Ciao Bella Into the Wild Altered Mini Album in a Box

Ciao Bella Into the Wild Altered Mini Album in a Box Tutorial Part 1

Hello, Friends!  Today I’m starting a two-part tutorial for this Ciao Bella Into the Wild Altered Mini Album in  Box project.  We’ll make the altered book box today, then on Thursday we’ll make the mini album to go inside.

A Walk in the Autumn Woods

Growing up in Vermont, our family would often go for a weekend walk in the autumn woods. With a blazing blue sky over our heads, crunchy leaves under our feet and brilliant fall colors all around us, it was like taking a walk in Heaven.  Leaves gently floated down to the ground as light breezes blew, and you could hear the sound of tiny creatures scurrying around under the cover of pine needles and fallen foliage.

When I saw this paper collection, it took me right back to those glorious rambling adventures, and I could not resist adding this collection to the Closet of Inspiration and Delight.

Mixed Media Prep

Speaking of the Closet of Inspiration and Delight, that’s where I found this Papier Mache book box.  I think I picked it up at a yard sale some time ago for a few pennies and tucked it away until inspiration came knocking.  And it did knock, eventually!

This mixed media adventure began by painting the edges of the box (inside and out) with Gathered Twigs Distress Paint.  Each step in this process takes a few minutes longer than usual, because you have to let each color of paint dry before you move to the next one. Here’s the  process:

  • First, paint all the edges and corners inside and out with Gathered Twigs Distress Paint.
  • Next, paint a smaller section of the edges and corners with Antique Bronze Distress Paint. Brush the section of the box that would be the gilt “page ends” with a more generous coat.
  • Now, randomly dry brush the edges with Ancient Brass Distress Paint.  Use an old, stiff paint brush on the page ends to create the illusion of page ends.
  • Let everything dry thoroughly, then apply Ground Espresso Distress Ink to the cover, spine and back cover.
  • Apply Prima Clear Gesso to the covers, spine and page ends (the sides).
  • Let everything dry thoroughly.
Cover Art Prep

Stitch a 4 3/4″ x 7″ panel of the green plaid paper to a 5 1/8″ x 7 3/8″ panel of the orange ledger pattern. Distress the edges and ink with Ground Espresso.

Fussy cut the images and small leaves, etc. to cluster around the squirrel and the window.

You can watch this process in this YouTube video;

I’ll be back on Thursday with a tutorial for an easy to make mini album to tuck inside the box.

Do you like this paper collection as much as I do?  Working with it is making me very happy!

Graphic 45 October Flower Market Folio Tutorial with Prima Hello, Pink Autumn

Hello Friends!  It’s time to share our Graphic 45 October Flower Market Tutorial for this week’s Make & Take Tuesday crafty adventure.  If you are a fan of Cosmos (and I am) and purple (yup…that, too) then I think you are going to love the way this month’s folio turned out.  It’s one of our prettiest folios yet!

Our “guest star” this month is a selection of Prima Hello, Pink Autumn papers and a few bits from Prima Darcelle.  I’m so happy with the way these colors and patterns blend togeher.  And because it is October, I had to add in a few pumpkins.

The format for the base design is the same as in previous months.  If you’ve missed those earlier tutorials, you can get caught up HERE.

Flips and Flaps

I’ve added a couple of new twists to the flips and flaps this month.  It’ s good to change things up a little bit every now and then.

A flip up flap is more than just a fun interactive feature; it gives us room to add a hidden journaling area.  You’ll also find that I made good use of Annette Green’s Everythings Blooming Doilies and Postage Stamp Frames throughout the folio design.

Cosmos were one of my mom’s favorite flowers, so making this folio brought back lots of good memories for me.

We only have 2 more of these folios to make!  Wow, this year has gone by fast!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friends!

Simple Stories Little Things Box Pocket Folio Tutorial

Simple Stories Little Things Box Pocket Folio Tutorial for Make & Take Tuesday

Hello, Friends!  I’m a little late getting this Simple Stories Little Things Box Pocket Folio Tutorial out to you for today’s Make & Take Tuesday.  I took a couple of days off over the weekend because I was tired!  It felt good to get caught up on laundry, read a book, go for a drive and relax for a bit.  Even though I’m late getting this out today, I think you will still really enjoy the project.  It’s a darling little box style folio  that’s really easy to make.

