3/8″ Blue Topaz/Light Silver Diamond Grosgrain Ribbon.  This is also from the ribbon club assortment.

I liked it so much, I used it again to decorate the belly band on this tea bag wallet.

And I used it to decorate the honey stick that goes with this Earl Grey Tea Bag.

I loaded this nostalgic beauty into my Etsy shop, and if you hurry, it might still be there!

I hope I’ve shared some tips, techniques and ideas that you can use in your own crafty adventures.  If so, I’d love to hear from you in the comment section below.

Santa Claus is Watching Shaker Card

Santa Claus is Watching Shaker Card with Kaisercraft Frosted

Hello, Friends!  You know that saying, “Make new friends, but keep the old?”  Well, I’ve been making friends with some of the older collections in my stash.  This Santa Claus is Watching Shaker Card is made with Kaisercraft’s Frosted Collection.  (See more Frosted HERE.) I was thrilled to find that I still had quite a lot of these lovely blue and white papers, so I went to work creating some sweet Christmas goodies that I’ll be sharing with you all this month.  Since I love shaker cards and vintage Santa images, this shaker card might be my favorite.

This card may look complicated, but it’s actually a super simple design.  The secret to its success is the shaker element and the gorgeous florals from Little Birdie Crafts.

Santa Claus is Watching Shaker card Kaisercraft Frosted by Kathy Clement Photo 02

  • Begin by creating a 5″ x 7″ side fold card from ivory cardstock.
  • Then cut a 4 7/8″ x 6 7/8″ panel of Silver Sparkle Cardstock from My Favorite Things.
  • Next cut a 4 5/8″  x 6 5/8″ panel of the Vintage Santa pattern from Frosted.  Stitch this to the Silver Sparkle Cardstock.

That’s it…one layer of designer paper stitched to a layer of glitter cardstock.  I love this Silver Sparkle paper because the glitter is sealed into the paper, so nothing flakes off.  It’s wonderful stuff.

Santa Claus is Watching Shaker Card: The Shaker Element

Use a blending tool to cover a  3 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ Tim Holtz Vignette Frame with Iced Spruce Distress Oxide Ink.  You will have to really grind that ink into the crevices.  Then spray the frame with Brushed Pewter Distress Stain Spray.

TIP:  Place the frame in an old box before spraying for easy clean-up.

Heat dry the frame.  Then use a palette knife to add Ranger Opaque Crackle Texture Paste along the edges to resemble snow.  While the texture paste is still wet, sprinkle it with Distress Clear Rock Candy Dry Glitter.  Then set the window aside to dry for a while.

Next, cut (2) 3 1/4″ x 4 1/4″ panels of clear acrylic cardstock.   When the frame is completely dry, adhere one piece on the back of the frame.  Then add 2 layers of foam tape along the edges of the frame, making sure the tape does not show through the window, or on the sides. Fill this space with sequins, beads or whatever you like.  then seal it with the second piece of clear acrylic cardstock.

You will then glue this whole assembly over Santa’s face.  Let it set up completely before you continue.

TIP:  to hide the white sides of the foam tape beneath the frame, I wrapped the perimeter with 1/4″ black gingham ribbon.  Tie a bitty bow on top.

I arranged an assortment of Little Birdie Flowers along the side of the frame.  These are painted with Ranger Grit-Paste and sprinkled with Rajni Chawla’s Frosted Glitter.  The flowers I used are: Sangria English Roses, Paulina Candy Mix, and Audria Passion 9 Pc.  The ribbon is tied with RRR Black Plaid.

I picked up this chipboard sentiment at a crafty stash sale.  It was already painted red, but to give it a bit more holiday sparkle, I brushed on some Xmas Red Stickles.

Eileen Hull Passport Mini with Kaisercraft Anthology

Natural Beauty: Eileen Hull Passport Mini with Kaisercraft Anthology Collection

Hello, Friends!  Wow, this has been a busy month for me!  Earlier this month, I shared some projects that I made “just for me.”  This Eileen Hull Passport Mini with Kaisercraft Anthology Collection was made during that time, but i simply haven’t had time to share it with you until now.

Eileen Hull Passport Mini with Kaisercraft Anthology Collection by Kathy Clement Photo 01

Made in a “junk journal” fashion, this 3.5″ x 5″  mini has a 1.5″ spine.  I cannot even begin to tell you how much fun I had making it.  There’s something so relaxing about creating a junk journal.  You get to dig through your stash, use loads of embellishments and texture and basically, have a blast.

Eileen’s Passport Mini  is a Sizzix XL Die.  It cuts covers, spine and inner pages.

The directions for binding the album come with the die, and you can find loads and loads of wonderful samples and tutorials on Eileen’s Blog.  I also share a lot of tips in the video tour below.

Eileen Hull Passport Mini with Kaisercraft Anthology Collection: Creating the Signature Pages

Eileen Hull Passport Mini with Kaisercraft Anthology Collection by Kathy Clement Photo 03

The signature covers are decorated, but the inner pages are acid free resume paper that I died with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.  Here’s how:

  • Die cut pages using the Eileen Hull Passport Die.  Use a Sizzix crease pad to prevent the die from cutting all the way through the papers.  The die will crease the pages and punch out the binding holes at the same time.
  • Swipe Vintage Photo Distress Ink directly onto your non-stick craft mat.  Spritz with water until little beads and droplets begin to form.
  • Place the die cut pages into this luscious inky puddle and swipe them through.
  • You may have to repeat this process several times to ink up all the pages.
  • When all the pages have been inked, iron them flat with an iron on the “low” setting.
  • Now you have a lovely stack of stained papers to add to your passport mini signatures.
Eileen Hull Passport Mini with Kaisercraft Anthology Collection: Natural Beauty Vignettes

Little nature vignettes decorate the cover of each signature. Some elements are fussy cut images from the Anthology Collection Kit.  You will see that I used the Graphic 45 Square Tag and Clock Dies in several spots.  That clock frame is sooo useful!

Other items have been in my stash for so long, I don’t even know where they came from.   I also used lots of images and elements from  the 6.5″ x 6.5″ Anthology Paper Pad.  Kaisercraft also makes little ephemera bits that they call “Collectables” for this collection.

I’ve incorporated lots of natural elements, like this lichen I picked up at a local park, leaves, Spanish Moss and feathers to add to the natural, organic feel of the album.

Eileen Hull Passport Mini with Kaisercraft Anthology Collection: Flips and Flaps

You all know how much I love to add interactive elements to my creations as often as possible.  This little mini is no exception.  There are flips and flaps galore!

You can find many of the metal charms I’ve used at the Funkie Junkie Boutique.

Eileen Hull Passport Mini with Kaisercraft Anthology Collection Video Tour: Tips, Tricks & Ideas

I always find it helpful to view a video of a project like this.  It helps you gain a sense of the size, depth, dimension and function of all the mechanisms.  You’ll find photos that I did not share in this post along with lots of ideas that will be helpful if you decide to make your own Passport Mini Album.  Enjoy!
