Vintage Hollywood Born to Be a Star Photo Display Box

#UpcycleG45:  Vintage Hollywood Born to Be a Star Photo Display Box

Hello, G45’ers!  Have you joined the fun #UpcycleG45 challenge yet this month?  Since I love to turn trash into treasure, I could not resist playing along.  I dug out some G45 packaging, a salvaged ribbon spool and gorgeous papers from Vintage Hollywood and went to work on this Vintage Hollywood Born to Be a Star Photo Display Box.  I have loads and loads of photos and tips to share with you today, so go grab a cuppa and a snack and we’ll get started!

My mom loved the old black and white movies.  I can remember spending many a Saturday afternoon snuggled up on the couch watching Tarzan and Jane, Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn or Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall movies with her.  The Vintage Hollywood collection captures all the glitz and glam of that wonderful era of classic movie making, and I tried to create that same feel in this Born to Be a Star Photo Display Box.

Ready on the Set!

Before you start cutting paper for your Born to Be a Star Photo Display Box, you’ll want to do the following:

  • Paint the Kraft Mixed Media Box with Black Chalk paint.  If you have a Black Mixed Media box, you can skip this step.  My box was kraft, so I needed to paint.  I like to use chalk paint because it is less “wet” than acrylic or Distress paints.  Not only does it dry quicker, it is less likely to warp .
  • Paint the edges of the packaging tags and the mixed media box inserts as well as the ribbon spool.
Roll ’em!

Star Power!

To create a dynamic background for this dimensional piece, I fussy cut these gorgeous vintage style stars from the 12×12 paper collection and edged them with Gathered Twigs Distress ink.  I love the way these stars emphasize the Patterns and Solids paper that I used to cover my box, as well as the stars in the chipboard frame.

Makeup!

Every starlet needs a little scarlet lipstick, right?  To add that punch of color to the shabby chic Ornate Door Plate and Knob, I tapped them with Terra Cotta and Red Pepper Alcohol Inks.  Apply black chalk paint along the edges to really make them pop.  Just tap it on with your fingertip.

The tags rest in a little open box that I built from waste chipboard.  This is such a great way to add height and dimension to a project.

Dressed for Success

You can store photos on both the front and back side of the inserts that come with the box. Dress them up with ATC Policy Envelopes, paper scraps and fussy cut elements.

Layer images and fussy cuts over these ATC Policy Envelopes.  You can add more photos inside the envelope, or use them as a hidden journaling spot.

Create a hinge from a 1″ wide piece of black cardstock and fold it in half.  Glue one half to the back of the policy envelope and the other half to the photo mount.  Now you can mount a full sized photo on each card.  How cool is that?

Dress up the back side with Patterns and Solids.  Glue just the edges so that you can slip photos behind.  You’ll have plenty of room to store more photos in the box, too.

That’s a Wrap!

Graphic 45 Vintage Hollywood Four Fold Folder Folio Tutorial for Frilly & Funkie         “You’ve Got to Know When to Fold ’em” Challenge

Hello, Friends!  Welcome to another fabulous challenge at the Frilly and Funkie Blog!  I’m the hostess this month, so I got to choose the theme.  Hooray!   I love to create all kinds of fancy fold cards and folios and the “You’ve Got to Know When to Fold “em” theme reflects that. Graphic 45’s brand spankin’ new Vintage Hollywood collection has been calling to me, so I created this Four Fold Folio tutorial to share with you today.  Before we start, let’s take a look at the details for this fun challenge.

Challenge Theme: You’ve Got to Know When to Fold ‘Em
This challenge is all about using folded paper in a way that goes beyond just folding it in half. Create a vintage or shabby chic project that uses folded paper in a way that elevates the design. You can make a fancy fold card, or add folded embellishments to a card or layout.

The one and only Wendy Vecchi was gracious enough to share her new 2017 CHA releases with the team, so we have been featuring her products in our three latest challenges.  It’s been really fun to see how Wendy’s products work with each individual team member’s unique style and perspective.  If you have Wendy products in your stash, we’d love for you to use them as you play along, however it is not required.

Go grab a drink and a snack to sustain you.  Tutorials tend to be long posts with lots of photos.  I don’t want you to faint!