Transitioning a Summer Collection into a Fall Project

Simple Stories Little Things Box Folio Kathy Clement

Little Thing is technically a summer collection filled with lemon images, and soft summer colors.  But I didn’t get the collection until summer was nearly over, and even then I didn’t have time to use it…until now.  I needed to find a way to make this summery collection feel appropriate for the current season.

So I focused on the yellow gold, black and red tones, plaid patterns and used just a touch of floral papers.  I think it worked really well.  If you die cut the  shaker frame from yellow gold cardstock, back with strips of black cardstock and accent with the cute black floral teapot, it really sells the changing of the seasons.  Or at least, I think it does.  What do you think?

A Peek Inside: Flip Flap Folio

This is a very easy folio base to create, but easy doesn’t mean boring.  It’s loaded with fun flips and flaps.

There’s even a hidden pocket behind the gatefold closure.

And a fun mini waterfall feature, too!

The Box Pocket

The box pocket is scored into the folio base design so it’s super quick and easy to make: just add the sides!  Then you can fill it up with cute goodies like cookies, a vintage demitasse spoon, ladybug tag, honey stick and a mini folio.

There’s room inside the mini folio to add a Pumpkin Spice tea bag…which also  helps with the seasonal transition!

NOTE:  Embedding the videos into my blog has been using too much disk space and costing me too much money.  So I’ll be linking to my YouTube channel instead of embedding from now on.  Thanks for understanding!

Graphic 45 Flower Market September Folio Tutorial

Graphic 45 Flower Market September Folio Tutorial-Authentique Stitches-Kathy Clement-Kathy by Design

Graphic 45 Flower Market September Folio Tutorial

Hello, Friends!  For this week’s Make and Take Tuesday, I have our Graphic 45 Flower Market September Folio Tutorial ready to share with you.  This is the 9th folio in  this year-long series!  Can you even believe it? If you are new to the blog, you can catch up on the previous 8 months of folio tutorials HERE.

Asters are the featured flower for our September folio, and they are so pretty paired up with Cloudy Sky and Dune cardstock!  Once again, our folio measures 8 1/2″ square with 3/8″ spines, internal flaps, pockets and flip pages.

Authentique Stitches Guest Star of the Month

Our “guest star” for the month of September is the Stitches collection from Authentique.  The pinks and blue hues are the perfect complement to the G45 papers. While the basic folio design is the same as in previous months, I did alter the design of the top flap page just a little.  You know me…I get bored if I do the same thing all the time!

In addition to the G45 dies that we’ve been using every month, I invited my Annette Green Everyday Elements dies to the party.  I’ll list the borders, flourishes, postage stamp and doily dies in the supply list below.

Of course, if you don’t have Stitches or the dies in your stash, please feel free to substitute goodies from your stash.  It always feels good to use a product that’s been languishing in the Closet of Inspiration and Delight, don’t you agree?

Pockets and Mini Folios

Don’t  you love the way the Authentique papers blend with the Flower Market florals?

Flowers and sewing are two of my favorite crafting themes, so I really enjoyed putting this month’s folio together for you.  I hope you’ll have as much fun with it as I did.

Craft Room Organization Tips: Ribbon Storage Solutions

Hello, Friends!  For this week’s Make and Take Tuesday, I’m inviting you into my studio for some Craft Room Organization Tips.  I’m constantly in the process of rearranging my studio to make everything fit and flow together smoothly.  During a recent clean out of my cloth bins, I ran across some product packaging that made that proverbial light bulb in my brain light up.  I was so pleased with the results that I just had to share the idea with you here.

Today’s tips will focus on ribbon storage solutions.  We’ll take a look at 3 or 4 different ways that I organize and store my ribbon, baker’s twine and thread.  I hope you’ll pick up some helpful ideas along the way!

My New Idea

Ribbon Storage Rack-Kathy Clement-Kathy by Design

Do you struggle to keep lace and trims neat and organized?

TIP: Repurpose product packaging for ribbon storage.  This Graphic 45 Metal Staples packaging is sturdy, has a hanger hole, and is cute, too. Wind sections of lace around the tag. Then secure the lace to the tag with quilting pins, safety pins or little hooks. Add a hanger hook to the top and suspend from a dowel rod.  Now your lace bits are easy to find, protected and compactly stored. It’s always a happy day when I can find a way to repurpose product packaging!

Did you enjoy walking through my ribbon storage ideas with me?  Would you be interested in more craft room storage solutions videos in the future?  Let me know what  you think in the comment section below, friends, and I’ll try to tackle your questions.

That’s it for me today!  Thanks for stopping by!
