Heartfelt Easter Dogwoods Greeting Card for the Alumni Hop

Hello, Friends!  Welcome to the Heartfelt Creations March 2018 Alumni Hop! Dogwoods have always been my favorite spring blossom. When we lived in Atlanta, there was a street in a small town called Clarkston that was lined on both sides with snowy white dogwood trees.   When those delicate trees blossomed at Easter, it was like going to a wedding.  I think of that street every year around this time. This Easter Dogwoods Greeting Card is inspired by that memory.

This 5″ x 7″ top fold card has a 1/2″ spine.  To make it, you will need the following:

Heartfelt Easter Dogwoods Greeting Card; Creating Layers

I decided I wanted a distressed, shabby chic feel for this card.  Once I had built my card base, I went about creating the layers.  First, I cut a 4.75″ x 6.75″ panel from the Flowering Dogwood Paper Collection.   Use an ink blending tool to add Distress inks along the edges of your paper.  Then spritz with water.

Next, I distressed all the edges with my Tonic Distressing Tool.  If you don’t have a distressing tool, you can run the blade of your scissors lightly along the edge of your paper, and get a similar result. Stitch this panel onto a double mat of white pearl cardstock and light grey cardstock.  I build my card front on this panel, and then once the card is finished, I glue it to the base.

Heartfelt Easter Dogwoods Greeting Card: Flowers and Sweetheart Border

Die cut the Sweetheart Border from Pearl White Cardstock.  I also used a Large Spellbinder Circle Die to cut out the focal from one of the 6×6 card panels in the collection.  Layer these elements up on your card.

Now it’s time to create those gorgeous dogwood blossoms!  First, I stamped 2 sets of the large blossoms and one set of the other blossoms onto pearly white cardstock using Sap Green Archival Ink.  Then I heat embossed the stamped images with WOW embossing powder.

Before you cut out the blossoms, go ahead and ink the centers and leaves with more of the Sap Green Ink using a sponge dauber.  Then sponge the edges with a combination of the pink Distress inks.  Spatter with a little water and some diluted brown ink to create the spatter effect.

Now you are ready to shape and assemble your blossoms.  Fill the centers with Tutu Pink Prills. Hot glue them to your card front as seen in the photo.  Die cut the ticket with Luggage and Tags Die.  Finally, add the bow and button to finish the card front.

Inside, you can add photos, journaling or small keepsakes.

Heartfelt Creations Alumni Hop: Pink Christmas Poinsettia Greeting Card Tutorial

Hello, Friends!   I hope you all enjoyed a happy and healthy Thanksgiving yesterday.  Now that you’ve packed all the turkey leftovers away, it’s the perfect time to hop along with the Heartfelt Creations Alumni team.  I’ve prepared a Pretty in Pink Christmas Poinsettia Greeting Card tutorial to share with you on this first stop of the hop.

Pink poinsettia are such a festive addition to the holiday season.  And yes, those are dogwoods, too!  I’ve combined papers, stamps and dies from the Flowering Dogwood and Sparkling Poinsettia Collections to make this Pretty in Pink Christmas Poinsettia Greeting Card.  Here’s how I did it.

Pink Christmas Poinsettia Greeting Card Tutorial: Building the Base
  • First, create a 5″ x 7″ side fold card base from deep pink cardstock.
  • Next, cut a 4.75″ x 6.75″ panel of the barn wood paper from the Flowering Dogwood Paper Collection.
  • Then, lightly distress the edges of the paper and ink with Victorian Velvet Distress Ink.  Spritz with water to create water spots.  Glue this panel to the card base.
  • Now, cut the pale pink dot paper from Flowering Dogwood to measure 5″ x 3″  Add a lacy edge with Border Essentials Die.  Glue in the center of the card.
  • Next, die cut the Eyelet Oval from a pearlized white linen cardstock.  I have had this in my stash forever, and honestly don’t remember where it came from.
  • Center the outer frame on the card and glue in place.
  • Now, add foam adhesive tabs to the back of the eyelet oval and place in the center of the frame.
  • If desired, use hot glue to attach a plastic glitter snowflake to the center of the oval. (From Dollar Tree).

  • Stamp the Sentiment from Sparkling Poinsettia Joy to the World on a square of the same pale pink patterned paper you used on the border.  Use Versamark Ink and heat emboss with superfine gold embossing powder.
  • Trim the sentiment into a square.  Crop the corners with a ticket stub punch.  Mat on pearlized white linen cardstock and pale pink cardstock.  Crop the corners of each layer.  Glue on top of the glitter snowflake.

  • Use Magenta Archival Ink to stamp two Large Sparkling Poinsettia onto pale pink dot paper from Flowering Dogwood.
  • Now, die cut with the corresponding Large Sparkling Poinsettia die.
  • Use sponge daubers to add Peeled Paint and Victorian Velvet Distress Ink to petals and leaves.
  • Then spritz lightly with water and shape with the Deluxe Flower Shaping Tool kit.
  • Now, stack the two layers together with hot glue, staggering the petals.
  • Next, fill the center of the poinsettia with Art Institute Dries Clear Adhesive.
  • Fill with a combination of Gilt Trip and TuTu Pink Prills.  Set aside to dry.
  • While the poinsettia is drying, create the dogwood flowers.
  • Use Magenta Archival Ink to stamp one set of Flowering Dogwood onto pearlized white paper.
  • Quickly sprinkle with clear embossing powder and heat set.
  • Then die cut with the corresponding Flowering Dogwood Die.
  • Sponge the centers with Peeled Paint Distress Ink.  Shape and stack.  Fill centers with Prills.  Set aside to dry.
  • Once everything is dry, spritz the poinsettia with Iridescent Gold Glimmer Mist.
  • Hot Glue flowers to card base.
  • Finally, tie a triple loop bow with white silky crush ribbon.  Add metallic gold string and button to finish the card front.

