Authentique Solitude Winter Survival Kit Tutorial and Video Tour

Hello, Friends! Winter can be such a tough time of year. So I thought I’d brighten up your day with this Authentique Solitude Winter Survival Kit Tutorial. It’s the perfect way to chase away the winter blues, send a bit of love to a friend who’s down with the flu, or just to let a loved one know they are in your thoughts.

This fancy fold card design is adapted from a tutorial I saw on Ginny’s YouTube channel. I fell in love with the basic design, but thought of some fun ways to change it up and add my own KBD style to it. (You can find another example of this card design HERE.)

Please don’t let this card design intimidate you, as it is really very simple to make. This time, I created a 6″ x 6″ card base with a 1″ side fold spine. Then I added a 5″ x 5″ card base with a 1″ spine on the right. This forms the fun gatefold/flap feature on the front of the card. So if you can make a basic side fold card base, you are already more than half way there!

Winter Survival Kit Tutorial: Some Details

Add extra volume and texture to your card design by hot gluing some cheesecloth behind a die cut panel. The lacy appearance of this Spellbinder’s Floral Assortment Nestabilities Die added a snowy feel to the card design.
To strengthen the delicate edges of this die, emboss with clear embossing powder. It’s amazing how much stronger the delicate points are after this treatment.
Add some fun dimension by curling the “winter greetings” sentiment against the edge of a ruler. Then adhere just the ends with hot glue.

Add snowy accents to your card by spattering it with diluted white acrylic paint.

Winter Survival Kit Tutorial: A Peek Inside

I absolutely love the drama of unfolding this style of fancy fold card!

Decorate the side panels with elements from the paper collection. I carried the winter bird theme inside the card by wrapping the cardstock elements image with burlap string and a rusty snowflake.

When the card is fully opened, the Winter Survival Kit is revealed. This is a 4″ x 2″ box style pocket filled with goodies to make winter more bearable.

Tuck in a teabag, some pocket sized tissues, a chapstick, some hand cream and a honey stick. That’s sure to brighten up someones day!

I wrapped the back side of the card and the spine with 1 1/2″ wide Ivory Silky Crush Ribbon to add texture, shine and elegance to the design.

Winter Survival Kit Tutorial Cutting Guide

For the 6″ x 6″ card base:

13″ x 6″ panel of brown cardstock (you can join two panels of cardstock together with Scor-Tape.)
- Score this panel at 3″ , 6″ and 7″
Cut mats from designer paper:
- 5 7/8″ x 5 7/8″ (2)
- 2 7/8″ x 5 7/8″ (4)
- Spine 7/8″ x 5 7/8″ (2)

For the 5″ x 5″ card base:

11″ x 5″ panel of brown cardstock
- Score this at 5″ and 6″
Cut mats from designer paper
- 4 7/8″ x 4 7/8″ (3)
- 7/8″ x 4 7/8″ (2)

For the box pocket:

8″ x 4″ panel of brown cardstock
- Score on long side at 1″, 2″, 6″, 7″
- Score on short side at 2″, 3″
To cover the finished pocket
- 5 7/8″ x 1 7/8″ panel of designer paper scored on long side at 1″, 4 7/8″
- 4 7/8″ x 7/8″ panel to line the bottom of the box
