Graphic 45 The Beach Is Calling Fun Fold Card Tutorial for Throwback Thursday

Hello, Friends!  Today I’m pulling one of my most popular card designs from the archives to make this Graphic 45 The Beach is Calling Fun Fold Card Tutorial.  When I was a designer for Graphic 45 (2016-2019) I created a fun fold card tutorial featuring By the Sea.  That video has had more than 42K views on YouTube, so I thought I would dig back into the vault and share the design again with a new beach collection.

Step-out cards have been around for a long time.  Usually they measure 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″.  But my preferred card size is 5″ x 7″.  So i had to pull out my pencil and paper and do some “mathing” to come up with the measurements for this 7 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ step out card base.  (The measurements can be found in the description box below the video on my YouTube channel.)

This size card gives us lots of “beach front property” to work with.  That means we can add lots of fun details to the design.

Beach Huts, Anyone?

I’m a pushover for a cute little beach hut!  So I’ve featured them on the front of this card.  The fun design I came up with allows the images to wrap around the front panel, so they function as a sort of pop-up element.  You’ll learn how I did this in the video tutorial below.

Make Your Own Embellishment

I also have a weakness for little glass bottles filled with sand.  So I transformed this die cut bottle with a layer of sand, real shells from the beach and cute little tag tied on with burlap string.  You will also learn how to do this in the video tutorial

Shell  in Your Pocket?

Pockets are my weakness.  I love adding them to almost every single thing I create.  So it should be no surprise to you that I found a few ways to add pockets to this fun fold card design.  How about some shells in a pocket?  Or a postage stamp?  But my favorite pocket is the one on the last panel of the card.

I’ll show you how to stack die cut elements to create a perfectly beachy pocket for this cute beach hut.  It’s so easy, but it really makes the card special.

Throwback Thursday Purebred Fun Fold Card Tutorial

Hello, Friends!  How do you feel about a Throwback Thursday Purebred Fun Fold Card Tutorial?  I hope you feel excited because that’s what this week’s episode is all about.

Our sweet Sophie Grace turns 12 today, and she loves dogs.  She loves all God’s creatures, truthfully.  But dogs hold a special place in her heart.  So I dug into the Closet of Goodness and Delight looking for a good pet themed paper collection.  (See, I changed the name from Closet of Shame. I’ve decided Closet of Goodness and Delight is a better name.  Authentique’s Purebred seemed like the perfect paper to help Sophie celebrate her big day.  How did she turn 12 already?  I’m in shock!

The Basics

The image on this 5 1/2″ square card is actually on a front flap.  I chose the image because the girl makes me think of Sophie.  Because the card is square, and the flaps are square-ish, I wanted to soften some of those edges.  So I used an oval die on the 3″ x 4″ card, and it worked like a charm. Here are a few helpful tips for making this card design sing.

  • First, back the focal image with 2 layers of dimensionals to make it stand out on the page.
  • Next, die cut the ATC Tag from the June Amazing Paper Grace Club Kit from pink cardstock.  It make a very pretty base for the image.
  • Now, curve the flowery branch on the left hand side of the card to frame the image.
The Details

Turn a sticker into a little banner sentiment.  First, mat it on a scrap of your pink cardstock.  Then back it with dimensionals.  Finish it up with bitty bows and buttons for the win.

Now mat another sticker tag on pink cardstock, punch a hole at the top and tie it into the flower spray.  A gingham bow and big ole’ pink button add to the vintage charm of the design.

A Peek Inside

The video tutorial will show you how to place magnets to hold the flap in place.  I’ve dressed up the fussy cut dog house with a cute puppy sticker.  The images in this collection are so gorgeous!

The side pocket is the perfect spot to tuck in a little gift card wallet.

Now you get to lift the flap and see the surprises hiding inside. I’ll show  you how to turn the image on top into a side pocket in the video tutorial below.

I can’t wait to give this darling card to Sophie.  She keeps every card I’ve ever made her, so she can add this one to her collection.

Please note:  Throwback Thursday projects are made with older collections and materials from my stash.  For this reason, I cannot always find an item online.  I’ll link whenever possible, but if a material is missing a link, it’s because I could not find it.  Thanks for understanding!