A One Sheet Wonder

Graphic 45 Vintage Hollywood Four Fold Folio Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Frilly and Funkie Photo 1 This folio is a “one sheet wonder” meaning that the entire folio base can be made using just one sheet of 12×12 cardstock.  I find it amazing that you can fit pockets, tags, and a waterfall feature into a folio made from one sheet of cardstock!  The best thing about this sort of album is that you can easily complete it in a day or less.

Graphic 45 Vintage Hollywood Four Fold Folio Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Frilly and Funkie Photo 2Paper dolls were a favorite childhood toy for me, so I was thrilled to receive Wendy’s wonderful Paper Doll  in my design team package of goodies.   The set comes with a lovely cling stamp of this beautiful vintage lady and a matching stencil.  You can use just the stamp, of course, but it’s so much more fun to invite the stencil to the party!  Of course you can use texture paste through the stencil.  You can also use the stencil as a template to trace onto paper, as I did here.

First, I stamped the image onto ultra smooth white cardstock. Next, I traced the hat bands, the hair and the collar onto designer paper and trimmed it out.  Then I  paper pieced the fussy cut bits onto the stamped image.  To finish the face, I placed the stencil over the image and used a blender tool to add Tattered Rose, Spun Sugar and Antique Linen Distress Inks to the face.  There is even a stencil for the lips, which made it very easy to add Candied Apple “lipstick” to this glamorous starlet!  Finally, I brushed the image with Distress Vintage Collage medium.

A Peek Inside

Graphic 45 Vintage Hollywood Four Fold Folio Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Frilly and Funkie Photo 3This dimensional folio is tied shut with lovely Antique Gold Silky Crush Ribbon.  It adds just the right touch of “glam” , shimmer and shine.  You can get a glimpse of the staggered pages from this shot, but let’s go ahead and take a look inside the album.

Four Fold Folio Tutorial Section One: Tiny Tags and Pockets

Graphic 45 Vintage Hollywood Four Fold Folio Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Frilly and Funkie Photo 4This one sheet wonder contains 3 sections.  In the first section, the pages measure 3″ x 5″.  I created little pockets and tags for this section.

Graphic 45 Vintage Hollywood Four Fold Folio Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Frilly and Funkie Photo 5 Inkssentials #5 Kraft Tags fit perfectly into these little pockets.  Each tag measures 2 3/8″ x 4 3/4″.  Dress the tags up with chipboard pieces, border strips and gorgeous vintage images.

Graphic 45 Vintage Hollywood Four Fold Folio Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Frilly and Funkie Photo 6  The patterned papers in this collection have a great Art Deco feel.  Use Tammy Tutterow’s Tabs One Die to mark off each section in the folio.

Graphic 45 Vintage Hollywood Four Fold Folio Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Frilly and Funkie Photo 7If you like to fussy cut…you will love this collection!

Graphic 45 Vintage Hollywood Four Fold Folio Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Frilly and Funkie Photo 8To make a custom charm like this one, simply add an image from the small postage stamps in the collection to the back of the frame.  Then tap the frame with Vintaj Patina paints and tie it onto the tag.

Four Fold Folio Tutorial Section Two: Waterfall Feature

Graphic 45 Vintage Hollywood Four Fold Folio Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Frilly and Funkie Photo 9Waterfall features are a great way to add an interactive element to a project.  I used Tammy Tutterow’s Waterfall One here.  First, I cut four bracket edged dies from black cardstock.  Then I cut four more from patterned paper.  Glue the patterned paper over the black base so that a tiny black border peeks out.

Graphic 45 Vintage Hollywood Four Fold Folio Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Frilly and Funkie Photo 10Belly Bands hold tiny images from the 8×8 paper collection.  Slip 3″ square photos behind the belly bands and journal on the backs of the small images.

Four Fold Folio Tutorial Section 3: A Spot for larger photos

Graphic 45 Vintage Hollywood Four Fold Folio Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Frilly and Funkie Photo 11The next section measures 3.25″ x 6.5″ and can hold larger photos.  Glue just the bottom edge of your images to the album base so that photos can be slipped behind.

Four Fold Folio Tutorial Section 4: Pockets and Inserts

Graphic 45 Vintage Hollywood Four Fold Folio Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Frilly and Funkie Photo 12The final section of the folio features two pockets with inserts.  The back page measures a full 5″ x 7″ and can hold full sized photos.
