Stamperia Whispering Woods Pop Up Book Tutorial 6

Stamperia Whispering Woods Pop Up Book Tutorial 6:  The Cover Art!

Hello, Friends!  Our Stamperia Whispering Woods Pop Up Book Tutorial 6 is all about the cover art!  I’ve been anticipating and thinking this ever since we first began creating this book together.  And it was just as much fun as I had hoped it would be!  Naturally, I featured my favorite character from this autumn tale:  Mr. Froggy!

And I had my first play with ice resin and silicone molds, too. This is something I have wanted to try for quite some time.  I was a bit intimidated by the price of the molds and the price of the resin compound.  What if I messed it all up and wasted my investment? But at the end of the day, you don’t move forward in your art if you are unwilling to try new things and take a few risks.

So I went for it.  Thankfully, it was not as hard as I anticipated.  And while I did waste a little bit of the resin (when it begins to get warm, you gotta move, baby!) the whole experience from start to finish was really satisfying.  I especially enjoyed adding the paints and metallic waxes to the finish.

Creating the Background Panel

Like everything else in life, one must start with the basics.  In this instance, I had to create a wrapped chipboard base for my book.  This not only lent stability to the cover, but it provided simple layered backgrounds that supported the focal image.  I’ll show you how to do this in this week’s tutorial.

The Die Cut Wreath

How do you think about composition and design?  One of my favorite things to do is to add a circular (or oval) element to a square album cover.  There’s something about this shaker wreath element that feels like a window into a whimsical and delightful world.

The circle draws the eye into the center of the cover, where all the important action is going on.  It also provides a lovely landing pad for the resin leaves, mushrooms and Mr. Froggy’s morning walk.  If you’ve not thought about this before, try laying out a card front with and without a circular element.  It’s a fun little experiment.

What an epic project Kathy. Love those resin shapes, they look stunning. And yes I would really enjoy more series like videos. Even though this is a book, so many pages could be used card fronts or in smaller folios. I am looking forward to seeing your Christmas project delights too. We finally had some rain, time to prune in the garden and it has to be done early as the days are warm.

Just beautiful Kathy! For some reason I can’t seem to be able to comment on your YouTube channel. I loved watching you do this book and would love to see you do more like this. ❤️

I truly enjoyed this series of tutorials. You always teach me something new each time I watch your videos. I would love to see your process with the ice resin and moulds. I am like you I purchased several moulds but I have not done anything with them. I would love to see a video using some of the moulds you have purchased and the products you use. Thank you so much!