Dogwoods in Aqua and Green!

Aqua Flowering Dogwood Easter Card Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Heartfelt Creations Alumni Hop Photo 1

Oh,  how I love these soft spring colors and pretty spring blossoms!  The first step in creating this card was to make a 5″ x 7″ top fold card base from pearlized ivory cardstock.  You do have to paper piece in order to make a card this size, but I think the end result is worth the effort!

Aqua Flowering Dogwood Easter Card Tutorial: Get everything ready!

Aqua Flowering Dogwood Easter Card Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Heartfelt Creations Alumni Hop Photo 2

Before I assemble my cards, I like to get all my pieces ready.  Here are the steps you will follow to do this.

  1. Cut a rectangle from the pretty aqua dot pattern slightly smaller than your card base.  Then sponge the edges with Evergreen Bough Distress Ink.
  2.  Use the largest Spellbinder Circle Nestabilities die to cut the focal image from the 6×6 card front.  Lightly distress and ink the edges.
  3. Die cut the  largest Spellbinder “Diamondessence” circle from white cardstock.
  4. Use the Luggage and Tags Die to cut out the dove tag. Mat on white cardstock.
  5. Cut a 5″ x 4″ rectangle from the woodgrain blue paper in the collection.
  6. Add a fancy edge by die cutting with the Border Essentials Die.  Ink the edges
  7. Cut the “Easter Blessings” sentiment, add a fishtail end and mount on white cardstock.
Now It’s Time to Stamp, Die Cut and Shape Flowers

Aqua Flowering Dogwood Easter Card Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Heartfelt Creations Alumni Hop Photo 3

Here are the steps I followed to make my flowers:

  1. Use Colorbox Guacamole Chalk Ink to stamp 3 sets of the largest dogwood blossoms onto patterned paper from the collection.  I used the pale blue flourish pattern on the reverse of the 6×6 card fronts page.
  2. Heat emboss the stamped images using clear embossing powder.  If you look closely at my blossoms, you can see that I deliberately scorched the paper slightly with my heat gun to add a rusty hue to the paper.  This gives the flower a very realistic look.  But be careful…we want to scorch the paper, not set it on fire!
  3. Repeat this process with the medium set of dogwood blossoms and again with the leaves.
  4. Die cut all the stamped images and several stamens as well.
  5. Sponge the center and edges of each blossom with Evergreen Bough Distress Ink.
  6. Spray the blossoms with Dylusions White Linen ink spray.  If you squeeze the nozzle slowly, this will create ink spatters on the blossoms.
  7. Shape the flowers.
  8. Add the stamens to the flower centers.
  9. Add glue to the tips of the stamens, and dip into Mini Pearls Prills.
Time to Assemble!

Aqua Flowering Dogwood Easter Card Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Heartfelt Creations Alumni Hop Photo 4

Now it’s time to put all these lovely elements together.  Here’s how:

  1.  Glue the dot rectangle to the card base.
  2. Add foam dimensionals or waste chipboard to the reverse of the dove tag, and glue in position at the top of the card.
  3. Add foam dimensionals or waste chipboard to the back side of the border and position on the card. The top edge will cover the bottom 2/3’s of the dove tag.
  4.  Glue the die cut focal image on the front of the die cut doily.  Use foam dimensionals or waste chipboard on the back side of the doily and glue in place.
  5. Position your flowers and leaves around the left hand side of the card and glue in place.
  6. Add aqua seam binding ribbon and a burlap string bow.
  7. Use foam dimensionals or waste chipboard to the back of the sentiment and glue in place.
  8. Add one small dogwood blossom and small leaf to the sentiment tag.

Now we’ve  finished the front cover.

Finishing the inside of the card:

Use a scrap from the card front to create a border strip down the left hand side of the card.  Mat a journal card on white cardstock and add as shown along with a small tag and a sentiment ticket.

Aqua Flowering Dogwood Easter Card Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Heartfelt Creations Alumni Hop Photo 8

The inside of my card has a pocket that I’ve filled with a bookmark.   Glue a tag to the top of the pocket and use repositionable tape or Glue Dots to secure a chocolate treat to the tag.  Die cut a sentiment tag and glue above the candy. You can use border strips to add extra interest to your card’s interior design. Since I had extra dogwoods, I went ahead and added them to the top of my bookmark and tag.

Aqua Flowering Dogwood Easter Card Tutorial by Kathy Clement for Heartfelt Creations Alumni Hop Photo 9This dove image is on the front side of the blue paper I used to create my dogwood blossoms.  I just trimmed it down and cropped the corners with a punch.  Then I matted it on white cardstock, punched a hole and added ribbon.
